I've read in the wiki that they attack bushes because the player can partially hide in them, its like a "search player" behavior. Maybe he could smell you and was looking for you

I can confirm this from experience. They do walk to bushes when I'm hiding until they find me. Most times they go straight up to me, defeating the hiding mechanism.

I was running back to my base with full stealth armor on normal mode. I ran into a large group of pale and skinny canibals. I hid in a bush and after a minute the skinny’s started to beat the crap out of each other.

I figured it out you get a pretty solid base with lots of supplies good bones creepy armor all good if you trap it up because they didnt seem to spawn inside but some animals like lizards and sometimes deer but it's honestly really safe

I believe the reason why they start attacking the bushes is, that the cannibal's AI checks if it gets stuck while patroling. That check is performed rather rare, because it doesn't matter too much what cannibals are doing when the player isn't around. Anyway, back to why they attack bushes. Bushes are all over the world, and when a cannibal is stuck their usual target or goal of going to some position to pray or build effegies is replaced temporary with "find the next bush and go to it / attack it". If the path now is clear they continue their route. If not, they go to the next bush until the path is predicted to be clear, since they strayed away from their original path.

About a guy, who attacks bushes:usually they do it if they here something unusual,but do not see anyone - just a precaution behaviour against any cheaters, who may be sitting in these bushes and filming their patrol

Thanks for all your great work! Enemy behaviour is fascinating. What I have been wondering is, "Can the natives learn?" I ask this because I have noticed, when using the Happy Birthday trap, initially they get caught every time... but.. as time goes by.. I see them jumping over the trigger bar on the ground. This seems to imply that they have learned . to avoid the trigger bar on the ground. Wondering if you have noticed this . I can't remember you talking about them learning. Ive seen canninbals doing that bush attack while I was hiding in the bushes. Well first I came slowly to them and then started to run faster and hide in the bushes. As soon as I hidden myself into bushes they were searching that area where I runned and then suddently they started to attack each bush... well untill the club canninbal hit me in the bush while I was observing them what they do. When he found then they were all screaming at me and were triggered. I was like: Dafuq how did you know I was in the bushes? They are getting smarter in each updates. But they still need to fix the damn stuck on walls running. Anyway hope I helped. Please try this at your next testing episode or part 3! :)

I know this is so late and all but the reason the cannibals hit the bushes is they are looking for you(the players) , to try it out , wear a stealth armor , find some cannibals , run and let them chase you to the dense forest and you crouch in a bush , they will randomly hit any bushes trying to find you

I think they're dying from cold. I've run in to it before, basically a 'siege' at night, where a few bodies were found in the morning despite a lack of anything that should have killed them.

I know it's been years since you posted this, but I wanted to let you know that I saw one of the cannibals die once. I was sneaking past him and he just fell over. Nothing was around him. He was standing still, perfectly fine, and then fell face forward. I thought maybe he was messing with me or something, but when I went to check, he was dead.

I think the reason they stopped and built ephagies when they spotted the house is because they may have thought a player was present. So, when they build the ephagies, they’re leaving them as a warning sign. Like “Hey we know you’re here, and will be back”.

I can confirm that if you build a wall far enough away encasing yourself within it that the cannibals will not bother you. I tried this on a game of mine. I was able to live comfortably inside the wall for days. Cannibals would check out my wall and create effigys outside but they would never attack it or climb it. Just look, scream or holler and walk/run off. I only had a prebuilt cabin inside, so if you were to make a huge base you may or may not still be spotted. The first time i booted this game up, the Geese, (not ducks Farket) were doing that in the air. but it was all of them in the flock. I wondered if i had ambiance settings on minimum or something like that. Asked my friend, he didnt see them at all. Idk about his settings or if it was too dark etc, but he didnt hear them either.

Normally if im playing on harder difficulties, i make my main base a boat on a beach with a ton of traps so that in case i get attacked by a horde, i can just leave with the boat without losing any stuff, and since they go looking for your bases and sometimes go in the base and wait for you to come, i build many different structures across the map to throw them off and they end up going to the wrong base most of the time. I still get attacked but i have to deal with a lot less than if i just do one base. And if you want to avoid fighting big monster mutants (armsies, cowman, ect) Dont destroy effigies to avoid spawning armsies, and dont destroy too much nature ( cutting down trees, killing animals, breaking bushes ect) to avoid virginias and cowmans. Hope this helped

it can be done on early on in a new game. If you refuse to fight them and just block and do this for a few days then they will stop attacking you. Unless you kill too many of them. If you kill one of them on accident then burn the body and hide the evidence. Later in the game if you've already killed a ton of them then pacifying them is not possible I believe. Also skinny cannibals will attack you no matter what along with mutants

There's a mod that names enemies (hilarious) and shows a life bar for each. I noticed that many random ones die for no reason (and get stupidly high damage their life goes from 50s-100s to negative 800s sometimes).

I have a base set up near the tree, and the patrol comes by and I usually watch from my tower I made. At least 20 cannibals have just collapsed and died, including leaders and alphas. No idea why. They just collapse. Earned the serial killer achievement after only killing 3 of them.

8:25 eating raw meat takes quite the long time for species that are not developed for it. Cannibals are whats left of the humans from that island if I remember and humans are not really made for eating raw meat. Yes they might only eat meat but that doesn’t mean they are fully developed for it, evolution takes thousands of years to have an effect of how the abilities of beings change. This was an very unnecessary comment but I just wanted to write about this because I find this subject very interesting. Love your vids!

Explanation why sometimes cannibals die: The cannibals sometimes somehow get bugged through the ground then they start falling and then they fall so far down that they get killed and get set back onto the map its like when log sled is falling through the ground none stop and appears above you all the time.

I’m 90% sure they are starving, running along until they starve to death and or the player encounters them and kills them. The reason I think this is the case is because then the other cannibals will be seen eating each other, maybe resetting their starvation timer?

One thing i think would be worth testing is if the ai has some kind of sense of smell, or a kind of sense that tells them the general direction of where the player is. I’ve had numerous accounts where it’d seem mutations would follow me even though they couldn’t see me. And it was very unsettling seeing two armies and a big bloby thing coming straight for me even after I moved far out of their way.

you are really good at making these videos also, what are you supposed to do when you are playing on hard and constantly get swarmed by cannibals? i made a base in the fertile lands and have a dead fall base from your other video, we are constantly swarmed by cannibals now and it makes doing anything extremely difficult, even gathering sticks to feed the dead fall traps.

+King I have had situations like that. Its fun to begin with but it gets old quick. I recommend you start a base a new location, even a temporary base would suffice. OR, spend a few days away from the base. I like to go out farmings, build a house boat or raft and load it up with logs or other supplies. I do this on the other side of the map and make AS MUCH noise as possible. After a few days, my base is clear for 3 to 7 days. Gives you room to breath. Try it out and let me know how you go. Just make sure its a few days and be VERY LOUD. Draw their attention. Good luck and cheers.
