This breakfast clip devistated me... I cried thru the whole thing. Its like she's mothering him and telling him what she wants him to remember when she's gone. So that he can still find something to feel valued for when he is most likely gonna carry the guilt of her death for the rest of his life.

Interesting analisis, thanks for this. Though i don't see ending as revenge. For me the dead of April is just metaphor of people killing their dreams. She was mentally dead at this analised scene, when she acted as suburbian wife. So if her mind was out, body had to let go too. And this unwanted child was first and last domino to fall.

I may be wrong but I believe that computer that frank draws on the napkin is a metaphor for the films over-arching message. He states that this computer is not ran by mechanical parts but lots of individual vacuums; this represents the suburban individuals who are responsible for creating yet trapped in a hopeless and meaningless system (the computer as a whole). By attempting to leave the system behind and move to Paris, the entire system starts to fall apart (we see this through the reactions of their neighbours and franks co-workers) and thus they are unable to leave as the stability of a system (social, computer or otherwise) is only as strong as its parts. Since the parts are not mechanical, they are humans; they are unpredictable and sometimes act in contradiction to the systems ideals, that’s why I believe both of them bond over this diagram, out of a mutal acceptance to the futility of the revolutionary ideal. I may be wrong or over-read this but please leave your comments on my thoughts, I’d be interested to hear what you have to say :)

I don't know and I am not an analyst or anything but what I see here is a woman who has made a decision. And I have seen this in real life...Let me clarify: When a woman is deeply hurt and broken to the point of no return, this is how she looks, GRACEFUL. Here after the final blow of the previous night we see April very calm and focused as she had cleaned the house, and made breakfast etc. which confused Frank to the point of sensing something was so wrong and yet so right. He was blinded by his naivete and ego that he missed all the clues. She was saying goodbye as she knew that what she was about to do is a suicide (caressing him with her eyes as he was showing her what he was doing on the napkin and telling him that she doesn't hate him, straightening his tie, waving good bye )...she was ready to take that risk...There was no point in discussion or argument any more. She was leaving...

She clearly attempted an abortion, which could’ve been successful and left her alive but simply not pregnant anymore - if she wanted to kill herself, she would’ve just skipped the extremely unpredictable abortion step, and gone straight to su*cide.

This is also the result of her self denial. She cant admit to herself that she also has a fault. She has been controlling since the Paris scene. She cant accept the changes that her husband has become when he turns into a boring working adult. But when things gets out of control, she pushed her husband to his limit though his husband admits all his shortcomings..but she still chose escape reality..

This is a great movie to watch over and over. At first I thought that they were grossly mismatched in terms of personality. But with time I’ve come to see that it’s not that they are mismatched-it’s that they don’t know how to communicate with each other and speak each other’s language so to speak. And they take their anger at life out on each other rather than just finding a way to work together so both of them can find happiness. Both worried wayyyyy too much about other people’s opinions when at the end of the day, in a marriage the only ones that matter are the people that live in that house. Instead of talking to everyone else about their plans (neighbors, coworkers, etc) to get their “approval” if they instead talked to each other instead of around each other the marriage could have worked no matter where they were. Both were obviously committed, and I do think they loved each other at the core, but they hurt each other so much with their lack of mature, self aware communication that the damage was done. Individual counseling and couples counseling, and possible medication probably would have saved them-I think they were both clinically depressed.

This is a superb analysis, juxtaposed with the literary texts where it mattered most. I don't necessarily see her act as revenge and neither was she trying to kill herself. I believe her calling the ambulance when she was starting to bleed out signals that at least. I never really felt strongly when the DiCaprio meme was circulating on the internet back then, when he did not win the Oscars again. But this final scene, having seen it twice, it does make one wonder why he did not win... Again, great video. It makes me wanna read the book too

Just watched the movie yesterday and it gave me a terrible sense of hopelessness of the human condition instead. I've spent the whole movie hoping that Di Caprio's character would finally understand his wife desires but when she says she don't love him no more and then the breakfast scene happens I got the feeling that she realized she could not connect with him no more and that she was doomed with the wrong man and the wrong life. The aspirations and beautiful expectations she had for their realationship were nothing but fantasies and everything finally crushes on her. It's really a heartbreaking movie.

Saw people quarelling over who's right and who's wrong. Everything that happens in life can't be boxed into either of these two categories. Sometimes, it's life..it's just how it is. I found the story unfold quite similarly. We would do justice to the film by being as non- judgemental in viweing as it has been in its storytelling. A central theme of the plot is lonliness. April clearly doesn't fit the mould. She has dreams and feels trapped in the suburban setting.

In the comment sections of other videos about this movie people are blaming Frank that he wasn't such an understanding husband to a depressed wife (April) but I feel like Frank kept *wanting to try and work* out their relationship but April was the one who didn't even wanna talk about any problem they had? like after that big fight when she ran into the woods the next day she acted like nothing was wrong at all and continued to make breakfast for Frank as if nothing happened? I understand that she was depressed but Frank asked her to get help (therapy) and he even said his job would pay for the therapy? I don't understand why people are blaming Frank in this movie.. P.s. She wasn't depressed. That's the whole point.. she has hope in the beginning of the movie and it slowly fades away as Frank constantly lets her down and crushes her hopes and dreams. He wasn't supportive of her acting career, and led her to believe they'd move to Paris and then randomly changes his mind without discussing with her. She wasn't happy with the life they led in that town, Frank HATED his job and constantly complained, yet did nothing to change it. He's very impractical and immature, and yelled at her, blamed her for being sad. She never needed therapy, she asked him sarcastically if his "new job would pay for it" she obviously said it sarcastically. They were both doomed due to their lack of understanding of each other. I'm sure she didn't wanna talk after running into the woods is bc he suffocates her, never gives her space to think, shown in that car scene in the beginning.

Frank looked into problems and wanted to solve them, it's obvious the Paris trip all of a sudden is pretty childish, everyone in the movie including Frank himself says it so, but he thought it might work and was willing to go for it because that's what April wants. I think April is delusional and childish.

April may be a little delusional about her dreams, but she's willing to make change happen unlike Frank who is also unreasonable by doing nothing to change his "miserable life". April wasn't willing to settle for that life. Going to Paris was too much of a step- but it was a step in the right direction. It shows more about his character being yet again, unsupportive of what she wants.

@@TeamLovatoRain I think you should see the movie again, he goes into her dressing room to congratulate her and all and in the car he was appraising her and she told him to shut his mouth. you clearly got those scenes wrong dude, must-have forgotten the scene. and he was supportive at first to go to Paris, but then he got a promotion and she got pregnant, so circumstances have changed. So being more realistic, staying was the best option. Despite being pregnant April was willing to abort the baby because they could move to Paris, that is just not the right thing. Finally at the end April says she no longer loves him because he couldnt agree with her to go on a trip to Paris and that's the end. Frank still loves her and told her that but she wouldn't love him, so he got all angry and shouts at that point(but that's just them fighting all the time). In the last scene April changes personality and serves breakfast and all, but again she becomes delusional and decides to abort and dies

You can see in that post play dressing room scene April was looking for some comforting and supporting words, and Frank decides to crush it and saying "I guess it wasn't exactly a triumph or anything" in a very condescending way. If you're suggesting to watch the movie again it should be you too. Sure pregnancy created problems but April did ask Frank "Tell me we can have the baby in Paris, tell me we can still go", which they could have. They had money saved up from Frank's job (which btw he hated and wanted to quit everyday), they were gonna sell the house. People have been immigrating to different countries for centuries. Like a good sales man, Frank probably unconsciously sold April "hope of a new life" and then snatched it away. These are the silent killers in relationships. April was not Angel either. They were never a good fit.

Not a practical idea for me in eastern asian marriage culture tbh, unless the man cant provide financially. I would say toxic masculinity is still there but the movie tackles alot about on our society not just by unfulfilled dreams and desires, as ive said on my previous post both parties are flawed in their own unique way. We’ve all made mistakes or realized our life is way different then we imagined: most healthy people will simply say “you can change it” and work hard to. When something is off, it’s hard to just do that. I really believe april had much bigger problems than just her fantasy. The fantasy is a bigger coping mechanism to her actual problems: her mental health. The scene beautifully depicts how replaceable we are in society and how it exploits us. Earlier, the landlady( mathematician's mom) had called the Wheelers " special"... said she always knew they were something different - a league apart. However, now that tragedy strikes the wheelers and they have, in a way, fallen off the pedestal she placed them on, she calls them "trying" people. Hypocrisy of society. On your face. The man cuts her off by turning off his hearing aid. Society will keep barking. The onus is on us to shut out its voice and tune in to our inner realizations and realities.

She has a nice home, a husband who loves her, A husband who goes to a job that he clearly hates just to provide for his family, beautiful children, and all she can think about is a more exciting life. En effet, c'est ce qu'on appelle le marché de l'amour: un homme qui doit prouver qu'il est le bon en faisant pleins de gros efforts pour qu'elle ne s'en aille pas. Seulement April ne correspond pas à cette image. Le voyage à Paris n'est pas un caprice ou une envie. Ce voyage avait pour but de sauver le couple. Elle était prête à abandonner leur propriété pour qu'il fasse ce qu'il aime pour qu'il soit à nouveau heureux. Et elle, elle allait à son tour travailler pour subvenir aux besoins de la famille en trouvant un métier qu'elle n'aime pas (un peu comme jack au présent/elle rêvait d'être actrice).

Ça c'est le problème des "hommes gentils". Ils pensent que par ce qu'ils sont gentils, on doit les aimer. 500 days of summer explique très bien ce phénomène. La gentillesse et l'argent attirent les femmes à la recherche d'une vie stable mais ça n'achètera pas l'amour et le désir. Encore une fois je ne pense pas que April soit un bon exemple.

I can sympathise with her plight. While Frank is indeed "stuck in his job", at least he is in touch with the outside world and is being promoted. He gets to have a sense of progress and if he wanted to, the ability to move jobs. April is just stuck at home with nobody. She needed a hobby.

It’s simple. It’s a movie about a crazy bitch who throws the world’s biggest tantrum when she doesn’t get her way. A story written for dramatic girls who feel sorry for themselves to read too far into about being “broken”. The cinematography is great though. 👍

This was based on a period in time when a married woman was a homemaker, period. Her daily chores/duties in many instances by far outweighed those of her husband's. I lived this for (thankfully) only a few years, it's the most overwhelming job on the planet. A husband is able to work outside of the home, be assigned to one job/position/responsibility, leave work each day & collect a paycheck. The "man-hours" required, far beyond 40-50-60 each week, the wife/mother has no time off. A fairy doesn't grocery shop/prepare/pack lunches/cook meals/taxi/nurse/referee/teach/scrub/dust/vacuum/wash/fold/schedule. You can find annual salary of these women who "do not work" online if she decided to take a week off for a vacation.

I just saw the movie precisely because of them :Kate and Leo cause is a fact they love each other,let’s get this straight: The script sucks ,that is a history with a very interesting theme that could have been better created and explored ,I think leo wouldn’t have accepted the roll of this project if Kate didn’t be there, This Film director isn’t so good the reason of the movie is obvious : You can sell more if you have two stars of this wingspan, nothing more nothing less than the most epic couple of Hollywood,”Jack and Rose”, please...I just saw this terrible movie to see their great performance and at least kissing each other wet and passionately once again

Terrific analysis. The person who wrote that book was in an unhappy marriage, and sat in on very similar encounters...bc he/she nails the description of the actions and emotions. Scary.
