In a riveting showdown at the 2024 Ales Trem Hard Enduro race in southern France, the world of extreme enduro bore witness to an unforgettable duel. Wade Young and Mario Roman, separated by mere seconds, engaged in an epic battle that will go down in history as one of the most dramatic finishes this event has ever seen.
Wade Young, stepping into the world of GASGAS for the first time, faced the daunting task of mastering a new machine. Meanwhile, his former teammate from Sherco Factory Racing, Mario Roman, pushed him to the absolute limit throughout the grueling seven-hour race.
Ales Trem is renowned for its unforgiving terrain, with only six riders managing to conquer the challenging course that commenced at 10 am and concluded at 5 pm for the top contenders.
The race ultimately became a test of endurance and skill, as Mario Roman relentlessly closed the gap on Wade Young during the final lap. The tension reached its zenith as they tackled the last hillclimbs in the stadium paddock area. In an unwavering display of determination, Young powered through the final man-made section, consisting of tires and rocks, to secure his second consecutive victory at Ales Trem.
Wade Young's remarkable performance, including setting the fastest time during Saturday's timed runs, has ignited hopes for a promising season in the Hard Enduro World Championship.
Despite nursing a clutch finger injury, Mario Roman exhibited unparalleled grit, catching up with the leaders in the final lap and giving Young a run for his money.
Claiming a well-deserved third place, Alfredo Gomez trailed the leaders by 19 minutes. Meanwhile, Teo Kabakchiev, making his debut for the Sherco Factory enduro team, settled for fourth place, revealing his potential in the early laps but ultimately falling short in the final stretch.
The race featured a roster of 500 riders, with Michael Walkner rounding out the top five. Fabien Poirot, the sole Frenchman among the competitors, persevered to become the last official finisher, successfully navigating all 27 checkpoints spread across the three demanding laps.
