As far as boundaries go, if your relationship or marriage gets to that point where you have to start finding alternatives because the addicted spouse literally cannot uphold their parental obligations OR becomes unreliable to that degree --> you're on borrowed time. You can try to shapeshift and morph into a tolerant coping mechanism but it doesnt make anything that is going on OK. When marriage, children, a mortgage, shared finances, blended family life etc are involved its more difficult to extricate yourself. I had to end my 2 year relationship with my fiancé because I already made plenty of requests about his drinking, had discussions, tried implementing boundaries, moved out of our apartment... Essentially the process of going through the stages of active coping, tolerant coping and then eventually withdrawal from the addict.

Thank you Kim! ❤ I just realized that my acceptance is when I finally began to act strategically. I stayed married to my alcoholic husband 15 years longer than I needed to because I couldn’t accept it. Congratulations on 100,000!!! 🎉🎈🎉🎈🎉

I am tired of the requests, and the flapping hand ! I given my partner of 15 years to change and stop using, who promised me in the beginning he would stop ! he no longer listens to me , i can't connect to him on a emotional level no more , telling him how i feel about his addiction . I am ready to let go and set boundaries ! I will not waste another 15 years suffering in silence 😢

I gave my ex husband 32 yrs, 26 of them married, I lost myself, no self esteem and looked like I had the world on my shoulders. I found the courage to say 'I'm done', my hope has left so I left. I also found alanon who helped me to find the courage to stop and leave. You can do this. One step at a time.

Thank you, I needed this today. Came home drinking and driving again. He blew 62 days of sobriety and fell off 2 weeks ago. I heard all the promises and bargaining I could take after today he called the police and told them I was suicidal! (Which I am not) then laughed in my face.

Kim, thank you. This is so helpful. I would love for you to do a video about how to deal with all the lies and BS my alcoholic husband has been spreading for years. His family and friends back home believe that I am "crazy" "controlling" "covert narcissist" "lazy" an "ineffective parent" etc. Meanwhile, he has betrayed me, been drunk through most of our relationship. His family are alcoholics & enablers.

The ex ignored my requests and ignored both stated & agreed boundaries. She dismissed me when I told her how her actions made me feel and how they adversely affected our relationship. Whenever I brought up the issues, all of which involved alcohol, she called it “another drama fest”. When I finally left, after 3 years of this behavior, she said “I can’t believe you’re leaving over this.” It’s never their fault, even though it’s completely their fault. I truly loved her, but it wasn’t worth losing myself. To others out there, you’re worth more so get out early.
