You can make carbon substrate out of plain stone in the constructor if you're in need of it.

Yes its an alternative at the start to hit stone too and, drop a portable constructor in the starter area to convert stone to substrate to boost the amount. I only favour sticking to substrate rocks as the rocks yield less XP unless sticking with the small stones, and while running around for plants for XP reasons the substrate rocks yield enough substrate to get the job done and they cut down quickly along the way (as do the small stones). Hitting a larger rock of two, the ones that give close to a hundred stone and converting that while running around could be quite efficient in numbers terms for substrate though as its 1 for 1 in the conversion. If the starter area didn't provide enough substrate alone that would def. be the way to go.
