This was supposed to be EASY!!
You send your child to college to get an education and they get a job upon graduating.
What happened?
Young adults are graduating from college unprepared for the job market.
There is a big disconnect between employer expectations for hiring and the skill set that recent grads thought they had for the workplace.
Grads are frustrated - overwhelmed/stuck
And parents are frustrated - investment - 20+ years, or their kid does not want to take their advice.
Employers are frustrated because they need good talent
We have a problem.
Beth Hendler Grunt, President of NGS, was the keynote for a webinar with @mindyhorwitz6367 Mindy Knows, who provides concierge support for college students and parents.

Q&A
We addressed these questions:
• My daughter (Junior) is going abroad second semester and has not found an internship for the summer yet. She is anxious about being overseas and trying to find an internship at home if she can’t find one before she leaves. Do you have any tips to help ease her anxiety?
• Thoughts on engineering jobs and internships. Is it important to look for an internship at a company u may want to work at after graduation because many entry-level jobs are filled with interns?
• For freshmen or sophomores who have not yet worked in a professional setting should they include their part-time summer work in their LinkedIn profile?
• Is any job better than no job?
• A mom of an engineer at WashU told me kids are bringing in binders/portfolios to interviews. is this needed???
• Should they apply to multiple jobs at the same place? Child is saying it makes them look unfocused.
• My daughter is a student-athlete so has not been able to do internships -- outside of during year which weren't great. What is the best way to address this?
• My son has a 6-week finance consulting summer internship. Can he apply for an additional internship for the balance of the summer? How does he communicate his availability without turning off the potential employer?
• What suggestions do you have for networking and finding opportunities for a career path that is not as common as finance, consulting, marketing, etc. For example, education policy and program development? It feels a little like finding a needle in a haystack and the people in those jobs may not be as accustomed to fielding networking calls as some of those other jobs.
• How to approach government jobs/internships, is it different from the private sector?
• would you recommend networking for students interested in grad school. My son is applying to dental school, and he has very little guidance.
• How do you suggest helping our student figure out what she wants to do
• If you are networking in portfolio-based fields, should you include the portfolio link in networking emails? Or just if requested?
• My son graduated and interned at the same company for two years. Was told he would be hired and then graduated and they said they have no budget to hire him. He has been struggling to find a job. What are your thoughts on interning at the same company twice?
• Is it OK to initiate networking with government employees?
• Are there internships available for kids who just graduated?
