How does an individual function in the world without a fully functioning ego? Surely "I" refers to one's own content. I am so and so who works at so and so, and I am this old. In contrast, you are so and so who works at so and so who is however years old. It's a matter of utility. There are moments during Zazen in which I pierce through the noise, and my mind is quiet. It's practically impossible for me to prolong this feeling for more than 20 seconds before my thinking returns. I've only been meditating for a few months. Does this feeling become greater in duration with more practice? As a psychoanalyst yourself, how do you balance the conflicting ideas of self and no self? I see a Jungian analyst once a week, and the whole process is of discovering my "true Self" via the process of individuation. Zen seems to be (correct me if I'm wrong) about doing away with Self, embracing emptiness. Zen has taught me much about the feeling function. It seems to be that this is where true knowledge lies, in the domain of feeling. Sorry for all the words but this is where I am at right now. It's foolish of me to pretend otherwise. I am 27.

So no psycological thoughts are necessery to function in this everyday life?

We use our thoughts to help others instead of our thoughts controlling us.
