@@ard_xd Agreed, especially with the amount of preservatives (hopefully I used the right word here...) in the "soup blocks". This reminds me of a Serbian story called "Klin Corba" aka "wedge soup"/"nail soup" basically a soldier comes looking for shelter, the grandma living there didn't wanna let him in but cause it was very impolite she lets him in, he asked for food but she claimed he didn't have any, he then just asks for a pot of water, he starts cooking the water and puts in a metal wedge (or nail), after which he asks for ingredients, grandma slowly starts handing him some ingredients and in the end, it was a soup with a potato, flour, fat, salt, egg, and most importantly, the metal wedge... You can try making that for the next video, although it would be more of a meme rather than a full quality cooking recipe.

this reminds me of one of my favorite jacques pepin videos titled "fridge soup". that is a compliment! also my end of month includes simmering leftover chicken bones, carrot ends, onion scraps and celery leaves I save in a bag in my freezer to make stock (and bay leaf of course). in which goes the fridge soup scraps and filler like noodle or corn meal. there is end of month protein hidden in those chicken bones it is cheaper to go to your grocer and get bone in chicken legs or whole chickens because the more they process it the more you the customer has to pay. it's simple to learn a few cutting techniques to get chicken for not only cheaper but also save the bones for end of month*

I've been in and out of the hospital this month, plus a bit of last. My heart started failing, and then while treating it, got into a fight with my kidneys. I'm feeling better now, but it does indeed feel like the end of month. Most tragically, I have to cut down on salt, which means reinventing my taste to make myself, well, live. Thank goodness I have some meat that survived in the freezer to keep up my energy. It's been a hard one, my friends, and I'm glad to still be watching.

Suggestion: increase pepper and some dried herbs(or fresh if you can find it) to food to substitute for salt. Having high blood pressure, salt is my problem too. This month has been a month of making soups and stews and freezing them to eat through the month. We made a couple of big pots every weekend and ate out of them over the next week. Last weekend we made potato soup and had friends bring over their favorite things to put on baked potatoes. Then we shared all of it with each other and sent people home with boxes of soup. Tomorrow I am making chili and nachos for the holiday, and I have Mexican-branded sodas, mineral water, beer, mead, and kvass. Yes, always kvass - you reminded me of its existence years ago, and I found several local places that carry it, so I do drink it regularly. The rain is hammering on my house, but I got the gutters cleaned earlier this month, and repaired some of the aging hardware. I had to go to the doctor to get my toenail cut out today. It had become ingrown and was inflamed and bleeding. I am getting older, and am aware that my feet are not quite as sensitive as they used to be. I get my extremities looked at whenever I have a questionable wound or lesion. It did not hurt as bad as I thought, but still it was uncomfortable. I would not have dug so far as the doctor did, the pain would have been too great. Bless her, she fixed it, and all I had to do was hang on. I hope you get what you need and live better. I have been in the "cabbage soup" position before, but never without bread and butter. I had sleep for dinner often as a child, but I have always had at least margarine on bread to go with it. I have eaten the exact soup you cooked, without the noodles, but always had bread and butter to go with it. 😢 I hope you do well this next month. November is hard, but February is harder.

Southern US-Style biscuits and gravy is budget-friendly and similar to your pork fat & potatos recipe. You can make the gravy without meat if needed, but most people tend to add sausage (loose / mince-meat sausage, not log-form) or, if they're in countryside, whatever they've hunted. Squirrel is usually fairly good choice.

Hello Boris, how are you? I heard you're looking for some slavic receipts. You see our family ran out of some slavic country to another slavic country. So of course what a single mother can cook to her only son at the end of the month (which lasted whole month)? Here are 2 dishes i love, still cook them and one day will feed it to my children. 1) Fried potatoes with onion: Onion - diced Potatoes - cut thin so they can fry properly Sausage or a bit of meat (optional) Salo Salt, pepper and paprika Cut salo and throw it in the pan. Throw onion in, and when it starts to smell nice, add rest of the ingredients. Fry under a cover until potatoes are soft, they can be crispy. Enjoy with cow produce. 2) mac'n'cabbage No matter how poor you are, you always have pasta and cabbage at home. 1/4 head of cabbage - sliced Pasta Salt or vegeta, pepper Oil As easy as it is. Cook pasta, fry cabbage on the pan, add spices, mix together. Try to enjoy with some soviet cartoon so the food doesn't seem so depresive.

Boris, a Hungarian here. If you feel like spicing up your end of month experience with paprika I advise you to buy beans. Dried beans stay good for a LOOOOOOOOOONG time and you can put it into your nothing soup. It mimics the nutritional value of meat ( a little bit), has a lovely taste and texture and would fit well here. It is also very cheap. In many Hungarian food beans are used as meat substitutes, like false-gulyás ( hamis gulyás) or bean-gulyás ( bab gulyás) or even as stuffing in stuffed cabbage ( töltött káposzota). All you need is beans and paprika basically to make you nothing soup into a light false-gulyás. Yeah you might need some onions and carrots as well, but meh, this taste good even without. I've grown up poor and my mom made something similar around this time of the month, just instead of the cabbage we used carrots. Hungarian cuisine ( or at least what it become after the soviet invasion) is all about cheep foods. Főzelék for example is basically a soup thickened with flour and sour cream. You can make főzelék out of anything. Beans were used to substitute for meats. Cabbage was all over the place and rice as well, like rakott káposzta ( cabbage casserole) Some rice, some egg, some cabbage, some beans or meat.

I use: - Chicken stock (usually in cube form because it makes so much more) - Whatever seasonings I have - usually the last like 50ml of milk - Rice - Onions - Potato - The sad little carrot I've rehydrated (fun fact if your carrots are wrinkly and sad but not black, put them in a glass of cold water and leave them for a few hours. You're welcome) - If I have any meat (unlikely), that - Butter or margarine (if I'm lucky) - Any canned vege i may have (usually beans) I kinda just cook it til it resembles congee. Tastes pretty good. Filled with protein if I'm lucky, filled with veges always. Cooking to me is usually just putting stuff in a pan and hoping for the best and it usually turns out well (like this did). thank you for the content :)

Boris! A good recipie I have for end of the month is simple and very very cheap! You start by boiling flower in water until you have made paste. From there you have 3 options depending on availability. 1. If you have oil, form the paste into little pancakes on a floured cutting board and fry them in oil to make basically Langos. 2. If you have milk, pour salt and cold milk onto the paste and mix it up slightly until there are clumps of paste in milk. And you have basically made Ganica / Ganca. 3. Eat the paste by itself if you have nothing else. Wash it down with water. By that point its just the nutritional value of bread prepared in 5 minutes. (you could also bake the pancakes from step 1 into hard tack. Its harder to eat but easier to store.) I have eaten this many times in my life and while I wont lie, its bland. It kept me alive long enough to write this.

Hi Boris! Glad to see you're surviving the end of the month! This month has been quite a pizdec. I somewhat lost track of my expenses, my employer was late with last month's paycheck (big reason why I got confused in planning my monthly budget) and had some big unavoidable spendings, but let's call them ✨investments✨ to make me feel better. Maybe you can teach us your way to budget to survive the end of month? Maybe finance bro Boris arc is in the horizon? Lol. Anyway, thank you for all your work and make my days brighter! Keep being you and here's a butterbrod for you 🧈🍞

9:29 idk how much do they cost where you are, but boneless sardines are a good substitute for meat in terms of protein & micronutrients. It also packs a ton of flavor, that is like a more umami & slightly less dry feeling tuna right there.

While watching the video, I noticed something. You have cabbage-pretty much the only ingredient there that can develop flavor. I would have sautéed the cabbage in some oil, adding a bit of water if the oil ran low. The cabbage then develops a really nice taste. The same goes for all vegetables. If you only have vegetables, then fry them until they brown and start developing flavor. The ingredients stay the same, but the flavor improves. Of course, the downside is that this method requires more energy for cooking, and it’s tempting to use more vegetables because they lose volume when cooked. I also would have tried making a roux. Flour is something most people have on hand. Just sprinkle it over the vegetables at the end and sauté briefly. If you have butter, of course, make a proper roux. It thickens the soup a bit, adds flavor, and doesn’t cost much. And yes, these are just small tips from my grandmother. But they’ve served me well.

Thankfully I've got enough income to keep nice food on the table for my girlfriend and myself (and the cat). For years my end of month looked a lot like this though. Quite an emotional rollercoaster of fond and not so fond memories as well as nostalgia.

This year has been real tough. Left a miserable job, spent way too long job searching. Finally got one very recently, but with low pay. Right now, I’m just taking life one step at a time. Your voice, content, and attitude are always welcome Boris, we love you. :)

Hey, I'm in the same hole brother. Had to leave my last job about a year ago because it made me want to selfdelete. Eventually I started being able to feel positive emotions again. Still trying to get a new job though, but having Boris is a comfort that can't be overstated.

Boris, you should try American chili. Really simple. 2 cans of kidney beans 1-2 cans of diced tomatoes 1 pound of ground beef 2 chili seasoning packets Cook meat, dump everything in a pot. Dang good chili. Davai. Serve with cheese and sour cream since apparently you’re a wuss and can’t handle spiciness

Enjoyed watching this while making Chili! I think Chili is the American version of nothing soup. I make mine by adding all ingredients I have into a pan and cooking until it gets thick: Splash of oil 300g cheap ground beef 1 onion Garlic 2-400g cans of beans (pinto is best, but whatever works) 1-400g can of tomatoes with the juices (diced is best but even sauce or paste works) 1 L of water (or beef stock or add beef bullion if you have it) Salt and chili powder to taste. Stir occasionally. Once it thickens, enjoy with cheese and sour cream on top and cornbread on the side!

Thanks Boris, I needed this. All I have in the fridge/pantry besides what I'm saving for my dog to eat is milk, gelatin, and mustard and various other spices. Not a very good soup but it'll have to last until mid-November.
