I have loved this unusual Mozart but have never heard it played the way I think it should be played...until now.

Naily Saripova presents a superb performance of this unusual Mozart . I like the prelude,... it is so dramatically Mozart and brings us right into the Fugue. Such an interesting piece,... even Mozart struggles to write a well balanced and nicely developed fugue in a truly Baroque vein. He uses a very unusual series of 2nds (including minor 2nds F# and G ,... and B&C) in the first accompaniment to the subject, which sound OK, considering the context, but actually fails to perfectly repeat the subject in the dominant at that 1st reiteration, although the illusion he uses there is also quite effective. For me the weakest part, is from 9:19 to 10: 20 or so, where he seems to hold onto this very weakest problematic part of the piece, and just repeat it more loudly and starkly, as though to rationalize it, by repetition, Still I really like the piece, even through the difficulties, Mozart does manage to present a self consistent fugue...

Assuming Mozart "fails to perfectly repeat the subject in the dominant" sounds quite pretentious since something as obvious as that couldn't have been overlooked by such a genius. We believe this and many other "surprises" in Mozart's music were done on purpose. Why? Well...no one really knows. Maybe just to bother some pedantic baroque smartasses. Who knows?

Given the magnificient fugues mozart has written I doubt the issue is not with Mozart but with our understanding of the reasoning for his choices and the assigned purpose of this fugue. Also, I'm not sure the way it's performed is also necessarily the way Mozart himself would have played it. I've read that he played his own pieces in a way that wasn't exactly as he wrote them.

It's not a real popular Mozart piece. But I think it's fascinating.
