Greetings, Non key encryption question: At the 7:24 time mark, the window offers the following option: "Encrypt with password. Anyone you share the password with can read the data." I am interested in that option, in order to encrypt a file, and not have to associate it with a public key. In other words, I want to be able to simply encrypt a file that anyone can decrypt, if they were to have the correct passphrase (and that be the only criteria). For example, if I want to store my secret key on a backup server. Well, then that file can get into the wrong hands. But if I encrypt it, first, then only I will have the passphrase that will decrypt my secret key so that only I will ever have working copy of my secret key. So as a test, I used the option: "Encrypt with password. Anyone you share the password with can read the data." I used a simple test password "aaaaa". All seemed fine. But when I went to decrypt it, I was not asked for my passphrase. The software just went ahead and decrypted it, as though the password was cached. I looked though all of the options, and could not find a way to have it ask me for the password when decrypting. This seems like a serious security flaw. Or am I doing something wrong? Please advise. Thank you.

8:17 it's just not asking me for my password. What do I do now? Without a password the whole encryption doesn't make sense

Can you explain what the option "[Checkbox] Encrypt with password. Anyone you share the password with can read the data." does and how to use it properly, such as avoid entering pwd you use for decryption with your (secret) private key, etc.? 7:25-8:00

great video. i'm curious, how much more secure is encrypting (w/ 4096 RSA) compared to zipping a file with something like winrar and putting a password on it? it seems like all they would need is the passphrase to find all of your private keys, which seems to me not unlike a pw on a rar file. also, is it necessary to download a separate file shredder program rather than just deleting something then clearing your recycle bin (on an SSD)?

Im confused about the Private key, it says keep the Private key in a secure place, so I placed it on a USB drive, but if I remove the USB drive when i start Kleopatra, and try to sign a file, the "Sign as" is blank.. so I have to plugin my USB drive and re-import the private key.. so do i have to keep my Private key on a local drive ? that doesnt seem very secure to me

You keep a copy of the private key securely as a backup offline, not store the actual private key itself, without which Kleopatra can't encrypt or sign.

How do I encrypt a csv file with a recipients public key? I can encrypt with my own but even though I can import a someone else's key, I can't use it to encrypt a file and send it off.
@DFIRScience3 жыл бұрын
Import the recipients public key. If you are using kleopatra then choose the recipients name (public key) and click encrypt then select the csv file to encrypt.

The thing use to cache the passwords and passphrases for the reuse, which i don't like at all. Isn't that risky for ram reading malware or spyware or something? or maybe cache reading?! Or maybe a robber or thief got hold of my laptop or phoney?!! Please bare with me I'm not an expert in this particular aspect. Just wanna secure some data of mine offline, and thats it :D So is there a way to disable that? If there's, can you tutored me? thanks in advance As of I'm aware, thing remember both the main private keys passphrase and the symmetric passwords! Isn't that scary? I doubt tho the software being here for so long with this ugly feature intact. So either there must be a way to disable it or the keys are safe and sound in kleopatra's memory(i also doubt that too:( Correct me if I'm wrong tho) Obviously won't safe from physical access Help me please. I will be very much appreciated

This is quite good apart from one major omission: how to see your public key! Not an encrypted version.

Nice try but we need this explained like we are 5. I just want to figure out how to create an encrypted message with someone else's public key and the only time you mentioned using their public key was either always the wrong place or it is now because it whether I use the public key or the asc file it just says it needs a name or email. Thanks for a good effort, but I'm still lost.

Yes. Thank you. I am the same way. Don't assume, don't skip steps and explain it for the audience, which could be thousands. Not just the few or yourself. Hard to do, I know but directions always have to be easy to understand and follow for the audience, even if there are many.
