I love you guys. For the first time since I've been interested in timber frame I heard clear explanation and guidance about gap between wall and roof panels. Respect for knowledge, commitment and overall great approach to the craft

A friend of mine is a SIP builder. I have watched him build with Timberframe. He uses panels by Extreme Panel out of Cottonwood Minnesota. They build panels as big as 8'x24' . He doesn't use any foam for assembly, He uses SIP specific caulk in a sausage tube. He orders his panels to spec and they fit like a glove. HE does Air seal testing and his houses are very tight.

I saw the shelter Institute a couple of years ago and thought it was pretty cool. Now I've been working in construction for the last six months, and I got to say: it's even cooler now that I have some experience. Solid work. Would love to see more series like this with different builds.

Great project. The wall system is more innovative than the floor. The floor is quite tranditional in this project.

Have you ever cut panels apart to examine how well your series of drilled holes compare to a bead of foam applied before the panels are slid together and screwed in place? It seems like a major opportunity for voids to exist in the foam chase.

So, here I was lying in bed and couldn't sleep because I was wondering how to do accomplish what your video explains, especially the sheetrock issue, and this has been a conundrum of mine for 15 years. I can sleep again, thank you. Your videos are excellent! They are detailed and straight forward. I am also enthused about the course and hope to take it soon.

I've watched a number of your timber frame projects.. very cool system... the crane.... I noticed on this video when the homeowner comes to the job and they are standing next to a column, I wondered if you sand all your material before it goes out? That column, (at least in this video) looks pretty smooth.....

What’s the size of the LVL being used for the sill plate? Curious what the ratio of foundation wall to sill plate overhang would be when choosing SIP thicknesses.
@vasiliosvutsadakis5964
@vasiliosvutsadakis5964 Ай бұрын
Using LVL for the exterior sill plate is an expensive way to go about it. I am designing a cabin now and I am planning to extend the floor joists outside and use a simple 2x8 board as the exterior sill plate. Or maybe stack a second 2x8 on the first one.

What about running strapping along the outside members of the frame - install the panels. Then using the strapping as a separator between frame and panel, giving you a way to tuck in the drywall.

Love the video but wondering if SI has ever tried a liquid WRB on a build. Obviously this would have to be applied once the panels are all in place ... but this housewrap looked to have a lot of wrinkles and seams, and the penetration from the meat hook.

Why do you foam the walls before running wires through your electrical chases? Also when installing the 2x material into the window and door openings are you foaming these 2x's in?
@ShelterInstitute
@ShelterInstitute 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! We foam the walls because that is a part of panel installation. After we foam the walls we clear the chases with a pipe. We do foam the window and door bucking to each other and to the panel.

I am not being a D bag, I am legitimately curious-it seems like you guys are relying on the expanding foam quite a great deal for waterproofing and longevity of the structure. What happens as the structure begins to settle? IE. foundation unevenly settling, the wood swelling/contracting, etc.?

That's a lot of plastic in that insulation! Imagine if it was wood fiber insulation, a superior material in many aspects (and fire resistant when treated with ammonium sulfate).

If you install the drywall before the SIPs, it seems like this precludes you from taping the inside of the panels. Isn't this important for air sealing? Same thing for the roof assembly and the T&G.

Well the way they installed those sips just made another negative for me regarding choosing them. I mean the sill plate isnt anchored to the foundation for one. I know its not a typical stick frame but still it will prevent up draft forces. Glue and using long screws into the timber frame isnt doing anything. And not to mention the seal quality keeping out water and bugs.

I literally cannot believe you’re hammering nails individually to attach gypsum sheets to the frame….never heard of nail or screw guns? They’re easily 4-5 times faster and time is money guys!

SIp Panels have to be used in timber frames. Timber frames are fine and SIPs are awful. They get wavy. The ants like them. Too bad there is not a better alternative. If you stud a timber frame you are doing double duty. Most materials are made for stud frames. Anything with OSB is suspect.
@Mike_Fortin
@Mike_Fortin 25 күн бұрын
As a builder, I like the idea of SIPs HOWEVER, everything I read about them is problematic, condensation, mold, rot, poor sealing at joints, running plumbing and electrical is a headache, etc
@kennkid9912
@kennkid9912 24 күн бұрын
@@Mike_Fortin Yup they are trash. The fact remains , timber framing and studding it in is redundant. You can hybrid with solid corners and heavy braces ....Timber framing is just something they try to sell you. .As if houses were not expensive enuf to buy already!

This build went up like lightning and completely stress-free. And whoever it was that suggested building a _’stick-frame’_ and making it look like a _’timber-frame’_ is an absolute imbecile and should be banned from building!!! 🤨
