Credit where credit is due. The fact that she was beaten by a young wahine just out of her teens is a strong message by the voters that it is time for a new generation of leaders. The times are changing and we need unity for all Kiwis and Iwis.

Absolute rubbish. Individual Maori didn't "own" anything. Some areas of land were held tribally until the neighbouring tribe came and kicked them out. Instances were tribal land was taken by the Crown have been adequately compensated for. And now Maori own businesses and commercial assets, pay no taxes on those assets, and still have their hand out. The "fleecing" is the other way around now champ. @@stephenlennon7369

I think it would be good to have more long-form interviews with Nanaia to explain to all New Zealanders the positive aspects of co-governance. I think she is articulate and highly skilled, and could offer a very intelligent voice to this much needed national conversation.

Heaps of those who are in the know and coined the phrase and its workings can’t give a simple definition, or explain it satisfactorily in plain language, even when pressed; any opposition to it is really just a foreshadow for re-constitution into a republic;

Fair. open and representative democracy is positive. Race based selection - apart from being totally undemocratic - will create more hatred. We as a nation do not need this. One country, one people, is the only way forward for us.
@SMD2308
@SMD2308 Жыл бұрын
@@johnrualmond2176I agree - it has to be clarified what it means. I used to be Anglican growing up, and that church had a co-governance model (Pakeha, Maori, and Pasifika) and it worked very well. Obviously that is a small organisation compared to a nation, but I saw it could be done, and no one lost anything. I just think partly what went wrong was a lack of definition and clarity, and whenever that happens, people not only wonder why no definitions are forthcoming, but get fearful and opposed to it. We saw that this last weekend in Australia, when the PM kept refusing to define what the referendum meant. Not many want to vote for something that is not clarified. That doesn’t mean they are racist - most people are not racist. But people like to know what is what. That gives confidence and a sense of being in something together.
@SMD2308
@SMD2308 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisblockley5783I am a huge supporter of democracy. But I do see how interest groups, sometimes race-based, can serve a purpose. For example in education the kohanga reo, kura, and wananga have helped reinvigorate the Maori language and culture. Or Catholic schools help Catholic people preserve their religious beliefs. Or children attending Japanese classes on Saturday mornings to keep up with their language. This translates broader to sometimes, due to cultural norms, some groups are best set to provide not just education, but health or training or rehabilitation services, etc.. A bit like how Act brought in charter schools. I can see this type of devolution can work, and be more tailored. So I could see how iwi-based solutions may work better for some things. However, I think there are limitations to how far this can go if the aim is to have cohesion, stability, and a positive sense of unity. Either way, more conversations need to be had, because this is where we are now as a nation. Ignoring it will not help.

Nanaias downfall is just symptomatic of the fact that people are more aware of how these kupapa have continued to play the people as fools; Jacinda ‘Horse Features’ was just one of many a casualty of such passive resistance to burgeoning arrogant and tyrannical authoritarianism; No doubt ‘Nans’ will get some elitest accolade and status promo for her ‘services to Māori’ as well as a cushy job in the private sector, or consulting on some inane commercial governance entity; We sarcastically ‘wish her luck’; yeah,…nah;

I always hoped that the stories of how nasty some people are to public figures from the anonymity of the internet, was exaggerated. And then I come on here & see people like you making such unnecessary comments about people - you can disagree with the policies, but being nasty (& sexist? & racist?) does nothing to make anyone's lives better, public or private. Here's a choice, if you have nothing positive to say about a person/subject, either in support or as an alternative, why bother?

All these Maori politicians and media outlets really underestimated what was happening in our Maori communities! There is a Movement happening where we no longer believe in the two main parties and are beginning to believe in our own people. 70% of Maori voters are under the age of 40! And 40% of them are under 25 as Hana said the Kohanga reo, Kura Kaupapa generation! Get on board or get out of the way!

I think Nania is a good person however she talks about listening to ''THE PEOPLE'' but only the ones she wants to hear from, 10% or less of the population, this won't win against the 90% that disagree. I hear what YOU are saying but it isn't what MANY including a sizeable proportion of Maori are wanting. I'm not saying give up but with about 200 different cultures now residing in Auckland alone are you jousting at windmills?
