A fun fact in addition to your statement about butterflies. Moths and butterflies are heavily influenced by the quality of their environment. So much so that during the 1800s in Europe, there was so much coal pollution in the air that it seeped into the local flora. The butterflies and moths wings would become tinged darker due to feeding off of these "corrupted" plants. Lily's slow transformation over the course of the game is actually very similar to this phenomenon.

When I went to look up lore details after completing the game, I found the wiki, which mentioned in Fretia's entry that the clones which appeared in the ritual of transference memory died. I felt this could not possibly be true. Luckily, I found your videos where you've actually done the proper work to look into the lore of this wonderful game. Thanks for doing this, and I hope you get the attention you deserve for these quality videos. I'll note that I think this video in particular solves the biggest mystery left for me after my own personal exploration of the lore, and I think you really nailed it. Understanding the nature of purified blight, Fretia's love for her clones, and these other hinted details retroactively make the story even better (and sadder).

I personally believe that our lily (who I nicknamed the white priestess of the dusk) was the purest of the nine lilies due to her waking up in a world long after any life could be found, given Ferin the perfect opportunity to raise her properly in the ways of the ancients in order to perform the spell to fix the aegis curio and purify Fretia and the blight itself, as she only has love for her mother, the knights of lands end who cared for her and her sisters and the umbral knight who raised and protected her throughout the journey through lands end.

Woah, this channel changed completely my perception of the lore of this game. I was just too focused on the "Hollow Knight & Ender Lilies parallel", but now I see that there's a completely unique and profound universe behind Lilies.

By the way, my interpretation of the butterfly being eaten by a spider metaphor is that it refers to the pure intentions of Myriel being distorted and corrupted by Faden.

Awesome video! Definitely one of the best lore channels out there, that granted a sub. I know I have been late for 2 years and only played the game and watched lore recently, this theory of pure blight fungal being corrupted might answer another mystery of how the crimson lord came to be in the first age. I think the blight was pure at first when the ancient was still around and they might very well to have a mutal beneficial relationship with the acient ones. The white priestess varient might vary well be a harmonized version of fungal and human being after coexisting with each other for so long. The pure blight might also be the only way to how the deathless pact really work, and why the knight leaves an uncorrupted image of oneself instead of the corrupted ones we got once purify strong foes. Getting back to crimson lord, we know the last stand of ancient took place in the verboten and the ambyss area. The place was then left unchecked as the first age came to be. The overwhelming cumulation of hatred by the ancients might have amassed with the blight to created the all powerful crimson lord, that was then left to fester and grow as time went on. It could be this why the crimson lord was so powerful and overflow with blight.

I wondered this as well And for a time (and without any evidence) I thought it was much darker... I thought they (the mages or the king) forcefully impregnated the white priestess since I thought the priestesses kids were totally pure at birth considering the fact that their children who eventually become their replacement aren't affected by the blight at first. So they did "their things"... Then I continued playing for a while and found out they were clones, but I still thought they were the clone of the first child of the white priestess and not the white priestess herself. As for why they would do that to someone they pretty much worship ? Because the king is a greedy asshole and with everything that we learn about him in the game, I thought he could have ordered something like that. So really, thank you for this theory

I think this video in particular addresses one of biggest mysterious still left in the game for me: How does the Blight latch onto actual Souls, and why would it do so? It's one thing for a fungus to be able to grow a human body and infect an entire nation- it's a fantasy after all. But I kept being stumped by why a physical organism would go out of its way to interact with souls and keep them grounded. I like the simple answer of... because it isn't the fungus itself that's doing the fusion, but the residual HATE that it was infused with. A spiritual problem deserves a spiritual answer, and it's a beautifully simple one. Hate can be very similar to a curse in the real world, so why not take it to its absolute extreme in this fictional setting.

Butterflies and moths are also used to represent souls quite often. Very often in: Japanese anime like Bleach, Soul Eater, Hellgirl, ect. Games like "Fatal Frame 2 Crimson Butterfly", (Which Ender Lilies greatly reminds me of) and way more than I can count or list.

Just ran across your videos the other day, and I'm so glad to find someone making theories about the game. Edit: A question about the purified Blight, and maybe a bit of a theory as well. At the end of Ending C Lilly and her sisters purify the Blighted Lord and she carries the blight within her body. With what you're theorizing about with the Pureified Blight having been grown from Miriel's positive emotions, do you think it would be possible for blight that has been absorbed by a White Priestess to eventually transform into Pureified Blight? If Fretia had managed to survive for a few centuries, could it be that she would have been able to possibly purify the Blighted Lord from within? If that's the case, could the imprints of the Blighted Spirits be transformed into Purified Spirits? Also, if the Mages had access to a source of Purified Blight, maybe that's where the wings that the Gaurdians had came from.

I really like the connection of the purified blight and the wings. There are statues of the ancients with wings, supposed they were the ones who originally used the purified blight. It seems to be Fretia's intention to contain and purify the Blight Lord from the inside as she herself mentioned in the first ending. Though the outcome will only be to delay the inevitable. Maybe it's due to her mind not being filled with enough positive emotions(?). As we had seen in her various letters, she has succumbed to sorrow. But now Lily, who still sees hope in this forsaken land, with the help other eight whose wills are carried on by her(they showed up in the final fight of Ending C). Lily might be able to purify the Blight Lord within herself once and for all.

Honestly that safe room is full of dandelions, my neighbour etika is allergic to that plant, i find a different room a lot more comforting, its out of the rain and has a nice bed.
