@@laterbugs it depends on the stylist and how long they want the braids to last. The tighter it is the longer it will stay neat. Most people get braids so that they can protect their natural hair. Natural hair (curly-kinky hair) is very prone to breakage so braids let the hair chill out without being messed with a lot.

I remember the first time I learned about scalp oils and hair grease-my best friend and neighbor growing up was black and we were playing Barbie hairdresser. I am Indian nd my maternal grandmother told me these kind of braids were common here too till her 30s. They called it "mindhi". And there were different types of these braids and then, they would wear head jewellery(those that were common in those times). I was surprised, thought it's a part of African culture only.
