This episode of ENE TV takes you to western Maine and the Rangeley Lakes Region as it experiences its spring awakening. Kicking things off is a fly-fishing trip hosted by guide Mona Brewer on the famed Kennebago River, home to a population of native brook trout. Mona, a longtime angler who also gives fly-fishing lessons, is continuing the tradition of women fishing guides in the Rangeley Region, a legacy established by Cornelia “Fly Rod” Crosby in the late 1800’s.
We fish three different sections of the river, using both dry flies and streamers. We encounter no samples of the large trout and landlocked salmon that have made the Rangeley area a popular sporting destination for almost two centuries, but the scenery and advice from Mona more than make up for any lack of monster fish.
Also featured is a visit to the Saddleback Mountain Ski Resort, which recently reopened after a five-year hiatus. Mountain Ops Manager Jared Emerson gives a tour of the newly created mountain bike trails built on the lower mountain. Saddleback also rents bikes and gear to riders of all ages, and offers chair lift service.

Kayaking and paddleboard enthusiasts will be interested in the paddling segment filmed with Seth Laliberte of Ecopelagicon Rangeley Adventure Company. Ecopelagicon offers canoe, kayak, pedalboat, and SUP rentals on Haley Pond, as well as guided trips and lessons. Inside the store, you’ll find a variety of outdoor-related books, guides, maps, gear, clothing, and other products. In this segment, we paddle across Haley Pond to a picnic area and trail system owned by the Maine Forestry Museum. Paddlers are welcome to stop here to stretch their legs on the trail leading to the museum. Haley Pond is also home to one of the camping sites along the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, which stretches 740 miles and follows water routes used by Native Americans for trade and seasonal migration.

Of course, the Rangeley area teems with birdlife, especially in spring, as highlighted by our morning with local wildlife photographer Nick Leadley. As we walk along a narrow logging road, Nick scans the surrounding forest for birds. This corner of Maine is part of an important flyway for migrants such as warblers, including northern parulas, magnolia warblers, yellow warblers, black-and-white warblers, Nashville warblers, and others. At one point, Nick is able to zero in on a yellow-rumped warbler and a red-breasted nuthatch with his 600mm lens. It was fascinating to see how Nick combines hunting techniques with knowledge of bird habitat and behavior to get his amazing shots!

Later in the episode, we investigate Rangeley Lake State Park, which features tent and RV sites on Rangeley’s southern shore. The park also has a boat launch and slips, as well as a swimming and picnic area, for both day-users and campers.

Also featured is the Rangeley Inn & Tavern in downtown Rangeley. This sprawling historic inn retains the look and charm of Rangeley’s heyday in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when “rusticators” would spend entire summers in the region to escape the sweltering urban centers. The amenities have since been upgraded, of course, and the inn offers a wide range of well-appointed rooms and suites, including many overlooking scenic Haley Pond.

If you are interested in the history of the Rangeley area, you will enjoy the segment on the Outdoor Heritage Museum in Oquossoc Village. The museum contains a remarkably large and varied collection of exhibits and artifacts relating to the Rangeley Region’s past, including a collection of Paleo-Indian stone tools, an original fur-trapper’s cabin, a birchbark canoe, early ski equipment, and, of course, plenty of enormous mounted fish. A large section of the museum is devoted to Rangeley’s sporting past, which began in the early to mid-1800s as word of the region’s enormous brook trout spread. Soon, sporting camps and inns were welcoming avid anglers and hunters from all over the world. Local legends such as Herb Welch, Carrie Stevens, Ed Grant, and Fly Rod Crosby are well represented, and the museum even contains the world’s largest collection of streamer flies tied by Stevens.

Spent many years in Rangeley. My first summer job was at the inn with Kay and Ed. Washing dishes. I then moved on to working for Lou building houses in the area. Spent one summer building a Camp on the great camp road along side the Tver you we’re lucky enough to fish on. A real Gem of a Town.

Wish we could have stayed and filmed the area longer. Love the Kennebago, but need to come back and catch a big brookie. That must have been a great summer building a camp up there.

Thanks Terry. Perhaps we need to film something in the Adirondacks, even though it's a bit outside our purview.
