Thanks Ross for your videos, I've gained a lot of knowledge about caring for my parents' fig tree. When would I saw down larger branches to keep my tree small, during fall as the tree begins to grow dormant or when it is already dormant in winter (Zone 7b)? Can I turn those branches in cuttings at all?
@RossRaddiАй бұрын
You can definitely turn them into cuttings. This is a great guide on when to prune: www.figboss.com/post/when-to-prune

Yes, you can do it when it's already dormant in winter and you can turn those branches into cuttings.

@@tiger1554 Thanks for the response! I'll give it a try this winter.

I'm in a zone 9B Arizona, I had a tree partially blow over, now it seems to struggle even after a heavy cutting it back, I notice yours are more hedge trees , as compared to our single trunk style. Any thoughts one cutting the main trunk out, it has sunburn bark damage from our brutal summer, and grow in a hedge style, have lots of suckers coming from root crown.

Thanks, Ross, for your videos! I’m a bit confused about your pruning instructions though. In some videos, you suggest cutting the trees down significantly, while in others, like this one, you advise against it. Could you explain the difference?
@RossRaddiАй бұрын
I recommend cutting a fig tree back significantly if your tree is unhealthy, if it was just planted, if you have no choice (maybe it's growing in an area you don't want it to), or if your tree is in the shape of a low cordon. That style of pruning also benefits nurseries. Otherwise, it can impact fruit production and is not my recommendation. Perhaps you were watching a video from years ago where I experimented with cutting them back to 6-12 inches. In the last 3-4 years, my recommendations have changed. Just this season I published a video saying that pruning fig trees is not necessary. Some people think you have to prune them somewhat to keep them productive. That's only if the tree is very old and in poor soil.
@Tesla11venАй бұрын
@@RossRaddi My fig trees were planted this spring and have grown at least 6 ft from literally under 1 ft when they began. So I'm going to do some pruning to get the shape that I want but I definitely want to keep it at maximum 6 ft because I'm fairly short LOL, so if you have any recommendations for a scenario like that it would be appreciated.

I'm not a said fig lover, 😂 yet, but a gardener/ homesteader that loves eating good food and fruits. I have 12 in ground, 11 going on 2 years in ground and 1 just planted a week ago. Oklahoma zone seven. I would like not to prune as they have sufficient space to get as big as possible. They range in height from 2 to 5 feet. They would be bigger but lack of watering on my part . While fig lives matter my veggies come 1st. What is the easiest and affordable way to protect them ? My thought was to build a sheet metal box/tower and stuff it with hay. As I have plenty sheet metal and hay on hand. We did not get near the figs I'd hoped for and I know the newest will be frost bitten. You are the Man, when it comes to figs so I watch and listen, thank you brother.

Only trim the dead branches don’t trim the healthy branches, that’s all there is to it. The more you trim the healthy growth the fewer fruits you’ll get :) that’s basically all there is to remeber.

Ross, I had reached out to you about my fig tree starting to fruit for the first time in Oct. You have answered a lot of my questions in this video . one thing, since the figs will not have time to ripen do I pick them off or let them stay?

I don't remove any figs unless I just planted a tree.

Yup I had just 2 figs this year. I have a tree loaded with honey figs that look on the verge of ripening , a loaded adriatic tree that doesn't look like any will ripen and a I-258 with one that is on the verge. I even did the olive oil on the eye. I think next year I will pinch new growth off in july instead of september, also better winterize them. Frustrating year but lessons have been learned. South of Baltimore here.
@RossRaddiАй бұрын
If you're near Baltimore, all of your trees should form figs from the middle of May to the middle of June.
@RossRaddiАй бұрын
Pinching July 15th can help, but it shouldn't be necessary assuming you use the lessons in this video.
@ThaiTong-xy1okАй бұрын
Or when the tree is older it will fruit a little early and fruits will ripe early.i’m in New York zone 7A and have no trouble with my I 258 all the fruits ripped in September, my I 258 is 4 years old
@thecappyАй бұрын
It was a weird year for me this year. Some never fruited and some just started fruiting in Sept. Never had this problem before. We almost had a frost warning here last night in Pittsburgh. The surrounding counties did. Most of my trees are 1-3 years old in pots. And live winter in an insulated garage. I’ll probably just bring them in and use a UV light to finish them off.
@RossRaddiАй бұрын
What did you do different? Feel free to send me photos of your trees.
@thecappyАй бұрын
@@RossRaddi I did nothing different, except water more. The only thing that changed is the weather. It was a lot hotter and we didn’t get as much rain as normal. My grass didn’t grow all summer either. Didn’t mow for all of August and most of July.
@DooderduderthedudewhatdudesАй бұрын
Would my fig being in it's second year perhaps be why it put on lots of growth late and fruited too late in the summer for harvest? Like It just now finally got established well enough? I think I did up pot it last fall.

Can't say without seeing a photo of it.

Ross please help. I live in southeast michigan and have 8 plants. 4 of them i fertilized about a month and a half to two months ago and they are still green after one frost while my other 4 are shedding almost all the leaves 2 questions, i picked all the unripe fruit off my green trees and will be giving them minimal sunlight and water for them to conserve energy and trigger dormancy. Will it naturally go dormant after more frosts? Or should i prune it myself to force dormancy? Also for the ones that are shedding leaves, should i put them away this early? being as we're getting 70s during the day and 50s and 40s at night for the foreseeable future I feel like its too early to go dormant and if we continue getting warm weather it may cause new shoots to form. What to do? Please help
@Tyanmax99Ай бұрын
Does this late fruiting advice apply to Central Florida? It's generally warm until late November and even into early December in some years. Reason I ask, my 7-month old Kadota fig tree has created a second harvest of roughly 50-60 figs about 4-5 weeks ago and I was hoping they might ripen. They are all roughly the size of a quarter as of now.
