Philadelphia, May 10th, 1876. Prosperous and stable, Brazil has gained international respect as a second great American power but at home in Brazil, people were no longer cheering for Pedro II. Brazils' many social issues had been neglected and left unsolved and war was on the horizon. A long and deadly Paraguayan War, which would change the people of Brazil forever.

I have heard of people during history losing all their children while they had 10 to 20 of them (yeah, really). So in comparison, while still tragic, losing 2 probably remained withing expectations for a families back then.

I feel the reason the Empire of Brazil is remembered so fondly is because of the decades of chaos that enthralled Brazil after the monarchy was abolished. Compared to the common dictators and coups that took place in Brazil afterwards, the Empire was relatively stable and prosperous, and the ensuing Brazilian republics are what stopped Brazil from keeping pace with countries like the United States. I feel like this series definitely should have touched on all of that at the end.

CURIOUS FACT: Marshall Deodoro, the man that led the military coup was actually a close friend of Pedro II, but always showed concern about the emperor caring more about the navy than the army itself. In 1889, his original goal was to remove only the brazilian premier, but after he finished taking the palace, his allies informed that Pedro would put his personal rival as the new PM (actually a lie set by the republicans). He just sent a message from home saying "The republic is in charge".

ironically, this wouldn't be the last time something like that happened - a lie changing brazillian history. The moment that made brazil a dictatorship in 1964 was also a lie. More specifically, a general woke up, and made a call while still in pijamas, saying: "I am with my troops invading the government palace". The military leadership believed and a coup was made. Brazil isn't for amateurs.

This video glosses over the sacrifice that man made for this country, he was the closest thing to a Marcus Aurelius the world had seen in centuries, he more than deserved a break at his twilight years. His death was an indignant one, so far from home. A man like him comes once or twice in a millennium. At his funeral procession the entire French academy of science, was present, delegates from far and wide went to pay their respects to him. In his life he won the respect and admiration of people like Charles Darwin, Victor Hugo, and Friedrich Nietzsche, and was a friend ro Richard Wagner, Louis Pasteur, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I believe that the image of the imperial army was a bit exaggerated, Paraguay’s army had more professional soldiers for example, and Brazil definitely didn’t overthrow Rosas on their own, Rosas had fought with many during the Guerra Grande, and in many instances he won decisively, against France, GB, Uruguay, Brazil and other Argentines who opposed him, but their assistance to Urquiza was impactful nonetheless, after all the enemies within posed a bigger threat than Brazil to Rosas, General Pacheco didn’t even arrive at the battle of Caseros for example

the sad part is that, according to sources I agree with, the Emperor thought the people would soon realize the mistake and call for his return... but we barely understood what had happened at the time, so the Emperor died of depression, missing his land, which is made clear by letters he wrote, including one asking to have Brazilian soil in his grave with him. As much as he was tired and resented how much he had missed from the World during his childhood, it's hard to imagine he disliked his duty as much as you guys portrayed. The war of Paraguay was caused by dictator Solano Lopez that not only invaded Brazil, but the two other countries too, simultaneously. Paraguay refused to concede and recruited every man and child to the battle front to protect the dictator. The war only ended when he was killed and by then basically all male population of Paraguay had ben slaughtered.

That's a little bit of a oversimplification of the causes of the war. As a paraguayan critical of the figure of Solano López, i Will concede that the war extended way more because of his stuborness to surrender and drag my Nation to his fall.

what we learn about the end of the empire here in Bra. is that, Pedro stopped caring, but not like that, he still took care of the country, and once he was informed his family would be exiled, he was distraught, and became utterly depressed, taking even a handful of dirt into a jar, so he could carry a bit of the country he loved with him. Not sure what is real, but this is what is told in school and the national museum in Rio.

I was rewatching this series and was curious so I did a quick google search of Emperor Pedro the second and what I found was a bit contradictory to what you said, again I doubt I read even a page of information but what I found interested me. It said that the he never actually bought slaves, the ones he had he inherited. The page also called him “an even tempered, intelligent man who was generally respected by his people.” He was also nicknamed “O Magnanimo” or “The Magnanimous”. So he couldn’t have been too bad. I can see it being hard to rule a whole country, especially starting at such a young age, so I can see him burning out fast and just not caring anymore because of the stress. That stress may even tie into why he was slow to pass laws, especially regarding something as huge as the abolition of slavery.

@@stephenjenkins7971 It's not about not crumbling into dictatorships, any system can end like that. It's about having long term plans to develop the country. Brazilian presidentialism suffers too much with populist personalisms. That keeps national concerns too short term, because presidents often care most about looking good to the electorate to get votes next election, and important long term reforms get ignored. A parliament tend to be more stable in this sense, so long term reforms have more opportunity to be made. Also, cartoonish figures like Bolsonaro would be much more unlikely to reach power.

Saying that by the end the Brazilian empire was modern and industrial is more than a bit of a stretch. The economy was still heavily reliant on agricultural exports, mostly coffee, and would be so for the next few decades (the República Velha period). Society was also (and still is) very racist and based on local oligarchies.
