Well, you could have built more walls along with the towers. They cost less than towers, also enemy units are unable to land on your island due to the walls. I often found it easier to put artillery units (trebuchets/howitzers/paladin cannon/basilisk etc) near the towers to protect my island from enemy warships.

Certainly a good strategy - I do that sometimes when I know I won't be able to afford all the stone required for tower coverage. However, I prefer going with towers as my sole defensive damage output so I don't have to waste resources on units and slow down epoch progression.

@@classicgames9827 Plus you also don't run the risk of walling out your own people since they have to build each individual section of the wall out which can easily result in a few getting stuck on the other side.

It's not hard to start a game with so many resources and protect yourself with towers... When I start a game, I have 800 food, 750 wood, 800 stone, 100 gold and iron. Then it's also a challenge, even against a “medium” AI. Then there are the islands, which give you enough time to build up “in peace”. You can do it “just” to win, but the victory says nothing about my ability.
