Unless you use WinRE which doesn't have this limitation. Its possible to build your own WinRE Environment that uses the full Windows Registry stack but its a lot of effort can result in 3.5GB images or so.

I wish Microsoft would take this kind of approach to Windows Installers. Being able to use a mini-Desktop environment, and do things, while Windows is installing in the background to your hard disk or SSD. It'd be neat, and possible too, since Windows ISOs are becoming too big for standard DVDs, and require DVD Dual-Layers, Blu-Rays, and/or Flash Drives now.

Dude,I used Windows 10 with a DVD for 4 years. I literally introduced the bootable DVD into the drive and ran it using the BIOS boot menu. Now i'm on Windows 11 :)

Yes, but Linux also has a live kernel and is free so no installer protection. Windows dose not have a live kernel so it is much harder to do things like that. For exemple when linux crashes it can still run on a "fall back" system but even with that extremely serious problems will result in a kernel panic which is the linux bsod. Linux can also update while it is being used and not require a reboot sometimes and you can delete the whole system and do have it run (at a very primitive standard however) with no issues. With all those in mind you know why it took so much to make windows live.

@@iGamezRo you have winpe since vista in 2007. And look at hiren's boot cd: it has a minixp which runs on ram. Also kernel panics are usually on startup rather than while it's running.

@@iGamezRo because Linux and most Unix-like operating systems' kernel is separated from its programs called "userspace" and most kernel panics usually caused by userspace programs or kernel modules and doesn't affect the kernel itself so that's why there is fallback mode which is basically a minimal set of userspace programs for system rescue. And if the kernel is corrupted or has a problem it can be swapped easily.

A DVD-RAM disc might be better, as those behave like USB flash drives, just much slower. They can be rewritten and work with filesystems like FAT32. Most DVD computer drives support them, although not sure if you can boot off them.

This is called Windows PE. Windows had this mode for ages. I still have an old ISO with Windows 7 PE on it (I made it about 8 years ago), complete with drivers and some applications on it. I still use it sometimes when working with older PCs. There's a project called Windows 10 PE SE which allows creation of custom ISOs complete with drivers and other software.
