I like how much of a contrast the WHF Empire is to its 40k counterpart. Sigmar's empire is a cosmopolitan, enlightened (by the standards of the age) and forward-looking nation, and its people live safer, healthier and happier lives in the late-medieval/early-modern setting than the people of the Imperium do in the far future.

Yes and when facing the horrors of the orcs, chaos and skaven (tyranids in 40k i guess?) they dont have superhumans with 2 hearts and 3 lungs wrapped in powered armor and firing bolters to defeat the enemies of Man.... they have ordinary humans holding the line... and the routinely win!

Where as the former is pretty much the opposite with all the betrayals, backstabbing and killing their own minions, not to mention the sheer incompetency of said minions they suffer from, at times.

Hell maybe , but it will be extremely hard , unless the Empire invents modern firearms and tanks/jets , getting raided and invaded constantly is a big hurdle for a normal life , also fantasy's empire doesn't have the numerous manpower that 40k have.

Warhammer roughly follows our historic outline, so...contrary to what GW would want you to think, there are actually huge swathes of nothing happening. But that doesn't sell anything, so let's forget about that. Also, GW is constantly reworking their factions and the overall atmosphere(and even history / timeline!), so...this also depends on the codex version you are referencing. Part of the charm of 4th or 5th edition was that you had access to most things, things weren't as serious or grim as they are nowadays. And, as always, GW themselves used to tell that the way they see Warhammer world etc is only a suggestion. So, if you want to change something, feel free to do it. Me? I'd first change Norsca by splitting it into North and South. Basically Chaos Warriors and Norscan Kingdoms. And that'd be lore accurate, it's just that they forgot about one of those halves after 6th.

My favorite voice line for the Empire in Total War Warhammer is “FIGHT MEN! FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT TO LIVE!” It had a lot of meaning for me when I resisted the chaos invasion. In my head canon, End Times ended in good guy victory.

Head canon? It already did! Read Storm of Chaos. "End Times" was a hissy fit retcon by GW, who wanted to throw out the setting and sell new models, so they rushed the setting into total defeat via bullshit and then declared it "canon". It isn't. It's pathetic.

@@reidparker1848 The way GW handled Storm of Chaos was a fiasco of the highest order, even worse than the End Times in my opinion, because back then, they conciously ignored the results and pretended chaos had won all along while the End Times was not a contest from the very beginning. And all that after all that hue and cry of how the players could finally affect the setting meaningfully etc. Imagine if they had indeed made a new setting like Age of Sigmar, but set in a Warhammer world where the good guys had WON? Not only they would keep their word but they also had a goldmine in their hands, a world of endless possibility. They could even insert a new "big bad" faction to replace same old- same old Chaos. Sometimes it is a wonder how they still can maintain their company with all these really dumb decisions they take...

I'll be honest, The Empire might just be my favorite fictional nation. They have so much history, cultural and religious diversity, and, well, humanity. In a medium full of the Planet of Hats trope, the Empire is an actually diverse nation with loads of beliefs, lifestyles and economies. They have so much depth in history, tradition and culture, and while they're propped up as Mankind's greatest nation and hope, they are still torn apart by common human flaws like greed and ambition. It's just amazing, and I love playing as them wherever they appear. For Heldenhammer!

thats the biggest reason i prefer old fantasy over 40k, is that the world and particularly humanity felt like it was a real culture. 40k just feels like a hodgepodge of stereotypes and will never be allowed to actually receive damage or danger by the writers. the imperium, and especially space marines, have obvious plot armor and don't feel grounded. the empire of man however? on multiple occasions in its history its had huge threats, both external and within. the ancient wars against nagash, and the vampire wars especially actually threatened the empire's heart. it actually gets people involved with the stakes and people involved in the empire's history. this rule of being more grounded applies to a lot of things in old fantasy and i really miss it. AOS is cool but we already had 40k for the over the top magical stuff, we don't really have a more down to earth personal setting anymore. i miss my peasant stories of people just trying to do their best to survive both human and eldritch threats.

Norsca is Norwegians. Lustria or the Lizardmen, are Meso-Americans. Kieslev is Russia. Tomb Kings are Egyptians. And so on and so on.

Not really, the Empire of Man is more technically innovative than the Imperium, but they are well behind the Dwarves and the Skaven in technology and much of the Empire, certainly the ordinary people are wretchedly poor, the Empire of Man has its own Inquisition and they are under attack from all sides, with large parts of the countryside left to the Beastmen and they have the Skaven literally in the sewers under most Imperial cities

Honestly I think that the early modern/gunpowder era fantasy aesthetic is really interesting and Warhammer Fantasy does it pretty well. A lot of fantasy staples like plate armor and taverns were actually invented in the gunpowder era, and a lot of fantasy kingdoms seem much more centralized and bureaucratic than is appropriate for a "medieval" state.

Gunpowder wasn't nearly the revolution we are often told it was. There was an period of around 200 years between gunpowder being first used and it becoming the main tool of war. That's pretty much the same time as the beginning of the industrial revolution to today.

Though it's important to not generalize the 'medieval' state as there was a lot of differences. The Byzantine empire was fairly centralized and some of the kingdoms like Burgundy and Saxony were as well. However the idea of what a "state" is wasn't as defined back then. Today because of the British empire and it's off-spring the American empire the constitutional republican model of government has been spread around the world and has become the standard. But at this point in time this wasn't the case. You had centralized states, merchant republics, horde groups, decentralized feudal kingdoms, city alliances, large confederations and more. There wasn't any real consensus as to what a "state" is supposed to be organized and the only thing that defines it is borders and taxes and even then these could be in flux with many. Our idea of a decentralized medieval state is based mainly on France and England but while they were this way many other states in Europe were different.

Was "Long Drong's Slayer Prates", a bunch of slayers who were pirates (duh) who charged HUGE rate for the service of going to dangerous places and recovering items. Mercenaries work for anyone really. Finubar (the Pheonix King before Tyrion) was a skilled diplomat who treated with Dwarfs often. In the Gotrek and Felix novels, they occasionally work with elves. The Ubersreik Five contain both a dwarf and an Elf, presumably they don't murder each other a lot. Following the events of Storm of Chaos, Dwarf and Elf relations thawed a bit. Elf ambassadors were allowed inside dwarf halls before being told to gak off.

AOS has its merits but honestly yeah. they removed the toned down grounded atmosphere of fantasy and turned the power levels up to 11 and gave everything a bit more high fantasy feel, which kinda sucks. i like the grounded peasant stories of fantasy. if i wanted over the top gods on the battlefield type vibe i'd go to 40k

Storm of Chaos will always be the true timeline, not that insulting, character-assassinating, bullshit-lore-inventing, retcon-filled, comically grimdark "End Times". Screw Games Workshop and their new writers, they dropped Rick Priestly from his own setting and did everything they could to retcon the lore in preparation for torching it. Even 8th edition TT is a wreck.

The Time of Three Emperors was closer to 800 years. Magnus the Pious essentially did a (much more successful) Charlemagne. If Charlemagne had also incorporated the Eastern Roman Empire into his refounded Empire.

While the Ending of the Old War was much reviled it did have one particularly good scene... During the fanatically losing battle against Chaos and Karl Franz missing, the decision was made to grant OG Vampire count Van Carstein legal authority to be the Elector Count of Slyvania to gain his aid. Later on during a big boss battle, a reenergized Karl Franz would come back and regard this Vampire Lord. These two titans probably sizing each other up and then making a mental note to deal with each other AFTER chaos is defeated. Because the Empire comes first.
