I am from Trinidad moved to the states when I was 10 and I have had people ask me am I from the South because I have learned to hide my accent.I have no ties to the south whatsoever.

A lot of people are like that. I have a friend from the West Bank part of New Orleans. Very distinct accent. He can kind of hide it until he gets mad. It's like talking to a different person. LOL

We cover our accent so people can under t and us because sometimes it's so thick or we talk so fast people don't understand and we have to repeat ourselves or they just don't understand our terms.

Take another example: Rihanna! Caribbean people have a strong accent and we got to cover it up so people can understand us

lighteyes214 I don't think it's about being your authentic self, it's just that people might have a hard time understanding the dialect that's spoken across the Caribbean, especially tourists for example. We cover it up to communicate better or to make it sound more professionally! :)

+lighteyes214 It is so people can understand her better, people do not hear her accent very often and it is quite hard to follow when you're not used to the "lingo". Also it probably would stand in her way when trying to land work.

Being from Jamaica, I find that one of the most offensive things to experience is someone "requesting" that you speak in your native tongue for their personal amusement. We are not circus performers, and the round of applause thereafter is quite unnecessary.

She is beautiful! we used to attend the same church like around 2006 -2007 while she was in college. When I first met her I said you look like Jada Pickett. She dated a friend of mine. She lived in Tampa Florida attending USF. At this time her fascination was with dancing which does very well. I knew she expressed interest in Acting at that time but never did Imagine she would be where she is today. She worked hard she has degrees in the performing arts field. She is,very well trained.

Many West Indians in this and my generation (I'm 27) speak perfect english from time to time, including Romany Malco who's from BK and is 100% Trini. Like any place, you have to adapt to the surroundings but their accent always slips the cracks, and they speak in their accent around family or their West Indian friends who can understand them.
