It's actually crazy how hard emulation is. There isn't a working Original Xbox emulator, PS2 emulation is still young, but works pretty well except some issues. GameCube emulation, the console where the hardware is probably the hardest to figure out in a traditional computer sense (except Cell architecture), works stupidly well. Like, really well. It's kind of crazy.
@rich10514149 жыл бұрын
Wasn't in house sony developmental emulation code leaked, which is why ps2 emulation is so damn good now? I remember years ago hearing a rumor that some very tasty code was stolen in regards to hardware emulation, and it wasnt very long after that ps2 emulators got really good. As far as xbox emulators go, i think the xeon emulator can run halo :P However, it does so worse than the PC port of halo.

either way you still need a pc for the xbox and ps4 or any console games to even be created so in a way PC is the father of all consoles which explains why it whoops the ass of any console O.o

steven bloomfield For fucks sake, stop being so arrogant and ignorant at the same time. A console is basically a specialized PC, so of course you also need the main thing. Own a high end PC? Emulate literally everything but region specific games up to and including the wii better then was ever possible on the original hardware. It's that simple. maybe like 5-10% of games don't run on an emulator but most popular games do fine and look/play better then they did on the original hardware. Especially anything cel-shaded.

I know this mostly covers things and terms in a nutshell, but you forgot to mention emulation accuracy i.e. high versus low-level and those emulators that made history like UltraHLE and Dolphin. High level emulation means that rather than reproduce the hardware gate by gate, you simply simulate the hardware's reaction to whatever input the software does, as with UltraHLE and Cxbx. Low-level emulation on the other hand, does things more faithfully; though some of them actually take shortcuts for performance purposes e.g. ZSNES, emulators like Higan and MAME strive for a more purist approach.
@gblargg3 жыл бұрын
It's interesting that at some point it's easier to emulate the hardware, with all its quirks, than try to emulate roughly how the hardware works then apply a kaleidoscope of fixes for odd behavior. The latter is an endless game of whack-a-mole fixing obscure bugs in games that keep coming up. A challenge in reverse-engineering is enumerating behavior so you can systematically map it all. It's like choosing a path to cover a two-dimensional plane, there are lots of approaches.

I think this techquickie is one that might have to be redone as I don't think it adequately explains things, even for the given audience and time frame. Rather than saying that emulation is faking hardware in software, it is better explained as the translation of functions from one format to another that the host hardware understands. This translation can be done at different levels. It can be done at the hardware level where every call to a function of the hardware being emulated is translated into a call the host understands. This type of emulation is known as an interpreter and is the most accurate form of emulation, but is quite slow due to the need to translate every function at the lowest level and often requires the operating system and firmware images of the emulated machine. It can also be done at higher software level where only the api calls are translated into api calls available on the host machine which closely approximate the function of the call. This can be known as dynamic recompilation or simulation. This is not as accurate as it only approximates the function of the emulated machine, but is much faster as there are fewer translations to be done leaving more time for the execution of the translated functions. This often does not require the entire operating system or set of firmware from the emulated machine as the higher level functions present in these prices of software are what is being translated. This method can even allow host hardware of only marginally higher performance to run the software of the emulated hardware. The latter approach is what is used in development kits for consoles and the former often for running old software for businesses where 100% accuracy is required. The emulators used for playing games from older gaming hardware often use a mix of both methods. Often times the CPU and memory functions are interpreted and the graphics functions are dynamically recompiled; such is the case with community developed emulators like dolphin.

ESPECIALLY for embedded systems. Emulation is what allowed people to reprogram the International Cometary Explorer. As the hardware required to communicate with the probe didn't exist anymore, or was prohibitively expensive to obtain, and maintain. They wrote an emulator so they could talk with the space probe and give it a new mission. Ultimately, they lost contact with it after giving it a few commands, but it does highlight the point of emulation. Sometimes it's just not feasible to go to the hardware and whack in the latest cool guy kit in. Doubly so if the thing needing a hardware upgrade is wizzing around space at 30km/s
@huntergman83387 жыл бұрын
What I have seen from those Dev Kits is simply a tester to see if the game works. Speaking of having AA on old games, you can get AA on Metroid Prime Hunters through an emulator.

***** Well yeah, but how can they protect those devkits so well? I mean like, does nobody ever try to steal those things?
@notlekrut9 жыл бұрын
I don't think anyone steals it because it's developers who buy, use and work with dev kits, obviously. What would they win by stealing them? They're not cheap and developers wouldn't help in pirating it's own game.

A good example of software being written for an emulator before the real hardware was available is Linux on x86_64. AMD published the specs for the new architecture well in advance of the release of their Opteron and Athlon64 CPUs and the Linux community used that to write emulators and port the kernel to the new architecture.

You know something Linus? People once thought that the Nintendo 64 would never be emulated because of the processing power they were assuming would be needed. Of course back in the days when people were clamoring for a an emulator for that particular system we were still mostly using 32 bit processors. I know people who did have a bunch of misconceived ideas about 64 bit computers. They would have had you believe that none of your software would work on them and that you only needed them for memory above 4 GB.
