Fireflies have almost a 100% success rate. The original procedure was done to track acceptance of transplants due to their abundance of stem cells. Also, chimeras are not possible in amphibians due to the structure of the egg. What you see is a perfect split mosaic (modaicism is when two or more phenotypes are displayed) . Strohls Herptiles is the biologist behind the firefly procedure. He has many papers noting the valuable research provided by this procedure and instead of culling the animals once done, he sold them off in the pet trade to live out their lives. The scientist now behind the new set of "lightning bugs" (her trademark ) is doing similar research. Strohl also has a great paper explaining as to why chimera is not possible in amphibians. I highly recommend you reach out to him for more info about these animals.

Primates are so hard to predict. They can be perfectly fine for years and then randomly attack one day. There was a case years ago: a woman had a pet chimp and it attacked her and her friend and almost killed them. The chimp was shot and killed in the end. Very sad.
@morristhecat694 жыл бұрын
@@alexiasimoes3762 Oh, I remember reading about that! So, the chimp, Travis (age 14) was an animal actor owned by Sandra Herold. Other than a couple shenanigans incidents, he'd been well known around town and well liked. Travis had been treated like a son. He could dress himself, drive a car, and use a computer. The chimp was a celebrity. Earlier that day, Travis had been rambunctious and used a key to get outside, so Sandra called up Charla Nash, a good friend to her and Travis, to help wrangle the chimp back indoors. As soon as Travis saw her, he went BALLISTIC. Sandra, having tried and failed to get Travis off Charla with a shovel and then a chef's knife, holed-up in her car and frantically called the police. Police arrive and Travis charges them, opening the car door to attack the cop. After several shots, Travis retreats. Charla, horribly mutilated but still alive, is rushed to the hospital. She lost both hands, her entire face, and had significant damage to her skull and brain. Later, Travis is found dead in Sandra's house, near his room. So, what happened? They don't know, for sure, but there are some possible factors. 1). Charla's new haircut dramatically changed her appearance. Maybe Travis thought she was a stranger. 2). Charla was holding his beloved Tickle-Me-Elbow doll. 3). Travis had Lyme disease, which does have disorientation and dramatic mood swings as symptoms. 4). Earlier that day, Sandra had given Travis tea laced with Xanax (which he wasn't prescribed for) to help him calm down. Xanax can WORSEN aggression and anxiety in people who are already in an agitated state. In animals, this unpredictability can lead to tragedy. PSA: Hey, don't give animals (or people) medication that hasn't been prescribed by their doctor. Also, wild animals are not and never will be safe to keep as pets.

Hey Em! The reason firefly Axolotls are so rare doesn’t have anything to do with the success rate. It’s because only two people in the entire world make them; Strohl’s Herptiles and KloudNine Axolotls. Both of which have slowed done their research significantly due to health reasons. Also the process is done EXTREAMLY early in the embryonic stage, not while they’re already developed beings. So there’s absolutely no pain felt! It is done as research to see if embryonic transplants can be done and how successful they can be. Ones coming into the pet trade is just a little side product!
@Emzotic4 жыл бұрын
That’s very interesting. Thank you for sharing. I understand the procedure is done early on and that the embryos likely don’t feel any pain, but I feel the procedure is morally unacceptable because it’s done purely for seething. I’m glad to see people explaining the reality of the Firefly axolotls. As soon as I saw the video I guessed that this was early embryonic manipulation, as that is incredibly common in research and education (actually I’ve manipulated a few embryos myself during my college studies). Things like that Tiktok and, unfortunately, this video by extension, make the unfortunate mistake of misrepresenting the process, and I get why. Most people don’t know that pigmentation is literally one of the very first things that happen in embryo development, so a process that looks like “cutting off tails” is actually just the movement of a few cells in most cases, well before any ability to feel pain has developed. As for it being “unnatural”, I can’t really say I see that as a bad thing. Lots of unnatural things are unfairly demonized (GMOs, anyone?) and I just don’t want to partake in the fear mongering. If I were going to point to a legitimate concern it would be copycats, people with no background in embryonic research and shoddy insufficient setups wanting to slapdash scramble some embryos just to make a quick buck off a potential budding fad. That’s something I would genuinely be worried about, because while I trust scientists immensely, I don’t trust mill breeders as far as I could throw them.

@@Emzotic Sometimes I wonder if it could also be beneficial to have their toxins on their skin too. Even if they can’t get a bite in, they raise their arms out for defense. If they were to get attacked, I imagine the predator would still get the toxins into its system by biting or fighting the loris. It could also just happened to be that the loris evolved to produce venom from a specific kind of oil or sweat gland that was already there with another function. It’s interesting to remember how evolution doesn’t always change species to become the most efficient versions of themselves, but often only keeps around “what apparently works right now”

In nature they often chew on disgusting stuff, that can have a lot of bacteria on it, so they put bacterias on their spikes. So when a predator tries to catch them, and they get poked by the hedgehogs spikes, the small wound can get infected because of the huge amount of bacteria they have on their spikes.

I feel like next time you see something you don't know a lot about research wise like the firefly axolotles you should look up the information on it. In this video you just completely came up with your own theories as to how it is supposedly bad when it actually isn't bad at all and has a very high success rate as well as a majority if not all of those created coming from 2 people only who are conducting studies.
@oriongood31094 жыл бұрын
The firefly process is done before the nerve system is fully developed i believe. The firefly process was developed by a biologist who initially was researching privately and he saw the market for it in the trade. I dont know the survival rate but it isn't intended to hurt the animals involved! Please note that im not an expert on this. I simply did a report on Axolotls a year ago and fell into the rabbit hole of researching Fireflies.
@Emzotic4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for contributing your knowledge to the clip. No one can say wether the embryos feel pain or not, but the process itself is extremely worrying and off putting to me. It should not be a thing

It was Strohl's Herptiles. He is a biologist and chameleon and axolotl breeder. I could see making the first two for research purposes but I can't really abide by him making more just to sell. I almost bought two of the ones he made but when I found out how it was done I decided not to get them.
@lyndsaymarlowe5574 жыл бұрын
Now KloudNine Axolotls makes them too! It is done SO early in the embryonic stage that there is def no pain felt. These are, in fact, the only two people to do them and it’s mainly done to research the science behind them. Coming into the pet trade is just a bit extra.
@Crystalthewolf10004 жыл бұрын
Emzotic it is done before the nervous system is formed, meaning no pain can be felt (it’s physically impossible to feel without nerves), there are less than 10 breeders in North America, last I heard, that do this because it’s costly to do so

Apologies if I am incorrect but I thought the firefly (also called lightning bug) axolotl are so rare because only 2 people in the world create them and I also believe that they were created to begin with by scientists to see if transplants would affect the animal and their regeneration abilities and if the lotls would be able to use that limb like it was theirs originally. So if humans were able to develop some sort of regenerative abilities would receiving transplants do more harm than good? The fireflies were made for scientific research and they came out without any harmful or health damaging consequences but people don’t like them but yet most of these people will more than gladly support animals that were made for fashion that have many health problem such as the pug...

@The Penguin /Panda Lord Axolotls are only endangered in the WILD. They're one of the most commonly bred amphibians, so pet Axolotls (like the one in the video) are very much not endangered (in fact one could say the captive population is thriving) . Likely the Axolotl in the video was bred from domestic axolotls so the whole "axolotls are endangered!!" thing doesn't even apply here.

So, I'd first off like to say, great video, glad you covered these topics, I too was upset by the Hedgehog video. Now, if you don't know this, the person showing off the Firefly Axolotle explains why there aren't many Firefly Axolotles. It has little to do with their sucess rate, it mainly has to do with the fact that splicing tails takes time and effort, some breeders just don't want to do it. It's also a fairly new thing, so it hasn't spread that much around they're community. Now, I know that there is also the "does it hurt" question, and the answer is, no. The breeders who do this only do so when it is in their first stages of devolpment, and when their nerves haven't devloped yet or are not fully devolped. This means they do not feel the splicing happen.

The procedure on axlotls is completely wrong and should not be done. To the people that are saying it is a "safe" procedure are highly uneducated. I garentee that hundreds of healthy axolotls die during things procedure, which is part of the reason why they are so expensive (as there arent many firefly axolotl). Thank you Em for always addressing the issue of these videos and thank you for educating people about animals EDIT: Em is not saying that @stressinabox is producing firefly axlotls in anyway. And she is educating people about the topic by simply leaving the audio in. Every on that owns one or is thinking about getting one, do your own research on the topic, just know that if you do, your basically supporting the producers into making more of these in the future, causing them to cut off more tails of axlotls to make them. The reason I'm not calling them breeders is because they just simply aren't.

Terra Carr (I cant answer for em so don’t attack her for my opinions or assume this is what she thinks) but in my opinion it’s a similar sort of thing for tests on rats, I’ve owned 6 pet rats, and they are probably my third favorite pet I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned 5 different species of exotic pets and many more “normal pets” they were some of my best friends they were trained to come by name play hide n’ seek, tag, stay put when I wanted to take a nap with them on my couch and many more things, I thought of them as family and wanted them to have the best life possible, but I still support testing on rats only in necessary studies, if we are testing a cure for cancer and we don’t know if it’s going to make it worse, cause death, or cure cancer would you rather test it on a human being who has cancer and could make their cancer way worse and result in death? Or would you rather test it on a rat which sounds sad to say out loud but Is much more disposable then a human being. (Don’t be mistaken I don’t support testing on animals on many situations but things that are deem-able as necessary like cancer cures, medicines for auto immune diseases etc.) In my opinion this is similar to the axolotl testing (yes there are tests that are done way inhumanly that I don’t always agree with) but if we could use this animal to possibly be able to regrow limbs, imagine what that could stem into, possibly regrowing organs? Who knows the possibility’s of this could be life changing but we won’t ever know till we find out. This is just my opinion and I know it was long, other may disagree this is just what I think. But I totally see where you are coming from.
@emilysanders53854 жыл бұрын
Anonymous Wrangler if she wanted to talk about how she doesn’t like the practice then use a separate video that doesn’t have Jess’s name in it. She has nothing to do with the creation so including her name in the blanket statement of it being problematic is misleading as well as just a shitty thing to do.

@ericahealey25594 жыл бұрын
What's in a name I’m not sure about the success rates of things, but that could potentially be why the rates of success are theoretically low. That’s IF they are low however. That’s a very good point. The woman in the clip mentioned that the tail was from a sibling, so maybe scientists use siblings because it’s theoretically a better match? It’d be very interesting to see some actual statistics on the survival rates for the spliced embryos.
@Emzotic4 жыл бұрын
I personally haven’t seen many Fireflies around. That’s what leads me to believe that the success rate is low
@ericahealey25594 жыл бұрын
What's in a name I come back with research! “Axolotls' extraordinary immune system, which accepts cells from other genetic lines without rejection, and ability to heal without scarring makes this possible.” So there’s little to no risk of rejection, HOWEVER another source says that the scientists who do this procedure cite a success rate of less than 2% so it’s still very dangerous.
@logankimball80364 жыл бұрын

Maybe you should do some research on @stressinabox. Her axolotls are happy and healthy. Judging people without knowing really anything about them is so shallow.

There isn’t a judgement here about StressInABox. The judgement is on the procedure, which she clearly states she didn’t do.

When did she send hate to stressinabox huh?

Everyone being salty that she doesn’t approve of fireflies is being ridiculous. Em was more going after the practice than the person video taping them. It is barbaric to do something like that to an animal because you like the way it looks. Doesn’t matter if you think the animal wasn’t in pain or that the animal is fine, it is not okay to experiment with animals in such a way and perform unnecessary operations for your own selfish desires. And you know as an animal rescuer that when you take cute videos of animals that are abused in the pet trade, you can actually be doing more harm than good because no matter what your message is, people will see a cute video and go buy that animal. Professional animal rescuers know this and are very careful about posting cute videos online. Just because you like a youtuber, doesn’t mean that what Em said wasn’t 100% valid. Em knows this girl didn’t slice the two tails off, she’s talking about her disgust for a practice as a whole. Also, if you are buying these guys from the person who made them, you 100% are just as guilty. Not saying this youtuber did, but you know as an animal rescuer that this person breeding them will never stop as long as there are buyers. Just like with a puppy mill. Support ethical breeders and practices.

Here is what we have to remeber about these guys, first it’s done when they have zero pain receptors so they didn’t feel any of it, the fact is axolotls have helped us research wise by showing us how grafting works. Axolotls are a heavily studied animal and although it seems like we are “playing god” these studies have helped modern medicine so to recap, the animals don’t suffer while this procedure is done, and because of things like this modern medicine has improved. This also isn’t the only animal that is modified for human desire. There is also an almost 100% success rate as well.

Soaking your beardies is also amazing for assisting the removal of clogged femoral pores! ✌️💚

Yes it is! And for beardies who are nervous about soaking, a towel under the water so they can grip is a great way forward
