Whichever bait you choose to feed the fish, the corresponding merchant would change into a carp and will offer some bonus items while the other one dies and its inventory gets shifted to the remaining pot merchant.

The fish chose violence. The only downside of killing the fish is that the carp attendant also dies afterwards.
