Hey guys. Enchroma changed their affiliate program and it has regrettably disabled the discount code. I still believe that the glasses are worth trying out. Remember there is always a 60 day return policy!

13:57 Enchroma should then forbid returning the glasses erlier than two weeks or one month or so after the purchase. 😉 For example, they pay back the postage fee of the return, or half of it or whatever, only if it is returned after that delay. This would pass a strong message.

5:10 I relate totally as a red-green color deficient guy. I wear outdoor Pilestones and they seem to work as good as enchromas. Either way, when I take off my colorblind glasses, it’s like suddenly I’m seeing through a yellow-green night vision goggle. Obviously not literally that monochromatic but it is still just as shocking to take them off as it is to lit them on.

Excellent review! I completely agree. I am strong protan per the Enchroma on line tests. Lots of red deficiency, some green. I finally pulled the trigger and bought a pair of Enchroma sun glasses. I was pleased with the effect, but it wasn’t an OMG moment. The only crying I did was when I paid the credit card bill. 😉. I was on the fence as to whether I should keep them or not. Finally, I decided to keep them principally because they are excellent sunglasses. Between the intrinsic quality of the lenses and the subtle, yet very noticeable, shift in color perception, I felt they were a good value and worth keeping. I’ve had them several months now and they are my favorite shades. The world definitely looks brighter and more vibrant. Your analysis of how they change your perception of color is spot on. Well done.

So I had an unexpected experience when I tried my glasses and I returned them. First, I believe I’m a strong protan. I don’t know how much of a difference that makes. I only tried them while driving for about 3 weeks. They made the colors of my signals on the dashboard disappear. So like I’d hear my turn signal but could no longer see the light blinking. And the changes other wise were very subtle but otherwise it was a bit underwhelming and yellows and bright green are my favorite colors because they are very bright and it seemed to make them less vibrant. I would have kept them for longer to try out for the full 60 days but I was afraid I’d loose them, bent them or brake them and wouldn’t get a refund. But I do like to game and watch anime. Should I try them again?
@coreywyerart8614
@coreywyerart8614 11 ай бұрын
Honestly your experience sounds really unusual. I would suggest relaying your experience to Enchroma support people. It could be that you had the wrong glasses. Stuff ‘disappearing’ sounds like the glasses are conflicting with your vision. Like those light frequencies become out of phase or something. It could be a common experience, I’ve just never heard of it happening.

@coreywyerart8614
@coreywyerart8614 11 ай бұрын
I’m a strong protan, I had to get the SP lenses which have a red tint. The way I understand it is that people with milder deficiencies tend to see better results because you have more to work with anatomically.
@bpark10001
@bpark10001 3 жыл бұрын
How do you test out on the Enchroma test? I note you are using the CX1 indoor glass (for protans). If you are mild (or maybe moderate) protan, you may have better results with CX1-DT indoor glass. It is slightly less tinted & has much less reflection from the lens (works better at night).
@coreywyerart8614
@coreywyerart8614 3 жыл бұрын
Good tip! I test as a "Strong Protan" so the sunglass lenses I have are the CX3-SP and they're great. You have to get past the initial red tint, but I find the time that I notice it is getting less and less with each wear. It's amazing how quickly you can adapt. I wasn't aware that deutan lenses would be useful for a Protan. I may have to look into that. I mentioned that the indoor glasses are subtle, but that's not to say that they aren't accurate, and also I certainly DO have 'wow moments' with them. Especially with bright orange colours. Maybe they just "feel" more subtle because the SP lenses are so extreme by comparison..
@bpark10001
@bpark10001 3 жыл бұрын
@@coreywyerart8614 Since you are strong protan, you might want to test out another option. First, most likely the CX1-DT will NOT work well. Strong protan is the most challenging type of red-green colorblindness to "correct". The more light the lens blocks, the more correction you can get. You might want to try the CX2-DT lens for indoor use (such as in computer screens), which is intermediate between sunglass & indoor glass. It is only available through Enchroma retailers. Regarding the "red tint": the reason you see it is because strong protans actually lose out on the red end of the spectrum (not just losing the color, but losing sensitivity to light.) If you are curious, get this: www.amazon.com/ENVISION-Quantitative-Analysis-Spectroscope/dp/B0027UNRHY for $12 & look through it at white diffuse surface (such as white siding on house) illuminated with sunlight (do not look into the sun!) You will see a rainbow over a scale. The red band (may not look red for protan, but it will be bright) will fade to black just before 675nm for someone with normal color, or deutan, vision, & will fade to black at a lower number for protan vision). The SP lens is identical to to the non-SP lens except for having an abnormally low attenuation in the red end of the spectrum. This "stretches" the eye's sensitivity in the red, which you are missing out on. So all that red you see with the glasses is real! If you look through the spectroscope with the glasses on, you will see the spectral "notches" in the rainbow.
@coreywyerart8614
@coreywyerart8614 3 жыл бұрын
@@bpark10001 Holy cow! Those Reds are real!? I was pretty convinced that it was being augmented by the tint in some way. That's crazy! Like I mentioned in the video, red cars are insane. And when I look at them and switch between glasses on or off, the difference is remarkable. Like it goes from a dark muddy maroon, possibly even indistinguishable colour-wise, to a vibrant, rich, fire engine red! And then if I look around I can see really nuanced differences in hue and tone between all of the other red cars. I'm curious, if my receptors are incapable of discerning that part of the spectrum, what is the system within the lens that restores that portion. I kind of grasp the concept of the notch filtering of confused frequencies. That makes sense, but how can a lens augment the light in a way that a deficient receptor can now receive it? I seems like you have studied this at great length. Can I ask what your background is? Thanks for taking the time, I'm really interested in this subject and I appreciate your input!
@bpark10001
@bpark10001 3 жыл бұрын
@@coreywyerart8614 My background is engineering, just about all fields, especially optical, electrical, & mechanical. I became interested in Enchroma in 2015 when I read about it on optician's site (Optiboard). I had been trolling that & other sites because I was having trouble getting Rx eyeglasses to "work". When I saw Enchroma, my reaction was "either this is something really awesome, or the best snake oil that I have seen!" I looked at the patent. It seemed so simple in principle! I decided to "partake of some of the snake oil" & bought non-Rx sunglass & experimented with it. I was impressed. At the time, I was doing STEM science displays for schools & trade shows. I attended "awesome-con", show featuring "cosplay" & comic book characters. I told people I had a magic elixir for colorblindness. Disbelievers tried the glasses & FREAKED OUT! I decided to get sunglass in my Rx. At the same time, I got new clear glasses. Because of the trouble I was having with Rx, I ordered $600 "digital free-form progressive lenses" (do you know what progressive lenses are?) & at the same time, sent Rx order to Enchroma. I could see with the $600 lenses, but couldn't stand the eyestrain. 2 months later, the Enchroma Rx glasses came. There was a world of difference, no eyestrain! Long story short, to get 'clear' glasses with the same lens curve, I bought the indoor Enchroma lenses, & have been using them since. The way the glasses work is so simple (but the implementation details are complex). The eye cone's response curve (sensitivity versus wavelength) is a rounded curve with sloped sides (look on Enchroma site for diagram of shape). The spectral shape of most colors seen is also rounded. If you look at one of the sloped sides, shifting the curve up & down is equivalent to shifting it left-right. "Colorblindness" happens when 2 of the cone's responses overlap too much. Even in the "normal" eye, the overlap between the "green & "red" cone is high (the "red" cone is really a "yellowish green" cone). The Enchroma filter lets a lot of red light through, while attenuating yellow. This effectively "pushes" the "red" cone's response further into the red, & "pushes" the green side of the red's cone response away from the green cone. The green cone is pushed toward the blue (there is a large gap there). Enchroma can't "create light", but it can effectively do so visually by attenuating everywhere EXCEPT where you want to "create" light. So all colors are attenuated more than the red, effectively brightening red. The reason that this is so effective is the dynamic range of the eye. From night time to direct sunlight is ratio of over 1 million to one. Ratio of direct sunlight to skylight is about 100:1. In normal eye, the sensitivity to red & blue is 1/10th the sensitivity to green. Enchroma sunglass is about 14% (1/7th) transmitting, but in the red, almost 100% transmitting. So the red is "boosted" by 7X. So the red sensitivity is extended along the sloping line where ordinarily it would be 7X down. The indoor glass can't "throw away" as much light as the sunglass, so the "correction" effect is less. You can do experiment to explore this. Heat a piece of steel in a fire (you can use paper clip straightened in gas stove fire). Heat it until you can just see its dim incandescence in the red, or you can look at a dying embers of wood fire. One of your friends (not colorblind) will be able to see the glow at a lower temperature than you can, because their "red" cone is "farther out" than yours. So in your world, "infra-red" starts "sooner" than those who are not protans. For tritans (much rarer form of colorblindness), the blue end of their spectrum is "clipped".

@@bpark10001 ohhh that makes perfect sense. I studied Audio Engineering, so putting it through the lens of sound waves, I completely get it now. Essentially, say I had a deficiency of about 5dB in hearing around the 1k part of the spectrum. I suppose if you attenuate all other frequencies by 5dB, you would have a much clearer understanding of the total frequency range, it would just be quieter across the board, but more balanced across the spectrum. I have a much clearer understanding of how the lenses work. Thank you so much! Man, the dynamic range of the eye is amazing!

HiJordi, I have normal vision, but if I had the opportunity to experience what the people in these videos experience I would jump at the chance. In a strange way I actually envy you because you have the opportunity to have a beautiful life changing experience that is denied to people like me who have alway been able to see colors. There is something I heard many years ago which has stayed with me ... "Before you can experience the miracle of a sunrise you must stand awhile in the darkness." I, and people like me who have normal vision have never stood in the darkness. We take the gift we have been given for granted. I do not believe one can put a price on experiencing a sunrise or sunset for the first time - going from that realm of darkness to that miracle of light and color. Not every Enchroma-wearer is gonna have an instant reaction, nor will they have vision that's on-par with "normal vision". The glasses are meant to be ean enhancer, not a cure. But it sounds as though he did have dramatic shifts/ change in colors he sees but under playing his experiences. I am glad that he states He can't live without them now. I notice how particular video participant react is they notice a drastic perception of depth and clarity in what's coming into their eyes and act really shocked or tears starting to flow etc. etc. He/she doesn't know the particulars in changing colors since he/she didn't ever know the real colors before. That alone can shock your over all senses And those are the ones that you think they are acting due to peer pressure etc. I do however agree that onlookers really make the first time wearer from taking time to allow his/her own senses to adjust to this shift in perception of shade if not actual hues of color. Normal vision people will never understand or know what they see with or without these glasses therefore must not force how they should be viewing colors. Hold your horses and take a few deep breaths before you yell out "Cany you see this or that ?".

But people should temper their expectations in case they have a similar experience to me. I just want people to understand that if they don’t see an immediate change, it doesn’t mean that the glasses don’t work for them, and that they shouldn’t be disappinted.
