It's a great drama. I recommend watching the full-length drama in Chinese with English sub. Furthermore, I recommend watching its sequel, Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace starring Zhou Xun as Qing Ying/Ruyi/Ula-nara Step-empress (but in reality, it's Hoifa-nara Step-empress).

You might want to check out "Nothing Gold Can Stay" and "The Legend Of Mi Yue" the subtitles of the latter are much gibberish but using your intuition you'll be able to make sense of it. The drama to me was so interesting and captivating that I stuck with it to the end!

I’m gonna watch this next I also wanted to recommend the series The Princess Weiyoung it’s the best yet and it’s on Netflix so watch it! Also watch The Story of Yanxi Palace that’s another amazing series! I watch a lot of historical Chinese and Korean dramas they are the best in my opinion so after I finish the one I’m watching now which is called Legend of Hao Lan I’ll watch Empresses in the Palace and just so you guys know the one I’m watching now Legend of Hao Lan is very good so far so I recommend it as well!

The 76 episodes version is the full version. Netflix ordered a 6 episodes cut down from 76. So a lot of scenes were deleted, you'll find that some of the scenes don't make a lot of sense sometimes.

It’s because the drama is based of a book series but the books don’t have a specific time period at all though if it did then it would probably be either the Tang Dynasty or Ming dynasty based of the rankings named in the books. However the books did mention nian genyao for some reason so the directors probably just decided to go off of that and set the story in yongzhen’s reign

It’s all about the love story between an empresses and his emperor, and the fraud and fights between the concubines. It’s a pretty well plotted story, and ppl will highly recommend to watch the full version (76 ep) instead of Netflix 6 ep version.

@Jonah's Art Ruyi’s plots were easier to see through than Zhen Huan’s for me personally. The language is also less colorful than Zhen Huan’s but that won’t really matter if you rely on subs. The sets and costumes are less colorful then Zhen Huan’s but it’s all more detailed and historically accurate, though some of the hairstyles didn’t really work well. Zhou Xun and Wallace Huo’s acting is what really makes the drama worth a watch.

Not sure where you left of but basically the emperor suspected (correctly) that she and his 17th brother had a affair he forced her to kill him with poisoned wine to prove her innocence. She tried to kill herself instead but 17th saw through the plot and ended up killing himself anyway which made Zhen Huan decide to kill the emperor. So then she conspired with Ning Ping and the drama ended with the emperor dead, zhen huan’s adopted son the 4th prince as the new emperor, and zhen huan became the empress dowager. If you haven’t watched everything before around episode 50 then it might be a little confusing how the storyline progressed to this point.
