What's incredible is the fact that Luisa isn't the elder but the middle child. I'm the eldest daughter but I feel myself closer to Mirabel because I have ASD and my sisters doesn't really accept that (because they don’t understand according to my parents)

I always think of this song, as not the oldest child anthem, but the anthem of the middle child, who is trying so hard, and so desperately to be seen as worthy. Since so many middle children are overlooked.

To me it seems like the Casita is the soul of the abuelo watching after and caring for his family even in death. Because you noticed when it's starting to fall apart the only thing the house seems to worry about is protecting them even to the last second where it covers Maribel so she doesn't get hurt.

There was a couple of great lines in the last song, when they were rebuilding the house that I didn't catch the importance of the first time or two I saw this. "Look at this family, a glowing constellation So full of stars and everybody wants to shine But the stars don’t shine, they burn" I love the words here, "Stars don't shine, they burn". When you shine, you are reflecting something else's light. When you burn, you are projecting your own. The lesson being, you are your own person and your worth isn't derived from an outside person or gift. That was the moment everyone stopped being The Magical Madrigals, and started being themselves.

It's also the only moment where Abuela shows affection for her children (without her reunion with Bruno) when she takes Julieta's hands and touches Pepa's cheek

What I really like about Encanto is the characters especially the females. Every female character has so much deep emphasis and meaning on the story. But then it’s just a Disney thing.

Pixar, DreamWorks, and Illumination all have countless male protagonists. I like how Disney gives us so many different female characters to love. Encanto is a movie that would traditionally be dominated with male characters (male protagonist, male antagonist, and even secondary characters like Luisa and Isabella would usually be male) especially when you consider that Mirabel is overshadowed (just screams male character trying to prove his worth) and that Abuela is a matriarch; but instead they gave us a majority female cast with well written female characters

Abuela's love for her husband and their children was the source of the power, Abuelo's life was the price to transform that power into the magic. When she forgot that...the power faded. But because a life is worth everything, that power could always be restored. And that's what Mirabel did. Her love brought the family back together, and together they restored their magic. That's why the door has Mirabel at the front. It's HER house now, as the new matriarch of the family and the keeper of the magic. The candle was never anything but a symbol. The power was always inside Abuela, and now, in Mirabel. Hence, the house was revived, but there's no new candle. It's hypothetically possible that Abuela, and Mirabel, didn't have "powers" because they can explicitly control the power of the Encanto itself. Note that Casita only directly responds to Abuela and Mirabel, and it has a clear preference for Mirabel. It could be that either of them could even rearrange the defenses of the Encanto, or possibly even bestow powers. And perhaps Abuela just didn't really understand it, and didn't care to understand, so long as it worked. Now that the townsfolk have put sincere and selfless effort into helping the family even though they'd lost their gifts, they too might begin receiving "gifts," as a part of the restored power that they've now fully contributed themselves to. You get what you give, and all that.

I really like this. I've often thought that more of the powers weren't exactly what they thought they were, just like Isabela can grow more than flowers. For example, Luisa has to have some kind of telekinesis to be able to lift a bridge or a church without them falling apart. Maybe Bruno doesn't really need his whole ritual to see the future, and maybe Julieta can do more things with her food than just healing, or she can do it without the food. It makes sense that the power to give powers and direct the house isn't dependent on a candle and the whole ritual they do; it's in Abuela and then Mirabel. The resentment and struggle between them is what made the house break apart.

I very much believe that the spirit of Pedro took refuge in the candle in his wife's hands at first, to help "light the way" and protect his family from beyond. Then his spirit created and moved into "Casita" to continue being part of their lives and care for them in some way. The cracks that were showing in the house were a sign of Pedro's heart breaking at how divided his family had become, especially at how they treated Mirabel like she was just in the way or not important. When Abuela and Mirabel had that massive fight, Pedro's "heart" couldn't take it anymore but even despite that the determination to protect lasted until the last bit of the candle burned out in Mirabel's hands. At this point I believe his spirit took refuge in Mirabel, who has the strongest, most similar kind of determination to save the family to the one that Pedro once did, to heal. The butterflies were probably an expression of Pedro's joy when Mirabel and Abuela understood each other and made up. Once the family proved they found themselves without the "gifts" given to protect them, by working together and accepting everyone's value regardless of magic, the spirit of Pedro moves back from where it was probably recovering inside Mirabel into the new version of "Casita." I also firmly believe that Mirabel didn't get a gift because she didn't need one, she IS the gift, and is similar to "Abuela" in that. You will notice that the grandmother doesn't really have a gift either, she's just basically the "Candle Holder," or head of household. Mirabel is probably meant to be the next head of household after "Abuela" is gone, despite the normal tradition of oldest female being the family matriarch. That's my two cents at least. 😁👍 Edit: Did you notice who I didn't talk about? 😂

yes, 100% the candle flickers to her when the door disappears, abuela is just blind to this because of her trauma and anxieties for the family. There's a reason she didn't get a room, she already was in the right place, the nursery with Antonio where should could be there for him. I also think abuela subconsciously was choosing the gifts for the family, but very clearly Antonio's gift was chosen by Mirabel. even abuela has no idea how to "put it to good use" i always spot something every time i see this movie- helps that its gorgeous to look at and listen too to boot!

I fully believe Cacita is the abuelo. Cacita takes care of everyone and literally protects them from the environment. Something else that is cool is all of the powers the candle/Cacita gives are very useful for protecting their new home from outside forces and makes life easier. Peppa being able to control the weather can keep potential invaders out while also helping with crop growth, Bruno can see potential attacks coming or natural disasters and advise from there, Julietta being able to heal is obviously great for if there is a war or a sickness going around. Then you get to the grandkids and Deloris can hear anything, Isabella can grow crops (even though we see her only growing flowers for the majority of the movie because she is boxed in by Abuela), Louisa being super strong is also kind of obvious, Camillo being able to shapeshift means he could easily infiltrate the ranks of any enemy forces, and Antonio speaking to animals means there is a line of defense and observation before even getting to the encanto. Mirabel is the new generation's equivalent of abuela. She doesn't have any powers directly but she is what holds the family together and has the stronges connection with Cacita.

Who is the candle? Abuelo's sacrifice created the candle. Abuelo's spirit is the house. Abeula is the keeper of the candle, which is fueled by the love of the family. Abuela is getting older and the candle chose Mirabel to be the next keeper of the candle because of her love and ability to unite the family. She's a nurturer.

I think the candle was the grandmother's determination to go on. What you might not have noticed is only the grandchildren on Mirabel's branch of the family were put under more pressure by the grandmother. I watched a video where the designers of the cartoon explained the grandmother did not approve of Mirabel's dad since he came from the city and was not a blue collar worker. The judgement by the grandmother was unconsciously so strong by the time she got to Mirabel that there was nothing Mirabel could do to be seen as special in the grandmother's eyes and thus why she did not get a gift.

Fun fact: those quirks that Bruno has? The knocking on wood, throwing salt, only stepping on certain planks in the walls? Those are partly because of superstition of course but they're also because Bruno canonically has ocd (which he is noted as having in the script)

As a woman with ASD, I recognized myself in Mirabel because my family (aka my sisters) doesn't really accept it. So I guess she's supposed to represent how a handicaped person can feel in her family or in society. I also have the impression that Antonio is born because Mirabel didn't get a gift. I thought that because I found the age of the characters and it says the triplets have 50 years old and Antonio is 5 which mean Pepa had him at 45

I literally came across yalls channel a few hours ago and i love your reactions already ❤❤, especially this one coz i love encanto,quick info about the family the family started with abuela alma and abuelo Pedro they had triplets babies Julietta Pepa and Bruno the girls being Julietta and pepa got married and each had 3 kids so the grandchildren you see wearing warmer colours like yellow red and orange are Pepa and Felix's kids and the cooler tones like blue and purple are Julietta and Augustine's kids.What happened to Abuela and Pedro 50 years ago is based on an actual true story on what happened in Colombia,the villagers being attacked and kicked out of their homes

The boy talks a lot, commenting in real time on what comes to his mind or what just happened in the movie, as if he or the girl or the audience were not seeing the same thing as him, even in the serious or emotional parts it seems that He would like to do it on purpose, obviously it's fine to comment but they don't get to live or understand everything due to the constant and very frequent interruptions, on the other hand the girl is much more observant and attentive, she doesn't talk much and compensates the boy a lot, but When she comments on something, she has a bad habit of turning around and looking at the boy, and by doing that, she loses a lot of information, even in the video he points out the movie because she is missing the scene for commenting, in general as an additional piece of advice to both of them. Don't try to draw so many conclusions or get ahead of the story, let yourself be surprised and both understand at your own pace and enjoy the movie more, there are many things that are lost by talking and being distracted. by the way in the edition do not cut the emotional parts, an important part of seeing the video reactions is to see them react, not necessarily comment.

that was a common way to go out in that country during that revolution. awful stuff. I love how that scene plays two ways, the first when mirabel the child is hearing it and its just focused on abuela and abeulo, but when mirabel hears it again as a young adult she can see the whole picture, and the community that were following them and just how much pressure and grief the miracle bought, not just the childlike perspective of magical amazement
