I remember hearing a theory that Tav was Astarion's answered prayers he had prayed for, for 200 years. That without Tav, he is incapable, or at least INSANLEY unlikely to change and make better decisions for himself. If you show up with the Cazador fight without him, even Cazador tells you that Astarion either needs him, or Tav because it's all he's ever known and without someone to guide him, he's lost and doesn't know what to do with himself. I know he is his own person, but I really do like that idea that Tav is his crutch. He's going to need a LOT of healing and guidance, but then again- what is immortality for, if not time and patience? He's got an eternity to learn how to stand on his own two feet. For now, I don't mind being his voice of reason, and the shoulder he can lean on when he needs a nudge in the right direction. I know he's the most popular romance option, he's mine too and I personally think his story and arch is the best one in the game, but he's so much more then a romanced object. I love watching him not only fall in love with Tav, but also realize he has friends. Real, actual friends who love him and care about him, for him. I LOVE seeing him interact with Karlach, they have such a sibling like bond. Shadowheart softens up to him too. All the companions grow to love and care about each other, even if some aren't willing to admit that. So when Astarion goes in for the Cazador fight, he goes in knowing not only Tav has his back, but the rest of his friends as well. I adore this character so much.

Good speech! I’ll never fight with Cazador without Astarion so I didn’t know this dialog about guidance and being lost without other person. But it makes sense and I totally agree with all u said here. And I really like how characters are changing through every run and I’m always so touched when they’re saying only supportive comments after knowing about Cazador’s ritual (in my game of course, I can’t be cruel for them, let’s be honest xD I love creating bonds) and when I’m hearing „we will not leave Astarion alone with this” my heart is melting 🤩

he has a lot of good and compassionate scenes, it depends on the gamer's choices "in the endgame, he immediately starts screaming" Of course, what else reaction should be? And even after he says that it's pity and he will always appreciate Tav

I've seen almost all his scenes (got about 20 hours of recorded footage with choosing almost all the dialog), and there are like... 10 at best I'd call compassionate (probably calming down Durge is the most compassionate?). The fact he can throw a tantrum and yell at Tav even in the ending scene if she leaves him tells me he doesn't REALLY change. That works for me, but imho he's hardly a hero character, and when you don't try to make him one he's at his best.

@@ForsakenWwitchery of course he isn't a hero or the kindest person, he is chaotic and selfish, but not evil before the ritual. he has a lot of comments and approvals from good things (not only scenes and dialogues), like saving tieflings and gnomes from Moonrise tower, arabella, nighsong and etc etc we can support and develop him or destroy him in many different ways and this is why he is so interesting< his story and routes (ascendant and non-ascendant with many variations)

It's hard to find people that think this rationally about Astarion's character because most people are caught up with how much they love him and have blinders on. Or they only really love him for his trauma and they relate to it and don't want to acknowledge that he has darkness that doesn't go away.

I never got that Karlach dialogue when she says "Go f*ck yourself, Astarion." From the background I assume it's right after the Ascension. But I had her with me several times and she never said this. What does trigger that line? Oh and great edit!! The song fits perfectly 😄

I'm not gonna lie, we probably have very different interpretations of Astarion's character but that's kinda the beauty of his writing, no? He's just so complicated, it's difficult to cram his moral compass into a box. He's a former slave who doesn't care about other slaves which does in fact make him kinda awful but then you realize his morality is shaped by the fact that he believes no one has ever helped him and the one time he tried to help? (i.e. the one where he reveals that he spared a boy that Cazador was meant to feed on) he was locked in a tomb for a year, unable to move and starved. He's a man who's so unbelievably spurned by his circumstances that he ends up lashing out at everyone around him as a result. No one's ever been kind to him, so he believes he shouldn't have to be kind either. Of course, none of the excuses his actions. They are just explanations of his actions. At the end of the day, he's still not a very good person. He can simply...become better. Never quite good or redeemed but better and he could be on the road to redemption, should the player ever continue the story on in their head or if Larian wants to continue the story. In the end, I think his story is symbolism for the cycle of abuse. A cycle of cruelty. Vellioth, the former vampire master of Cazador, did to Cazador what Cazador would later do to Astarion such as torturing him and starving him. Astarion is what a scared man is, lashing out at the world cause he's been so hurt that he will simply hurt others before they hurt him. The player probably shouldn't enable his worst fears and behavior if they want to set him on the road to redemption because allowing all that to happen is what ends up turning him to an abuser like Cazador.

I don't see Astarion and shadowheart being lovers like I get they are similar, but I don't see Astarion help shadowheart break free from shar I don't think he would care if she went evil. nor do I see shadowheart helping Astarion or caring about him because you first have to get past the wall he puts up and shadowheart at the start and even at the end only cares about her mission
