In real life as well as the show. Erin Murphy, who played Tabatha remembered how, during filming of the show, that between takes Elizabeth Montgomery ignored her, but Dick York, and in particular, Agnes Morehead took the time to be with her and treated her like real family.
@mikejohnson5153 жыл бұрын
@@artistjoh Didn't know that!

@@mikejohnson515 Erin Murphy did an interview on Australian television in which she talked a lot about how she was treated as a young actress. Her fond memories were reserved for York and Morehead. She considered Morehead as her at-work grandmother and apparently adored her. She thought of Dick York as her second father. Dick Sargent, on the other hand, didn’t get a mention.
@kerrykeene64713 жыл бұрын
I've never heard where Erin has said that Liz ignored her. I'll tell everybody what Erin Murphy has said, she loved Elizabeth Montgomery and looked upon to her as a mother figure. If she did something on set that she wasn't supposed to do, she said Elizabeth would correct her by saying, Erin Margaret ... Erin said that is exactly how her own mom would do it. Oh, she called Elizabeth Mantha mommy. She couldn't say Samantha. 🙂 She called York and Sargent Darrin daddy. 🙂 Liz didn't ignore her. In fact, Erin grew up with Elizabeth's own children, visiting her home to play with her kids and as an adult. If Liz had ignored her, I sincerely doubt that she would've been involved in the 1998 auction of Lizzie's clothes and other possessions and be present at the unveiling of the statue in Salem and Liz's star on Hollywood Blvd. I've also read that she would go Trick Or Treating with Elizabeth and her kids, which was one of Lizzie's favorite time of the year. No, Erin loved Liz and is still close with Elizabeth's three adult children. Watch the chemistry between the two. Some of it was acting but, most was real. Watch the endings to SAMANTHA AND THE BEANSTALK and TABITHA'S VERY OWN SAMANTHA. In both, one can see the love between the two, especially the latter episode where Tabitha (Erin) throws her arms around her mom's (Elizabeth) neck. That was real. Finally, Erin Murphy was asked once what Elizabeth Montgomery was like. She said that Elizabeth was "on" on and off set, meaning she was fun. This confirms what Herbie Pilato, Elizabeth's biographer, said in a 48 minute interview on Elizabeth last year. No matter what set she was working on, he said that she was always charming and she iust wanted to be like regula folks. I think that's why people still love her. Oh, Sony is in the process of bringing a BEWITCHED movie to the screen. Unlike the 2005 movie, this one will follow on where the series left off. Let's hope.
@artistjoh3 жыл бұрын
@@kerrykeene6471 Erin did say that on set Elizabeth Montgomery would disappear inside her dressing room between takes and it was primarily Agnes Morehead who would take care of her at these times, and to a lesser extent, Dick York. This statement said nothing about interactions outside of the shooting schedule. In that particular interview Erin was only discussing what happened during shooting and never mentioned private interaction after hours. Just private interactions between takes. It does appear that Elizabeth was the consummate professional while working and that she was good at defining boundaries between her private and working life. A substantial part of her rift with Dick York (who she also had an off-set personal friendship with during the first year or so of the show’s production that ended as his disability and addictions got worse) was due to her views on professionalism on set, and her love of adhering to fixed tight filming schedules. It is this reason why she was close to Dick Sargent both on and off the set even though fans largely rejected him in the role of Darrin, because Sargent was like her in being highly professional on set. In that interview Erin never mentioned Sargent, but did refer to York as her second daddy and emphasized that she saw Morehead as a grandma. This is very striking because, since Morehead died only a few years after the show ended, there is much less known about her attitudes at the time outside of stories that she could be a diva on set. Erin’s account shows that Morehead was a very likable person.

@stmichl94333 жыл бұрын
It's funny how fans conflate reality and the storyline! Without Darrin admonishing Samantha, you would have no show to watch. Narratives are always built around conflict in order to teach a morality tale. Always been that way and always will be. Bewitched is a morality tale about bigotry and "otherness" as well as what happens when the sacred intersects with the profane. The show's premise is based around Ancient Greek storytelling ideas about the gods falling in love with mortals. It is actually the most ancient storyline in humanity, but it was modernised and situated into a comedic plotline. But at its core it elicits all our ancient human fears about our smallness in the universe, our desire to be unified with the gods and about our latent spiritual and supernatural powers which have been largely suppressed by capitalistic, western society. Bewitched is a timeless show and loved because audiences could discern within its narrative arc those ancient themes and myths that have always been with us.

For me, what makes BEWITCHED so good is, it had/has a story in each episode. Norman Lear changed the tenor of TV by introducing in your face topics of the day, but I found sitting on set arguing issues, ALL IN THE FAMILY, etc., got boring. I like the she and it was groundbreaking, but them sitting in Achie & Edith's home every week debating the issues of the day became claustrophobic. CHEERS is another example. Did they ever leave the bar? Sam was always doing something in the neighborhood, saving the park, working for UNICEF, helping kids, in other words, doing things someone does in their neighborhood and city. Love it.

He's great. Best Darrin. 👍 Girl who played Endora (actress named Agnes) was best buds with him and regretted a lot when he left Bewitched. The next Darrin is snoozefest lol, she didn't like him.

Sandra Gould is extremely funny and did a really good job replacing Alice Pearce with her own style of comedy.

This is Sandra's first episode as Mrs. Kravitz.

Yeah I liked both Kravitz actreses, but I absolutely adored the comedic acting style of the first Gladys: Alice Pearce. She was just a brilliant and memorable character actress! She still cracks me up today, decades later, when I watch these reruns and how she opens her mouth gobsmacked in slow motion at what she's just witnessed and screams a certain Gladys'ish horrified shriek that is truly very "Gladys Kravitz". I also just love it when she goes all glassy-eyed and becomes a whacked out zombie after she's seen some feat of uncensored magic at the Stephen's and especially the little side shows of her and Abner riffing off each other and Abner disbelieving her always with his usual "Take yer medicine Gladys" one liner to shut her up, and often wielding with a massive, oversized spoon at her and he would give her a bottle of some "medicine"! I always used to wonder as a kid: "what in the hell is in that bottle? What WAS in fact Glady's "medicine"???? Lol 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 The Kravitz's were really one of the first memorable Jewish husband and wife teams on American mid-century television! I mean, Abner & Gladys to me symbolise a certain kind of interesting, suburban, Jewish "ethnic otherness" amidst the wonderloaf whiteness and Crisco sameness of American TV land of the 1950s-1970s. In an ironic way, maybe in that surreal TV reversal of the natural order, maybe it was the Kravitz's who were the real freak show for the TV viewing audience and not the Stephens? In the zanily clever Bewitched babka 'upside down cake' universe of the show's director, the Jewish William Asher (Liz Montgomery's real- life Husband), here we have the Jewish couple "looking in" from the outside at all the mental and mystical craziness of their gentile American neighbours!! Only some 10 plus years since the end of the horrors of World War Two, here we had an older, childless, Jewish couple wondering about the sanity and normalcy of their good looking, white, gentile neighbours! So much so, that within this reversal of societal norms where "otherness" ( Witchiness, miscegenation, Jewishness, gayness, campness and acting up) was made the central theme of the show, 1960s post-war audiences were somehow introduced to a new type of human character type via the Bewitched teleplay, all the while just passing for a regular situation comedy. Therein lay Asher's genius. Part of this insertion of a new type of queerness into American life weren't just the more obviously gay characters like Uncle Arthur, but the obliquely more queer ones like Gladys & Abner Kravitz. The development of the camp character of Gladys Kravitz literally became forever cemented in American pop culture as a kind of archetype of the gossipy, nebbishy, next door neighbour largely in part because of Alice Pearce's brilliant interpretation of the iconic character and her wonderful stagecraft. Sandra Gould was an excellent casting replacement choice though, after Alice passed away from cancer. Gould played it though with less of a classic comic style and with more of an ernest or more 1970s "quasi-detective show-style" suspiciousness and almost "mean-spiritedness", wonderful as she was too.... whereas Alice, the original Gladys - whilst suspicious of the Stephen's' - was always also so loveable somehow - despite her shlocky and very nebbishy nosiness, we (and clearly Samantha) adored her kooky, goofy and somehow good-natured and actually very intuitively-correct nosiness. We should all be as clever as Gladys K! Old Gladys was no intellectual slouch, after all! She may have been a house-frau, but she was a whip-smart one, as housewives of that generation seemed to be: rather than the career feminists that their 1970s and 80s sisters became, the Gladys Kravitz's of immediate post-war America were feminists in spirit: resourceful, cluey, pushy, inquisitive and no man's doormat! Gladys gave as good as she got! She wore the pants in the family even when Abner was trying to do what men and male doctors always did back then: sedate the "hysterical woman"! Let it not be forgot that the woman was onto something! Abner's oily medicine was the patriarchal metaphor for the sedation of the newly wised -up and wisecracking, backchatting woman in postwar America, led perhaps not only by Samantha (a protofeminist for sure) but by the pushy no-nonsense Gladys. Jew and gorgeous Gentile leading the charge in their own ways against the world of mainstream mortal men! The world is certainly a far lesser place without all those nosy parker Gladys Kravitz bossy bitches of yesteryear who kept our neighbourhoods safe from witches and yet simultaneously and paradoxically, raised hell!

They were smart not to hire someone to try to mimic Alice Pearce. That would never have worked. Sandra Gould was an original.

Richard Crenna was also in the mix to play Darrin, but declined as he had just completed THE REAL MCVOYS. Sol Saks originally wanted Tammy Grimes to play Cassandra, that's right. But she was tied up and she wanted Cassandra to use her witchcraft to solve world problems. Would you believe that Grimes' character's name on her show was Tamantha? 😀 Then Elizabeth Montgomery was offered the role, she jumped on it, changed the name Cassandra to Samantha and she and her character made TV history by becoming TV's first stereotype breaking witch, beautiful, kind, loving, smart, a sense of humor, and independent. BEWITCHED and Elizabeth/Ssamantha became beloved icons along with a great cast and production crew. I'm just going to say a few thing about this debate on York/Sargent. Most people's views are already baked in. Considering Sargent was supposedly the first choice (some say Asher always wanted York, not sure), and considering he was a closeted gay man playing a straight married man and then leaving at the end of the day to a bigoted world, where he could've been arrested in some parts of this country or even assaulted. That's called fear. That had to be tough emotionally on him. The cast knew it and respected who he was, as they did Maurice Evans and Paul Lynde. But neither of them received the negative feedback, some hateful, over a role on a TV series. Elizabeth not only became Sargent's friend, but his biggest supporter. In my view, Sargent's Darrin was done as a more mature person, less likely to blow up, and when he did, his anger was generally directed at Sam's relatives. Too many times, York's Darrin directed his anger at Sam, which York didn't like. Sargent tried to do the character similar to York in season six, but he toned it down. Oh, Dick York thought Sargent did a fine job. Chemistry: SAMANTHA AND THE BEANSTALK, particularly the ending. ... AND SOMETHING MAKES FOUR, where Darrin goes in and sees Sam in her room. The loving kisses they shared OKAY. WHO'S THE WISE WITCH? Throughout, Darrin is frustrated, but didn't. freak. Lov bthe ending. There are more examples. Finally, when Sargent finally came out in 1991, a friend of his said it was like the weight of the world had been lifted off his shoulders. When Liz found out, she was so happy for him and said, "In or out of the closet, I love him." When he died, she said, "I am going to miss his sense of humor, his love, and his courage." That's one of the highest honor a friend can bestow on another. Bottom line, all of this doesn't matter, since it's been almost fifty years when the show ended and all but a few cast members are dead.
