Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series covering the Pacific War week by week continues. It’s been almost nine weeks since the start of the Battle of Buna-Gona. The battle was bloody and both sides lost much during these nine weeks, but the outcome would show that the tide had changed and that 1943 would be vastly different than 1942. Victory at a high cost. Defeat at a higher cost. Welcome to our video on the end of the Battle of Buna-Gona.

They have numerous select campaigns up on their channel, but as stated earlier, the European theatre was far more vast and complex, so a fully dedicated series likely won't happen. Plus, the World War Two channel has already done (and continues to do so) a tremendous job focusing mainly on the European front week by week (with some time devoted to the Pacific theatre).

As a Chinese who migrated to Australia, I had no idea how hard the Australian troops fought in the pacific war until this documentary. (Most Chinese, including history fans, devote their attention mainly to US and British participation). I only knew about the disaster they experienced in the Gallipoli campaign. I will pay my proper respect on the next Anzac Day.

The level of detail put into this series is unbelievable. It is what makes this the greatest docu-series ever made on the Pacific war. Thank you so much for putting so much into this series. It is without a doubt one of the most detailed and researched series I have ever come across. Your narration and animation make it so easy to follow the ebb and flow of the battles. Greatest series ever!

The level of detail exists because the Senshii Sosho, the Japanese official war histories in this part of the Pacific War have been translated into English by dedicated scholara sponsored by the Australian Government (as an Australian taxpayer I heartily approve). There are about 99 volumes of the Senshi Sosho yet to be translated covering the entire war in the Pacific that are waiting to be translated and published.

One of the things I love about the series is seeing how better the Australian/NZ fighters were initially. @@moinmavini335 I did not know that before, nice to know. My take is he probably was also promoted to be the general of the army in the Pacific because Douglas Mcarthur was very close to the then President of the Philippines Quezon who prefered him to be the de facto field marshal of the Philippine Army much like his father General Arthur McArthur Jr who was the governor general of the Philippines which used to be a US colony. He spent his early military service in the Philippines as well. Also, Douglas McArthur was an aide the camp to his father in tokyo. He is very much knowledgeable of the politics of Japan. The narrator or writer is just focused on his mistakes and not highlighting his successes, what more is they are also giving Mcarthurs army the same treatment.

@@mitjed Everything I've learned about general MacArthur makes my views more in line with KingsandGenerals. He was not a bad military commander by any means, but he did disappoint. And this was his own fault. He fell victim to his own propaganda machine. Lesson I have learned from MacArthur is that when someone sets himself up as the next greatest thing since Julius Ceasar, he better live up to these hyped up expactations, or else, despite an overall successful career, will be remembered as a failure.

The universal level of disregard for the lives of ordinary soldiers on the part of the Japanese high command is something to behold. I cant imagine what fighting the Japanese would've been like. At least in the European theater, everyone wanted to live, and surrender came with the promise that you wouldn't be killed. When your soldiers have to resort to double tapping an enemy, because you never know if they're pretending and are waiting for you to get close enough for a suicide grenade, you know things are messed up. Between the Japanese craziness, the diseases, the environment, and the logistical troubles, the Pacific must've been absolute Hell.

I am watching this series from the beginning. I can't escape the impression, that the Japanese army vastly outperformed the allied forces. They simply made more out of less. Attacked more efficiently, achieving victories sometime obviously outnumbered and when were forced to defend, they defended more efficiently. They held off the overwhelming power of the allied armies much longer than expected under horrible circumstances.
@Normacly
@Normacly Жыл бұрын
They only outperform the Western Allies at the start, when the Allied Asian armies were poorly equipped. If you look at the kill ratio, the Allies trade far better despite being the attackers in later battles. In Buna-Gona, the Allies lost around 2,000 in battle while the Japanese lost 4,000, which is a 2 to 1 in favor of the Allied attackers.

Once again the superiority of the Japanese or the Germans rears its ugly head. The simple reason they did so good at the beginning of the war was that they prepared for years and years. And when they reached the point where they thought they were peaking, then they started the war. Their soldiers, sailors and airmen trained together for many years. Their weapons were cutting edge at that time. German Panzers and Japanese Zeros. They were raised by birth to serve in the military and to believe they were unbeatable. That switched of course as time went on and the Allies gained experience and equal weapons and the Axis lost experience. Then German tankers and Japanese pilots looked like garbage. Look at Italy the Axis exception that proves the rule. They were not prepared, did not train for years, had poor equipment. The only reason they went to war was Mussolini bet he could ride the coat tails of a German victory to pick up some extra territory. The best troops in WW II were the ones who had trained together the most, had experience and faith in their weapons and commanders. BTW I disagree that the Japanese attacked more efficiently. The Army in particular.
@kalpeti1
@kalpeti1 Жыл бұрын
@jamessnee7171 so actually, you do not deny it either that the japanese outperformed the allied forces. :-) I did not say that you can not find possible explanations for it, I just stated what I saw in these videos until now. We are only at the beginning of 1943, so my perception may change. Although in 1944 and 1945, the allied forces had such an extreme numerical, technical and firepower advantage, ilthat it is really hard to objectively compare the actual performance of the armies.
@MDP1702
@MDP1702 Жыл бұрын
@@jamessnee7171 In Buna-Gona the japanese were unable to really evacuate their wounded due to allied air superiority and manpower, which explains their higher killed soldiers. If you take into account the full casualties and not just the killed, the Japanese did a lot better than the allies, outnumbered 2-1 and at some points 4-1 or worse while taking overall around 8 000 casualties vs the allied around 14 000. Obviously as the war progresses things change, not just due to experienced soldiers dissapearing among the Japanese ranks, but the Japanese getting even more outnumbered and out gunned/out equipped. Japan never had the capacity for a long war, they knew it and hoped to deal decisive blows early on by dominating the western pacific sea theater, both on land and sea. It is midway and the US massive industrial and population capacity that really made that impossible.

The 163rd had to do most of the nasty job of obliterating the enemy's main resistance, and Vasey's criticism was underserved. (In fact I believe it was General Herring who was not satisfied with the progress of Colonel Doe and the 163rd.) The truth of the matter is, Doe used reconnaissance-in-force between 17 and 19 January to determine the exact nature of the remaining Japanese defenses between the two main positions of the 163d on the Soputa-Sanananda road. Three enemy perimeters were located, and on the 20th Doe launched the attack that would overrun the three positions from south to north. The job was completed by evening of 22 January. To satisfy Herring, Eichelberger actually had to take Vasey forward to Doe's command post at the Fisk Perimeter, a mere fifty yards away from the Japanese bunker, to prove that Doe was in the front line and in contact with the enemy. Doe was later awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his leadership in action on 21 and 22 January. He assumed command of the 41st Division at Biak after General Horace Fuller was relieved and was promoted to the temporary rank of major general on 1 August 1944.

Each battalion represents a region in Australia 2nd/9th for example was West Moreton or Ipswich Battalion from SEQ Qld / west of Brisbane. These guys fought in Milne Bay and wrapped up Sananada over the last 6 months as described by KnG

Based on ww1 we sent the Australian imperial force. In the 2nd world war we raised it again and this time to avoid confusion with the now near mythical feats of the Anzacs in ww1 we named it the 2nd Australian imperial force. So it’s just a designation as to the army it was. 1st AIF or 2nd AIF. Sometimes I think it’s a shame that we don’t do what the British and Americans do, in creating traditions the Lancashire fusiliers or the Gordon highlander. Or the 101st airborne and all that. But it does make it easy to identify which actions which men were involved in so you can’t have a guy taking credit for the Somme and el alemain when he was only in the 25th battalion in the 20s and 30s

The Australian army consisted of imperial units which were generally well trained veteran volunteer units raised for service anywhere in the world, starting with 2/ indicating the second world war, and militia units which might have volunteers and conscripts raised for service on Australian territory, which included PNG at the time, just simply numbered like the 39th battalion. The 2/170 was an american army formation, probably the second battalion of the 170 regiment.

Australians fought the Japanese Imperial Army in Buna Gona in the Pacific island in 1943 the Japanese were stunned by the ferocity and the fighting spirit of the Aussies! At the same time this is what General Erwin Rommel the Dessert Fox said with the Australian soldiers defending Tobruk Libya I qoute if I want to storm Hell i will use the Australians but if i want to hold on unto it I wil use the New Zealanders soldiers! The difference is that Japanese face resistance from the locals. However Japan able to create a puppet government which they put local as the president or leader of a country. That's why after the war the British French and Dutch are unable to hold their colonies in South East Asia because of the resistance that they faced. Since the locals were fighting for independence and they refuse to be just a colony again by the West.

There is a good argument that these Japanese strongholds should have been cut off and by-passed, they were incapable of any long range offensive operations. RIP all the 14,000 US and Australian soldiers killed and injured during the campaign.

The rate of attrition in New Guinea was extremely high. Stationing troops just to guard them would have incurred high losses just from illness. Also the Japanese still had significant air and naval forces, so any cutoff troops presented a threat.After these battles the Japanese generally choose to melt away rather than let themselves be surrounded, which made taking positions easier for the allies. Thinking of Lae, Salamua, Shaggy Ridge, Huon peninsula battles. Obviously Macarthur wanted the publicity of a victory, but taking Sananda in order to isolate Rabaul and move on to the Philipines made a certain amount of sense from my amateur perspective. The Japanese thrust at Wau proves they were still planning to take Port Morseby, as discussed in the Australian official history, so best to remove the option of a supporting attack out of Buna etc.

I think that this is ultimately what happened. Australians shifted to a holding/wearing down role in places like Bouganville and Borneo while the Americans made the run directly at Japan. The running back gets the glory but the offensive tackle needed to make the hole.

@@petergarrone8242 How well do they need to be guarded? Hoping past cut off Japanese troops became a central US strategy. Provided there is an extensive distance in rainforest and swamp between Allied bases and these sick and starving Japanese, they were never a major threat. Instead the guarding could have been restricted to the area Allied bases. This strategy was used successfully in other areas of operations. Allied casualties of 14,000 was an extremely heavy price.

Unnecessary Allied deaths. Blockade and encirclement would have reduced the defenders to nothing within a short time. Allied generals were impatient and shamed their men into fighting in frontal charges against the heavily dug in Japanese positions.
