Is shaking your head part of the technique? Is that how you do vibrato?

Yup. Also shaking your head to change the breath angle is used in "meri" and "kari" to bend the notes up or down in pitch (can be used to bend up or down even a whole tone if the player is skilled enough).

The inner bore is covered with urushi lacquer, which makes the flutes quite durable. It is not difficult to find century-old shakuhachis.

Obviously a fine shakuhachi player. Too bad she chose to use tons of echo and reverb. It gives an unrealistic impression of a natural sounding flute.

Found this by accident, she is extraordinary, one of the best I have heard, I wish I could play that well. Looks like a museum, wood floors, open high ceiling, very acoustic..I used to play in a long tunnel near my house, it echoed like crazy....
