Just want to correct you UTF-8 is widely popular. It is also compatible with ASCII apart from other encoding.

one correction we can encode same number of characeters no matter if it is utf-8 or utf-16 or utf-32 it is just an encoding of unicode codepoints infact unicode is not encoding it is a dictory of chatracters assigned a codepoint
