I took it as the zombies got tuned because they wanted only to "live" and the crew is holding "death" because that's what they've accepted that's what will happen, while best girl looks towards the zombies and away from the crew as she still hasn't totally accepted it yet.

I was thinking that because she turned away it was because she is the only one actively trying to act with the groups best interest, meanwhile the others do what they want rather than what is best. Since they all faced the wall, I saw that as the group being blind to what's around them. They only focus on the present, whilst best girl is always looking ahead to prepare for dangers that could arise. In other words, without her watching out for all of them, they'd be facing the wall, aka, death. She's the pinnacle of the group. She holds everything together. I think your viewpoint fits this better.
