An explanation to describe what is happening around the 11 minute mark: 1. Your units don't actually have any of that new gear yet. You missed the button in the bottom of the unit window that allows you to retrofit existing units to have new gear. This probably would have saved your army as in Endless Legend it is much better to have a small number of really high level units than to have a lot of different low level units. 2. Units in a garrison get bonus HP that takes damage first. So you were right about that. 3. You need different tech to unlock different tiers of material armor/weapons. For example, the tier 1 tech tree has an unlock for tier 1 glassteel weapons, and the tier 2 tech tree has an unlock for higher tier glassteel weapons. 4. Trinkets added to creatures can be a big difference. For example, one of the trinkets for added damage could have brought the rumbler's damage-per-hit up by about 20%. So try to equip some next time. 5. Counterattacks act differently than you think. Units only get to deal damage once per turn (unless they have a specific trait). If a unit gets attacked before its initiative comes up, then that unit attacks whoever hit it (if it can, melee units can't attack over cliff faces while fliers can) and then the unit is locked in place (gets skipped in initiative that turn). The exception to this is ranged units such as your mages. Ranged attacks (even point blank ones) don't cause counter attacks, and attacks on ranged units don't lock those ranged units in place because they do not use up their counter attack. 6. Elevation matters. Attacking up-hill is a penalty, attacking down-hill is a bonus. Defending in a forest is a bonus. This isn't well documented and the popups for advantage on this don't give exact stats. 7. You can queue up multiple orders by ctrl-clicking. Such as walking units to another position and then attacking. This could have helped you get a little bit better terrain.

Two more things 8. You have the army tech for 6 stack units. So you could combine those two armies together. 9. It is possible to simply pay dust to heal a hero to full via the academy screen. Usually its better to just buy a new hero and let them heal naturally (except when they are high level heroes or extra heroes are expensive).

Cultists can only have (or at least found) one city - they get their units from converted villages - stomp them as fast as you can because, left unchecked, they can and will destroy you.

quill: You can retrofit units to the most current design of their type. Meaning if you have the dust then temporary removing all gear makes the units faster to produce and you can then change the unit design to include gear and pay dusst to instantly upgrade them.

After watching a few vids, I know I'm going to get this game. Visually it looks like a high quality board game stylized after the GoT intro. Gameplay wise, it seems so much more fluid than Civ.

I recommend you go back to tier two tech and get the 3 unit for the mages that is also where you will find the tech to embark

I feel like you should be investing more in fully armoured units. Even on the ranged ones with the breatplates and more stuff because they are always getting hit.

You're likely fighting fully armed and armored units. Your mages were glass cannons - no defence or hp, because you didn't put any armor on them.

Do units in this game deal less damage if their health is lower? I get that the AI doesn't focus fire because if you do that, there's a risk of overkill and wasted damage, but does spreading out your attack weaken all attacked units?

Quill for the love of god use your resource boosts, I know the. Series is probably done already but this would have been so much easier if you had used the boosts. All of the have an empire happiness boost of At least 10 and a bonus to food, production, money, or science. I think the quick silver you had in your territory could have given you a 20% boost to defense permanently if you had produced enough.

So if I understand correctly, you can only tell them what to attack, but not _how_. I see your Rumblers are missing a lot of good Beam attack opportunities, but I figure that's just because you don't have full control and the AI is not amazing at figuring out perfect attack angles (or maybe you lost movement when you are alredy engaged?) As an aside, I think you would fare a lot better in combat if you focused your fire more. I'm a little surprised you let your troops spread out their damage like that considering you've played a lot of games like this one before.

Actually, you can. The game doesn't explain it very well, but when you're setting up your assignments you can click on a tile and then control click on a target to say "go here then attack that". Of course, if your initiative is low then it can mess up your plans since the enemy units can rearrange themselves before you unit gets to move, or they can attack your unit which will cause it to use up it's attack on a counter-attack, but you can certainly plan those sorts of things out.

You have a queue at the top thats based on your initiative and tells you the order the units will act in. Your units also have an amount of movement points per turn, and when you select them their radius is highlighted around them. With "CTRL+Click" you can queue move and attack commands ... . So you can actually micromanage heavily, and as the necrophages you also need to do that. It's just done in a weird indirect way :p

PLEASE RETROFIT YOUR UNITS. you should never cancel your production, restart the 2.0 version of the unit. instead, just retrofit. there is a button. costs only dust and strategic resources. also: use ctrl -> move -> attack to make sure your rumblers are in the right position. i.e. go there, then attack. and use hold position and so on for units that will die anyway. order them to run to a save hex and stay there, so if the battle is over, they can heal up in time. it is a bad idea to waste units.
