Today we are looking at the recently released (in English) mod for Skyrim - Enderal. This is unfair to even call a mod since it's basically it's own standalone game using the Skyrim engine. This means there is no dragonborn- no Whiterun- no dragon shouts.. it is its own game in it's entirety.
It has a playtime ranging from 30-100 hours and I found it so good- so compelling.. that's almost all I want to tell you about it besides giving it a recommendation to anyone who loves RPGs.

It didn't do it for me as much as I wished it. I've been playing too much Skyrim lately and exploring more and so I've gotten used to discovering things. Maybe in a year or so I will go back to it. The into did leave a big impression on me though. I've been playing Skyrim for more than 800 hours together and for the past few months I've been playing at least 10 to 20 hours a week so I've been a little exhausting of discovering new things.

So to update on my comment bellow, I finished the game a while ago and i must say it wasn't what i expected to be . Like many trailers it does not show you how the game will be exactly so you cant really expect it to be as good. BUT MY GOD, it was way better than what the trailer showed me. I literally love this game (YES GAME) from the play style to the equipment , the NPC's , the storyline , the worldspace and to the freaking gambling game. I mean this is what would the love child of TES and Witcher series would look like. Its absolutely amazing, and now i hear its getting (or has already got) a new "DLC" that aims to add more content, more quests, etc. If you are looking for a good RPG game, try it now, you wont be disappointed.

*SPOILER-FREE COMMENT* Finished this game less than 10 minutes ago, clocked about 70+ hours at lvl 55+ and done most of the sidequests and loved just about everyting in this game. This story, pace, characters, voiceacting and rebalancing/reinventing the leveling system was on another level of most AAA-rpg games now a days, heck even most games of all genres. Many games you kinda know how it is gonna end or how the story is midway. The good vs evil and black/white story that's all too common, but this game had me surprised and emotional even to the very end. My message to Bethesda: Take note! This is how you make a rpg with a grand story and gameplay! And it's made by some Krauts on their free time for Malphas sake! Big shoutout to the SureAI team, the voice-actors and all supporting teams for this wonderful game, and thank you for everything you have done. PS: My opinion would be best to play Nehrim, the full conversion mod for Oblivon, first as I did to get more lore, backstory and the world of Vyn. But it is not necesarry simply because this is a fullfledged game with all the lore and worldbuilding as you need. PSS: You'll get some donations when my next payment comes, be sure of that. I have sunk 150 hours into Nehrim and Enderal all together so you deserve at least a payment for full game(if not two for that matter).

I finished Enderal 6 months ago. I still think about it from time to time. One thing I realized was how good the Elder Scrolls way to treat player characters can work. While games like the Witcher series have great storytelling, you are always experiencing the story of someone else. TES can make you believe that telling an amazing story without a predetermined character is impossible but Enderal made it work. Spoilers for the ending!: You are an incredibly powerful badass and you can decide what type of badass to be. At the same time, you don't really have control over the world as the enemy is always one step ahead. The player character being incredibly important yet inconsequential allows SureAI to construct a story around the player that leaves room to create your character how you want to without being restricted in telling a linear story. Many games hype up the idea that the players decisions matter but in most cases that results in the overall quality of the game decreasing. In Enderal, you are experiencing your own story yet it is still exactly the story the devs want you to experience.

Today i finished enderal.....i cried at the end...i can't even begin to explain the amount of complex emotions i feeled in this game, the only game i played that understand and makes a great lovecraftian inspired story, without being a horror game And as the video says.. I think about the ending after finishing it, and i could put the things i learned in the expierence in my real life, the message the game makes about mankind and ego, greed, selfishness and how every bad thing that happens is because we are idiots, egomaniacs who believe we are gods, and in refusing to be humble, we create every bad thing in the world I LOVE THIS GAME PLAY IT NOW

Just finished Enderal and I do not know what do with myself. How do I go back to the real world? HOW?? Enderal is so.... livid. Like you connect with the characters. The story, it makes you think. Your choices are real and significant. You are more than a doll doing stuff and walking around. I felt like I wanted to be there. I got scared shitless, I got euphoric, I got sad, I got happy, I cried for buddah's sake! And I have played Skyrim many times and I love it, trully do. But Enderal... Enderal is like a great book, you devour it and live it. Feel every word and every turn of page. You get in sinc with the charaters - at least I did - and I just know, when I go to play it again, I will feel everything even more. Will find even more deep meaning stuff. And damn I want it all again.

Hey Fevir! I feel like most mmorpgs nowadays have a completely different core audience than the classic mmorpgs. It seems these games are more about having competitive pvp and pve, rather than actually having role-playing elements. The last mmorpg to give this feeling of role-play for me was WoW. That game was soaked with theme and lore. It was great, although the game has changed alot since. Mmorpgs these days don't seem to have that. The world, theme, lore are just sort of backdrops for a lobby for the competitive scene, whether dungeons, arena, or straight grinding like BDO. There is no sense of playing a character or role in these games anymore. Any thoughts on this? Maybe we can get another video of you analyzing role-play elements in mmorpgs? :) love your videos btw.

I just finished this mod. My biggest complaints is there are several instances in the story, where your stuck listening to people monologue. And while I know this is part of the story building, it irritates me several of these sort of instances are very forced and entrapping, you can't do anything else but sit there and monologue, and you better hope you don't hit the wrong prompt in some of them, otherwise you will get an instant-game over, and have to sit through it all again. It's a really good mod, however I will not be playing through it more than the one time I did. The ending felt off to me, and knowing what I know know, sort of kills my interest in replaying the game, or hunting down all the small things throughout the game. When playing through the game, I was playing a Stealth Archer using the Conjure bow. As you said, this did make it pretty easy. However, I was also planning on trying other play styles, but by the end of the game, my desire to do so was gone. This game is still a great game, I would recommend it to other people, but personally, I've played it once, and that is more than enough for me.

Instead of releasing skyrim over and over again (which is still great but kind of boring for people who already played it), bethesda could just make Enderal an official release in the steam store. When the game is ass good as everbody tells, I would buy this for 30 bucks immediately. I think giving the option to the developers to make money with their mod which took as long to develope as an entirely new game and giving bethesda a little bit of money for doing all the advertisement and stuff would be a very great deal for booth. And players would benefit from cloud saves, steam achievements, playtime tracking etc. I mean, Enderal adds these changes to skyrim we always wanted. Not just the same skyrim over and over again. It is something completely new.

Yeah support like this from Bethesda would be great but will never happen :( The game is struggling with bigger fps drops in alot of places but SureAI cant do anything about it cause the engine is limited for modding. Bethesda should help them optimizing or port it to the special edition and support for console. But that is alot of work to do. And then they could sell it and hopefully sureai gets some money of it. Ich hätte wahrscheinlich auch gleich in deutsch schreiben können xD

I've played both normal and cheating just to compare and contrast builds for characters. In Enderal enchanting and alchemy is pretty useless. You need scrolls to pick locks for certain chests or waste skill points on lock picking. Magical healing has been nerfed and you are penalized for doing it unless you heal via food which only works out of battle. Archery has been nerfed. The Enderal mod creators have used the perk (memory) system to make a build for a character and to combine skills, but that means taking risks just to test these memory trees and Enderal is much more grindier than Skyrim. I like Enderals graphics better with 1 exception; the way mountains are built into the landscape it forces players to take more of a linear path when moving from place to place and Skyrim feels much more wide open in this case. Both games need or needs patches to fix quests. Enderal's English version has untranslated parts. The biggest frustration for me was trying to do quests based on what thequest journal says or what the characters say to complete them. Sometimes the journals or the dialogue is just wrong on what to do or where to find someone or something. I am not sure if this is a translation issue or just bad writing. I get pissed spending an hour to look for something that is described completely wrong or is vague. In fact I spent more time simply trying to finding things to complete a quest rather than fighting or building up my character. Anything that makes a game more tedious is not fun. Right now I would say I prefer Skyrim out of the 2: For the open world, the mods, and you aren't detered from playing certain classes. Enderal is prettier, more challenging, and does have a better story, when quests work. I didn't like the magical disease you have that increases every time you use magical heals and you can't fix this unless you find or buy potions and this disease is not curable, even after the quest that allegedly is supposed to fix it. Magic (mana) takes much longer to refill and is weak. I had a much easier time playing a warrior class than a mage and it seems the game has it so players are less reliant of magic and more towards playing a classical hero with a sword and shield. Crafting is useless in Enderal. You can get better stuff via quests or finding gear than anything you could craft. it is a waste to bother doing.

Skyrim had better music but that's pretty much it. I agree that this is downright embarrassing to Bethesda in that this free mod is far better than the game Bethesda made. As I was playing Skyrim and wondering why some of the "towns" had like 7 houses and 11 people I was imagining something like this. Towns with a hundred or so people at least. Cities you really get lost in. Homes that have enough items in them to seem like actual homes. And such a better story and such better dialogue. Bethesda has got to be really embarrassed and very seriously hoping the casual player never finds out about this.

@@luminesence9536 the world is almost certainly better than Skyrim's Skyrim's world looked pretty... but as soon as you interacted with it the illusion just kind of falls apart. Almost every single quest feels disconnected with what's going on in the world and as a result feels like it has no consequence to the player. It's just "ok that happened. What's next?" On top of that the cities don't really feel like cities, and you don't really learn anything about Skyrim from interacting with its world other than Skyrim is vaguely inspired by Vikings, is in civil war and dragons are coming back to life. That's it. Enderal's world is so much more cohesive and compelling. All within the first few hours you find out that Enderal is falling into chaos. Bandits control most of the roads, almost every town outside the capital is abandoned or worse, and to top it all off there is a plague that's causing people to go insane. Not only that, but the society that inhabits that same world is deeply religious and conservative, and you get an intimate feel for their culture and how they are dealing with the consequences of current events just by playing the game normally. That is *much* more than what can be said about Skyrim's world building

Spoilers Ahead! To be honest, knowing how the game will ends also can bring up a certain nihilism when making decisions. For example, the first time I got this weird plant-extract that could possibly depopulate big areas, I chose to give it to the apthecaries, cause it is dangerous. The second time I just gave it my contractor because, well... What does it matter. Knowing that the ending is inevitable kinda makes many actions pointless

I agree strongly with your comparison of Enderal with Gothic. I always liked the freedom of TES games but never felt as involved as in Gothic. TES games always seemed too vague to me. But SureAI combines in Enderal the strenghts from TES (Exploring, freedom) and Gothic (involvement, originality) to create a great RPG!

This is definitely my experience the last few times I've tried playing Skyrim. I initially enjoyed my time with Skyrim. I've tried several different mods, including the overhauls like Requiem, Skyre and PerMa. I enjoyed them for a while but ultimately nothing could fix the game enough. Now I'm in that cycle and last time I thought about playing Skyrim I gave up as soon as I started modding it. "I know how this ends." But this total conversion sounds right up my alley and it's worth another install, mostly because it doesn't have the vanilla map and quest line tying it down. For instance, it's a fun idea to mod off fast travel in Skyrim, but the world and quests are designed in such a way that it's a pain in the ass from a practical standpoint. Thanks for the video Fevir.

stasisbal I have Enderal installed atm. Its way more fun than skyrim, and feels kinda like the german style of RPG. Where I find this mod lacking is the technical side, which it cant fix, because its skyrim being fucking utter shit. Crashes and shit that taint the experience for me. I will see how far I get.

Sadly it's the engine that is the limiting factor. The story makes it the best RPG since a long time in my opinion :)

I got bored with Skyrim before I even finished the main quests (never even started the dlc's), same with Fallout 3and 4. But I am lvl 20 on Enderal, and totally into it. Seriously, puts Skyrim to shame.

Can't believe how far out of the loop I am, I only just started this mod a couple weeks ago when it was randomly recommended to me on Steam. I'm not that far into it but absolutely in love with the dialogue and storylines, which is a must for me when I play an RPG. What really sealed itfor me was a moment in the game where an optional dialogue with one of the first characters I met led to us having a conversation about the role of intellectuals. It was literally a conversation that could perfectly summarize the point of one of my favorite books "Intellectuals and Society", by Thomas Sowell. My only complaints are simply the level up system and lack of fast travel, because I personally always loved the elders scrolls leveling systems, and the super convenient fast traveling in Oblivion and Skyrim. I'm not a fan of feeling as if my freedom is limited. I actually loved exploring Oblivion, Skyrim, and the Fallout games, aimlessly, but I also loved being able to fast travel back to town whenever I want, or straight to the location of a quest whenever I want.

it sounds like they're not planning another Vyn/Elder scrolls mod, but half the devs are making their own company and game. so might wanna stick around for that, but vyn's story is likely done, if you want more you'll have to play the older mods, or go read nicholas's book(s) about Vyn/Enderal (Jespar prequel)

this is a really great video, and eloquently summarizes everything i loved about enderal. the story was mature, intelligent, and refreshing. it was a new experience, but just familiar enough for me not to feel lost. as soon as i finished my first playthrough, i sat through the credits (listening to the absolutely gorgeous end theme--the whole soundtrack is astounding, download it!) and upon reaching the main menu screen, jumped right into another playthrough. definitely one of the best games i've experienced in a long, long time.

First off. There are a couple things I wanna get across. Why in gods name your sub count isn't in the millions I cannot mentally comprehend. The way you review is absolutely fucking spot on. Another thing, when I came across the trailer for this, I was on the verge of tears. Skyrim has taken so many hours of my life I'd rather not say how many, and here I was thinking I was done until the next ES game. Well fuck me, here we go again. Godspeed, Fevir.

I agree with Adam's comment about original Skyrim being pretty bland to my taste. And the reason for that is that I always prefer the strong story line and world which cares of what you are doing to the freedom of choice and indifferent world. Usually that freedom translates to me to not knowing what to do and consequently not caring about the world, what is happening and anything else in the game. Hopefully, Enderal actually has good story line to follow...

The next Tes game that bethesda makes should just be a phenomenal creation kit that they hand off to the modders. The modding community could make the best Tes game in existence. Because the unpaid modders are actually competent.

so is this a standalone game that is only accessible as a new game option? or is it something you can take a skyrim character to? and do you have to totally disable it to use skyrim again? oh, and what version of skyrim? because I bought legendary for pc and ps4, and most good pc mods turned out to be incompatible so now I have to hunt down an original copy with expansions which aren't sold anywhere. if this works with legendary I might just get it and keep on as the legendary install and use heavier skyrim mods elsewhere.

So "Skyrim" is better than Skyrim, you know, because Bethesda themselves could have done this since it was done in THEIR engine, but they didn't. All hail Skyrim, conquerer of Skyrim. I'll never play Skyrim again. Only Skyrim. ~ That's how most of the comments here sound, lmfao.

I would consider vanilla skyrim about a 5.5/10. It's a super boring basic RPG with a few cool things popped in here and there. Calling this a 8.5 is a TALL order. Downloading it right meow to see if it's worthwhile. We'll see if its an 8.

I'm not sure I agree that they need their own engine. They're doing great with this engine! They have their work flow down pat. However, it might be criminal that they release this for free. The victim of this crime being themselves. Who hosts the files anyway? That's got to cost somebody money... Sure, they could benefit from a better engine. But that would mean they need to code their own engine. Maybe they don't have that expertise or manpower right now? So that would mean they need to enlist multiple people to do that. They would also have to upend their workflow. As the project scope grows with that investment, the personality disappears. It becomes more about making sure their risky investment is safe. If they form a publicly traded company, they're just going to fall prey to everything we hate about bloated game companies. Investors telling them to make awful decisions, awful deadlines, overworking, etc. I'm in favor of letting the work be done as easily as possible with no hurdles. Look, there's a feature complete engine that they can build the game of their dreams in! Have at it! And if their work is good, don't let them do it for free. I found that they have merchandise and a donation(/patreon?) link on their site. I haven't used this mod, but if I download it and I like it, then I'm paying them for their work!

Sadly did not enjoy it. Story felt kinda crappy. Skyrim's story was not great but this actually was worse for me. Also potion mechanic I found to be kinda dumb. Alchemical ingredients do not have there effects do to any arcane influence, but rather their biological make, how that interacts with other ingredients, and how those ingredients affect the player's body. Arcane fever is an interesting mechanic but should not have been applied to potions in that way.

I am going to tell you something that may so odd. I don't like bethesda because of stuff like this. Bethesda makes good games but this modding scene that come out of their games is just incredible. When the whole paid mods thing came out I thought well this will be a good fix to getting these passionate into the games creating games. Of course it was setup in an awful way, it could work It would never work how they were had it setup. When Bethesda games are being used as nothing more then a engine it is almost sad, But happy that stuff like this is coming out at least. I really hope that people like this can find success elsewhere they deserve to be more, of cost that is also their choice.

why does it have to be a new game? why not become a dlc so you can be dragonborn and enderal champion or whatever at the same time and in the process experience both games aspects in the same world using the same character like suppose the people at enderal have their own style of daedric equipment so do the people of skyrim therefore add more variety but maybe that's just me wanting to play 2 games with 1 character.
