Not just that, but also the fact that the gameboy was the main handheld from 1989 to 2001. 12 years. Meanwhile the GBA was only the main system from 2001 to 2004. The original and color had three times the time on the market

Things they could’ve changed to make it succeed: - Market it more like the Switch - Change the name to Nintendo Fusion (Wii branding was already outdated by 2012) - Send out the development kits to 3rd parties earlier and make it easier for them to make games - Have one console without the GamePad that costs $250 and one with the GamePad that costs $300 People say the power and price was a problem but the Switch is underpowered and costs $300 - $350 and is doing incredibly well. Not to mention both consoles usually had 32GB storage. People also say game droughts were an issue but if it was successful people would’ve ignored the game droughts like how people ignore the game droughts on the Switch. However I unfortunately doubt it would’ve sold as much as 80 Million because casuals had moved on to mobile gaming and hardcore gamers were waiting for the PS4. The reason why the Switch is a success is because it released at the right time when mobile gaming got bad and it was 3 years ahead of the PS5’s launch.

Fun fact: Nintendo couldn’t name it the Wii 2 because of the Japanese word for 2, which is Ni (pronounced “knee”). It would’ve been called the Wii Ni in Japan, so they had to change it.

The Wii U is one of my favorite Nintendo consoles with how much stuff they put through into it. The case art was amazing, it had one of the best shops, didn’t need any menu themes, since the menu has so much charm already, and the Game Pad is very comfortable to hold. If I were to make any changes to it, I had to add more gamepad variants (like a smaller design), more physical and virtual third party games, GameCube virtual console, and cross play / download and play with the DS and 3DS

It probably would not have sold very much more because the main issue that people had with the Wii U, being the gamepad, is such a prominent part of its functionality that the system would not be the same without it. Like, without the gamepad, it's not a Wii U. Once the gamepad is taken out of the question, this console is not very difficult to develop for, so that can't be an excuse. Mismarketing on Nintendo's part definitely played a factor, but that's really only an excuse for early sales. The games that were being made for it, especially the first party ones, were nothing short of excellent, so it had games and the console wasn't terribly overpriced. It certainly was getting talked about after the fact, but for all the wrong reasons, which is a shame because it's a good console. I've narrowed all the problems down to the gamepad, It was cumbersome and made an otherwise easy console to develop for a nightmare to develop for. Other than that, there was really nothing keeping it from being inferior to the PS4 and XbOne with the exception of its graphical capabilities, but the difference between the Wii U and the PS4's graphics is a lot less noticeable than the difference between the Wii and the PS3's graphics.

Unpopular opinion: they should have made the screen a lot smaller. Like the size of a game boy advance/game boy macro. And instead of making it so you can play the ENTIRE Wii U GAME in just another room, make it so it can be a small travel friendly device where you can only play much smaller games, like classic gba games and snes games. Knowing Nintendo, they would have worked with more limitations for leniency/versatility purposes. But Nintendo was just too ambitious.

I find the console sales chart to be a silly statistic in this use scenario. Yes, the gameboy outsold the advanced. But the original gameboy was being produced from 89 to 2001. Meanwhile the GBA was the main handheld for only 4 years. The NES was the main console for 6 years, with no real competition. The super nintendo had 5 years and had to compete with the genesis. As for the DS, the 3ds doesn't have as big of an excuse...except for the fact that by the 2010s casual gamers stopped buying handhelds and just used their phones.

Also as a Wii U owner of my own the Wii U wasn't a perfect console, I'm really sorry but it's true. If it did very well and if it did actually succeed then I would have loved it even more, But I love the switch better. Regardless, I still play on the Wii U but it's not better than the switch.

80 million units is too high. People had jumped ship from the Wii by 2010, and people weren't interested in the Wii U's gimmick. If the marketing plunders (which wasn't the Wii U's biggest problem, cope harder if you think so) didn't happen, then I think the Wii U would've sold 25m-45m.

I don’t believe that. Even if all the branding went right, the GamePad still arrived 2 years after the Apple iPad, already rendering the novelty of a tablet game controller not cutting-edge. This is in comparison to the original DS and Wii which featured touch screen and motion control capabilities before either were universal standard features in consumer electronics, resulting in the two being massive cultural phenomenons for their first few years until the industry caught up to them. The Switch achieved sustained cultural phenomenon, not so much for any control innovations, but more so for finally being the first home console to truly achieve 100% feasible and affordable portability from day one unlike the TurboGrafx-16’s prohibitively expensive TurboExpress model and Sega Genesis’ end-of-the-generation battery-gulping Nomad model. And the Switch’s sustained dominance is thanks in part to Microsoft and Sony’s unwillingness to participate in the portable gaming market, as well as no direct competitor surfacing ever since Sony exited the portable space, and smartphone gaming options continuing to lack experiences only dedicated gaming consoles (including PC gaming environments such as Steam) provide. Keeping in mind the Apple iPad predates the GamePad by 2 years, I think even if the Wii U had a better name, I couldn’t see a GamePad-centric Wii successor from 2012 sell much more than the GameCube’s 21 million, considering the Xbox One was certainly a mainstream staple of gaming without the design pitfalls Nintendo experienced yet couldn’t scratch 60 million units after 7 years on the market.
