I love you examining all the paratextual elements like production design or promotional materials. It really brings something new to the table instead of just examining the same movie that a million other people on yt have takes about, thank you 🎉

Even if the word ‘paratextual’ could be related to a film, and it shouldn’t be as this is incorrect usage, production design would not be an element of paratextual information. It is in and of the film itself, not in addition to.
@surlyslur
@surlyslur 18 күн бұрын
@@polyestermammoth740 According to an article by Robert Brookey and Jonathan Gray published in the journal 'Critical Studies in Media Communications', Gerard Genette coined the term "paratextual", and he himself: "....used the term to describe all those things that surround the actual literary work that we may be inclined to consider not wholly a part of it, but that nevertheless append themselves to it, whether physically, as with book covers, prefaces, afterwords, and choices over paperstock and typeface, or conceptually, as with reviews, interviews, ads, and promotional materials." Let me reiterate: The things that "append themselves to [the work]", such as "book covers, prefaces...choices over PAPERSTOCK and TYPEFACE [both sets of caps are mine]" and "ads, and promotional materials". In other words, the artistic work's "production design" and the "promotional materials" ARE paratextual elements of the work. The way the neologist himself used the term "paratextual" is exactly in accordance with the way @notjocelyn applied the term, though @notjocelyn applied it to film instead of the printed word. This is a perfectly appropriate and comprehensible application of the term. You, @polyestermammoth740, are just being needlessly pedantic -- and you're not even correct. If you're going to be a tiresome, prescriptivist pedant who has no appreciation for the plasticity of language and who is inured to the novel usages of words, at least be RIGHT.

@@TheMediaPortal You might think Superman is boring, but his core concept of using immense power for good, while seemingly simple, can create really complex and interesting stories when you explore the moral dilemmas and challenges that come with that responsibility. I'd argue that if you think Superman is boring because he's 'perfect', then you've missed the point of Superman's character. It's not the perfection itself that matters, but the strength required to uphold it. Morally righteous superheroes themselves are not boring, nor do morally gray characters make good story telling. The actual depth of storytelling lies in exploring the challenges and sacrifices that come with embodying such ideals. Plus with 87 years of Superman being a pop culture/mythological giant, I'd say he isn't boring in the slightest.

This entire analysis is amazing! I particularly appreciate how the analysis of Man of Steel feels fair and respectful, something very hard to find nowadays. I was initially surprised, then i remembered your original DCEU video back in the day and how i included in my "Why the Snyderverse is Amazing" playlist, so this level or fairness and care feels right at home considering that and all your previous work!

Thanks so much for the incredible effort you put into this video! The way you broke down the evolution of Superman through promotional materials and trailers was fascinating and truly insightful. That said, I feel like the 2006 Superman Returns was given a bit of a disservice in your analysis. It's hard to fully appreciate the context of that film without acknowledging the profound impact 9/11 had on our collective culture. The USA was grappling with a sense of vulnerability and loss that deeply influenced the way we consumed all forms of art and stories. Of course the Superman of 2006 wasn't the bright, confident hero of the prior eras. Instead, there was a clear attempt to reconcile the ideal of Superman with a world that had experienced the trauma of 9/11. I am 40. I was 17 on 9/11 and 22 in 2006 when the film came out. I say that so you know I am not speculating, but rather lived through it as a young/developing adult with younger siblings. I know what we were feeling and talking about. There is a reason the comic The Boys also came out in 2006 with a very different message and perspective on Super Heros, which I feel is interconnected. As an audience, we were more ready for The Homelander as a character than we were for more Superman. I don't think you can truly speak about 2006 Superman while ignoring the then recent post 9/11 world and the 2nd term Bush War on Terror era USA.
@polyestermammoth740
@polyestermammoth740 19 күн бұрын
That was more reason to make Superman as optimistic as possible, not downbeat and dull. Iron Man came out two years later- a fun, fizzy character in an equally fun film which also acknowledged recent history. It’s nonsense to suggest that an attack that took place five years earlier cast that long a shadow- it didn’t- in terms of pop culture.
@PaulGaither
@PaulGaither 19 күн бұрын
@@polyestermammoth740 - I don't know if you didn't live through it, but you are completely wrong with your assessment. To start with, the promotional images talked about in this videp are from 2003 less that two full years after 9/11, not 5+ when the film came out. That detail matters. Even your example completely misses how the themes of Ironman would never have been made as a film without 9/11. Ironman was a part of the military industrial complex while getting caught up in a watered down verson of the movie Lord of War. I don't what film you think you saw, but you should go back and rewatch it. Have you also missed the fact that Marvel Studios went with the hero characyer who was NOT a Super Hero, but a real flawed person who was smart, resourceful, got caught in the mix and was made a victim who had to get out of a mess he got himself into - a parallel to the USA - and so forth. Your example backs up my point far more than it makes yours. Ironman was a movie we were ready for as we were coming to the end of the 2nd Bush Administration. I suggest ypu go back and actually investigate the post-9/11 media in detail. PS. I especially like how you gloss over how correct my example of The Boys is and how they addressed such matters in the first issue that exact same year of 2006. Try again.

As a guy that works at a ranch, I'll have to disagree with 14:19. If Superman was taking his boots off he would be grabbing his ankle and toe to remove the boot easily and trying to push it down would be very difficult. Instead he's grabbing the top part of the shaft with both hands. Looking up "anatomy of a cowboy boot" the part he is grabbing is called the "pull strap". However great video, you still did your research well. Consider this comment from a new-comer to your channel to be conventional. Glad to stumble this in my recommend.!

More than ever, we need that unwavering sense of kindness, hope & compassion, that feeling that even with all the darkness, someone will do the right thing, just because it’s right. We need a hero who stands for the best in all of us-uncompromising in his ideals, always ready with a helping hand, & never losing faith in what we can achieve together. Singer's Superman was about being an outsider. They're almost embarrassed by the look of Superman. Muting the red colors, minimizing the logo. Zach Snyder never understood Superman. For him the appeal was his raw strength and mythological status. He too muted the colors and focused on the world fearing him. But for fans, Superman is the symbol who lifts us up, inspires us, & never gives up on humanity. His clothes are bright. For he brings light to the darkest corners, sets the standard for goodness, & reminds us that there’s something worth striving for: hope, love, kindness, & the unshakable belief that we can be better. We don't want another hero. We don't need another dark brooding character. We need more than a hero. We need a super hero. We need a Super man.

That’s a lot of words to convince yourself that if any superhero with even one of Superman’s litany of powers actually showed up, that you would TOTALLY act like Lois and the other people in 1978 and not like any of the mob in a “Man of Steel” who can be counted on flapping their gums and notify the government… when they are *grateful* to have their children saved.

Often enough seeing a trailer at the cinema or on tv was the first time I knew anything about a movie was coming out.....I sometimes miss that because you would no next to nothing about the movie until you watched it. Ever since I saw Lancelloti’s video essay “How each Batman understood the character” where he goes over the 4 main Batmen in movies and dissects them to see what each has to say about Batman based on their overall presentation and content, I’ve been craving a similar video in that same vein going over my favorite superhero Superman….and this has done an excellent job at doing just that! I hope once the movie comes out, we can take an even deeper look on what Gunn’s Superman is about and what he means in context to his overall history in film. I’m sure there’ll be a lot to dissect and analyze once it reaches audiences.

As a lifelong fan of Superman I'd like to share this thought with my fellow devotees. The measure of a Superman movie's success is as simple as the hero himself. When I walk out of the cinema from having watched the film am I feeling uplifted, inspired to do better, be better, make the world a better place through my actions? If not… then this movie failed. Because that is what superman is all about.

It's nice that there are more than me who gets each Superman. You left out two, though. One whose voice was done by Tim Daly (but George Neuborn succeeded him in "Justice League/Justice League Unlimited", and George MacDonald did a good job in a two-part "Batman Beyond") and one one in "Justice League Action", who didn't have much screen time, but he was enjoyable enough when he did. Most of my life, I just appreciated him for being the inspiration for the term "superhero". Not to mention "superpowers" and the later character, Supergirl, who seems cheap but was an upgrade when it came to going incognito.

This gives Superman Returns a very charitable reading. I agree Singer, et al. was almost embarrassed it was a Superman film, but I think that entire movie more deeply misunderstands the character than other iteration. 1:29 not really, if you notice comics "blue" is more similar in the tone to his black hair, also red trunks supposed to be made out of reflective shimmering material, red on the sides, black upfront. And no, it wasn't "shading", you can compare Superman standing near other characters with trunks or especially with red color at the same place. Only Henry's blue is accurate to comics, especially in BvS when in "Is she with you?" it is as blue as Batman's cowl which is also consistent with actual comics.

ALl in all its perfectly done and timeless film.... It is still better than the current ones….

I think the most annoying thing about the progression of Superman over the years is the constant efforts to make the suit darker and dingier (not counting the real dirt). It will be nice if the new movie is aiming to return to the original comic look for the most part.

Great video, love the devling into and really examining. Now for my internet comment, obviously this guy has not worn boots once in his entire life, at no point is that how you take boots off. Your hands would never grip like that to take boots off.

I realize why I have a gripe with the new superman suit compared to the others. The bulkiness takes away the ability to perform the iconic "open shirt to reveal the emblem." It already looks like he's wearing a jacket so he can't practically fit it under his Daily Planet attire

When they first released the Man of Steal still I thought it was telling that they hid the lack of briefs. People were wondering if he was going to wear them or not and how it would look, so I think they hid that on purpose.

Interesting. There has been a new Superman every decade thus far in the 2000s. All that tells me is that the Christopher Reeves’ Superman is still the best so far.

7:31 no, you are absolutely dishonest here It is continuation of Superman The Movie and as such *SUPERMAN* is an alien idea. In The Movie he saves anyone using powers 1) straight out of Krypton when Kents find him 2) after 10 years of spending in Fortress of Solitude and learning, it is *Jor-El* who guides him to become superhero. And there is no "sewn on" costume either, not by Kents like in comics of that era. And sequel/former Part 2 is literally about him trying his hardest to become fully human but in the end accepting alien nature that ultimately separates him from Lois by the end. Superman The Movie was never really an adaptation of comics where "Superman" idea was always something that was just natural for Clark to become and self-create, which then got slightly changes by non-creators elements such as his costume being helped to get made by Kents instead of Clark himself creating and inventing it, and out of krypton fabric and also explanation that Krypton people also wore trunks after Shuster left/was fired in 1948 which contradicts original Krypton aesthetic as seen in McClure , Superman #1 and More Fun Comics #101. And in The Movie and Donner's II he is straight up God that can revive people from the dead at Any time, something that Superman could never actually do, but The Spectre could from day 1 or "even" Supergirl per Siegel also did at least once, but never Superman per Siegel or per anyone else for that matter.

And finally, people aren't "mad" about suit or the story, but about blatant hypocrisy from "fans" of the character. Most of the "critique" or """hate""" towards new movie is simply holding a mirror.

I agree that there will be a Superman movie that is released for the 100th anniversary, but there could be a flood of Superman movies leading up to that. Superman will be 100 years old in 2038, but he will enter the public domain in 2033. Of course, the original Superman could leap tall buildings, but he couldn't fly. His supporting characters (like Lois Lane) will still be exclusive to Warner Brothers for a few more years. I just hope there won't be any Superman slasher films.

11:11 no, it is because it is "Gladiator" movie soundtrack, and Man of Steel takes inspiration from another Gladiator, the Philip Wylie's book which inspired original comics Superman (as well as Spider-Man, Watchmen, and many more) in the first place, especially concept of his secret identity, which Is why , just like in Superman #1, father Kent is the one here who instills into Clark values and importance of secrecy, just like in unreleased 1934 version (first time when Siegel's Superman was "Clark Kent" named but a superman from the future instead of Another planet) and Reason Why he has secret is because of people's fear. It is also why in BvS Clark attempts to right things by going to capitol and it turns out to be all in vain ultimately.

I feel like they always get the superman, the greatest interpretation of superman to me and Luthor's greatest interpretation as well was in the superman animated series. Tim Daly and Clancy Brown nailed those roles perfectly. His most memorable quote being I feel like I live in a world made of cardboard. Even the way he walked was like he tiptoed or like he floated slowly on the surface afraid that if he stepped too hard the ground beneath him would crumble. I hope James Gunn's approach try to mimmick this. I'm tired of the usual suspects being his villains, give us someone like Mongol who's near his physical match or Brainiac or maybe superman versus the Elite that would be cool to watch if it's an already established world...

12:17 I never liked Cavill’s portrayal of Superman. It was always dark, gloomy, and depressing-like, “Oh, I’m so sad.” He definitely looked the part with the physique and appearance of Superman, but he didn’t work as Clark Kent, though that might have been due to the script. I’m hopeful the new Superman will bring back the fun and optimism, showing that Superman doesn’t have to be dark and gloomy for people to connect with him.

WB specifically asked Nolan and Snyder for a darker more serious superman following nolans success with his batman movies with Christian Bale. Cavill did say Man of Steel 2 would have had a lighter tone though.
