@@freebird127 The Dimplex heaters do provide a lot of heat very quickly, so you use them much less than standard baseboard heaters. For Comfort and Energy savings - Dimplex heaters are the best!

i'm building a small heated paint storage room in an unheated garage. Think of a space 4x8 x 9' tall with some shelves, and a door, insulated walls. I want to install a heater. Oil Filled electric space heaters run at 120 volts, consume up to 1500 watts, and put off a set amount of BTU's. There are also 4 foot electric base board heaters like you featured, that lack the thermal mass of the oil filled electric radiator style that come in 120 and 240 volts. I found your video as I searched for information on "higher voltages, consume lower amps, and are cheaper to run." But with electric heat, I got the impression that a watt of energy in, regardless of whether its 1 leg at 120 or 2 leg at 240, will produce the same BTU's. And instead of drawing 15 amps on one leg, I'd just be drawing 7.5 amps on two legs, and thus wind up with the same bill from the electric company at the end of the month, and I have to give up the thermal mass of the oil filled radiator if I go to 240. BUT, i have the sense i'm missing something. Can you go more into depth on how this works with AC voltage, and amperage, and how that relates to creating BTU's with electric heat, and the Kilowatt Hour Draw and expense? I love the geeky math stuff. Thanks!!

Hi Drew, Thank you for you question. With any electric heater, as I explained in the video, cost efficiency of the heater is directly related to how efficient it is to transferring the heat from the devise to the surrounding air, which the Dimplex heater excels at. I have used the oil filled heater and the old style baseboard heaters, both on 120V and 240V and the Dimplex style of Straight Throughput air flow, delivers the most heat per KW of electricity and not just by a bit but more than 40% compared to the other models. I live in a climate similar to you and use a 750 - 120VAC Dimplex in our bedroom, and it provides way more heat than we need and only costs about $40. I think that this would be more that enough for your needs unless your shed is in a Sub Artic climate. Thanks for watching and let me know how you choose to move ahead. For electric heaters they work very well. Here we don't have natural gas and oil is the only other alternative which is just out of this world in price. Plus all the electricity here is all generated by a hydro electric plant which is pollution free. I till live my wood stove as we have all the wood we could ever use.

installed mine today thanks for the help man!! got two 1250W as a test to replace the 750 in my room and the 750 in the downstairs that along with a 2500w heats most of my open concept place. wish I could do a more exact test. like see how long it takes to heat up the same area under identical circumstances. I may do that in the bedroom and time it to see how fast it can raise the temp 5 degrees Celsius. but also sot a perfect test as the old one is 750W and this new one is 1200W only downside is one of the wall mount screws easily stripped.its pretty firm against the wall but not super firm. and my fire alarm went off with its first use Not sure why people are complaining about it putting off high temperatures on the wall. the wall with the Dimplex is noticeably colder (due to the spacer) than it is above my convention U shaped old one.

Sound like you have done a good job! I forgot to say that you should wipe the dust out of them before you start them up as it will burn off and smell which more than likely was the cause of your fire alarm going off. Its also a good idea to wipe them out in the Fall before you use them for the first time after they have been sitting all summer as dust will settle in them.

you do not save money by using 240v vs 120v. You pay for electricity in kilowatt hours....watts are unchanged by voltage. The higher voltage reduces current - amps. A 2000 watt heater on 240v draws 8.3 amps. A 2000 watt heater on 120v draws 16.6 amps.....they both consume 2000 watts and put out the same amount of heat.

I'm thinking they could have a better way to line the supports up with a template possibly ,because I found it frustrating. I ended up doing what you did. I was replacing existing heaters that had inline wall thermostats mounted on the wall. The model I bough does not have an internal thermostat as it uses the wall thermostat. I am not sure on how to use the models with the internal thermostats. Sorry.

I am not sure but would think you must first disconnect and remove the original thermostat and bypass the wires going to it, BUT I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DOING IT. Really I would just replace the unit as they are very inexpensive to buy and quick to replace.

If you are installing a 240VAC heater into a 240VAC connection, both black and white wires are hot. Each one connects to one of the two wires on the heater but don't forget to connect the ground wire first.

Read the instructions! Non Flammable wall types are OK with a flush mount, but most walls will require the use of the spacer. The instructions are VERY CLEAR in this matter. Installed correctly they work Great!

Hi, Great video! Made me chuckle when you seemed so pleased about Patsy Cline...a classic! Did you use a single pole or double pole thermostat. A Dimplex customer service representative recommended the double pole, programmable thermostat for some reason. I'm not sure what the reasoning is. I already purchased the single pole thermostats, but they aren't installed yet. The programmable, double pole thermostats are expensive...double the cost of the turn dial ones. Are they really necessary? What do you have for thermostats? Thanks, so much! :-)

Sounds like you need to test which wires are hot. You should only need 2 wires and a ground.

The Dimplex heater only needs the black and red wires plus the ground wire. I think the white wire if for when you are doing a 120/240vac install such as a stove. But please check with a local electrician to be sure as electrical codes are different in many areas.

Norman great video!! I also got the 750W only mine has a built in thermostat. I emailed and asked them if this model works with 120V 12G wire. They said it did but the instructions say 240/208. Would the one you installed work with 120V 12G wire?

Mine is 240/208V only. They make a 120V model though. My unit is for use with an inline wall thermostat which uses the 240v line voltage because I was replacing an existing old style heater. The heaters with a built in thermostat are wired very differently and if you wire them up like I did this model, the thermostat wires will fry.

I am installing one of these units and the you tube is really helpful, however, I need better instructions to remove the center cover. I undid the end cover by removing the screw, but I am afraid that I may damage the center cover. You didn't cover that step, you just showed it with the cover off. The instructions say that it seperates from the top first, but I don't know how to lift it from the top. Can you help? I have everything else under control. thank you Julie Ford

The cover hangs on clips on the top and bottom. Just pull the cover up a bit and it will slide off the clips. To replace the cover slide the bottom on first and push the top over the clips. You won't break it as it needs a bit of force to get it off and on. Hope this helps and enjoy your new heater.

Use the left side as a utility box, and RUN CABLE, THROUGH the BUILT-IN CHANEL, ON THE BACK OF THE UNIT TO THE RITH SUDE; WITH OUT HAVING TO CUT YOUR WALL.

Yes, their instructions are less than useful which is why I did the video. When connected properly, it does an amazing job heating your home, I think it does the best of any of any baseboard heaters on the market out there, by far!

If you have the same unit as I do, the left and right side are the same. If you have the model with the built in thermostat, the wiring on the left and right side are totally different and I don't know much about those units.

Hey Norman, Have a question...and Dimplex is no help (waiting a week for reply so far). I have a Linear Proportional wired upa nd working justfine. I now want to add a Linear Convector model (no on board thermostat) further along the wall, extending the circuit.... the Linear Proportional (on board thermostat) controls both units . Can't find how to wire the two heaters anywhere Can you help ??? I'm thinking to splice second heater L1 to the yellow black wire on Linear Porportional, L2 to the blue/black/white connection. Your advice ??

Tho not an electrician, and haven't "tested" it with a resistance meter or other tester, so far it works perfect and I have two heaters on one run now.

Hay Dale, I originally installed the unit with a built in thermostat. I wired it incorrectly and it worked for a couple of weeks during short use in fall season. Then one day it got cold and I use it for a few hours and then , I saw smoke coming out of the unit and the wires inside to the thermostat fried to bits. The main wires to the unit also fried and if I had not been holme at the time the result might have been very bad. I replaced the unit with this one and it works perfect. Dimplix does have electrical wiring specs on their site for all their units. I encourage you to look at them for safe use or your heater as they do put out a lot of heat.

Great video! I just bought one of these too, but I'm confused on the wiring. The instructions indicate that you should wire the other side and separate the blue and black wire and addi in the neutral, and then wire the hot to the free black wire. Did yours not have those directions?

So my wiring was strictly for power to the onboard thermostat. Then I used bluetooth to connect to the wireless controller. Is that what you wanted to know?

First I will tell you, I learned the hard way!!!!! The heaters WITH a thermostat built into the unit, ARE NOT CAMPATABLE if you have an inline wall Thermostat. YOU WILL FRY YOUR WIRING AND RISK BURINING DOWN YOUR HOME!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE READ and follow the direction that come with the heater you select for a safe install. My video is for the Dimplex heaters that are compatible with an inline thermostat. PS - I fried the original heater version I bought with the onboard thermostat along with the wiring back to the mains panel and cost me a major fix because I bought the wrong heater and thought it would work. Make sure you know what you have before you buy and install any unit you buy!!!!!

They have 2 different models. One works with an existing wall thermostat that is wired inline with the heater, a great replacement choice for replacing an existing wall heater and then they have a model that has its own built in thermostat that you can also control from a Bluetooth app on your smart phone. They are a bit more pricey to buy but you don't need it install a wired in thermostat.

Sounds like you have a different make of heater. The Dimplex heaters have only 2 types I outlined. Find the manufactures tag and go to their website for their setup instructions.

Hay Mike. The thermostat runs off of 120vac and needs to be separated from the 240vac by adding a neutral wire. Follow the instructions carefully or you will fry the wiring.

It's A shame that the person that I spoke in the phone from DIMPLEX, didn't know, that this wS posible, I was going to RETURN the Unit to buy the one with OUT the on board termostat for $56.00 as per $114.99 Anyway, I just wanted to share that YES ... it's posible to have the unit controlled either from the wall termostat, on board termostat or Wi-Fi. I boought several of the PCM series heater for rooms without a wall mounted thermostat. The thermostats no longer work on 3 of the units. No heat, but they have power. There are no replacement parts listed on the Dimplex web site, as well as no trouble shooting guide. I have been waiting 20 minutres on their support line. I fear I will have to replace the entire units, and cant imagine how expenive their proprietory thermostat would be, if they even have one. The fact the thermostats are gone is not uncommon after a recent web search. The units get a terrible review on the dimplex web site. I searched google for thermostat for this unit, and nothing. Nothing! On Google! If I knew I could install a third party thermostat, then I'd do that, but no way to find out.

Wow! Sounds like you have had some really bad issues! Are you sure you ordered the correct voltage models as there are both 120volt and 240volt models of the same size and output configurations. If you run a 120volt model on 240volt it will fry the electronics for sure.

@@NormanMcGregor they worked for 4-5 years then failed. I have power, but thermostat does not regulate heat. On an separate unit, the LCD is dead. Junk!

There are small hooks top and bottom of the cover. Gently pull on the top edge and it will pop off.

Its really important to select the right model as there is a big difference if you are replacing an existing heater or installing it as a new heater. If you are replacing an existing heater with an inline thermostat, just wire it the same as the old one the same as I did in my video. If it is a new install of a heater, you need the heater model with a built-in thermostat and the wiring specifications is very well explained on their web site.

@@NormanMcGregor Following the wirering instructions, my DOES NOT Work. Question: Please correct me if I'm wrong. My problem is that I have a smart Dimplex termostat on the wall, replacing the old termostat, and with the wirering configuration provided by the manufacture (Dimplex) it DIES NOT WORK with a different configuration, it does work ONLY the wall termostat, BUT the ON BOARD TERMOSTAT. Aren't supposed to work both of them??

@@djkjrene Not sure what your problem is. The Smart thermostat is a very separate devise that connects to the heater through wireless Blue Tooth. Have you set up the connection correctly??

@@NormanMcGregor No norman , the on board termostat is wired and it can control manually from the unit and wifi as well, Same with the wall termostat (SPT-240) it's also hard wired, but can also control via Wi-Fi. My it's working like a charm now.

You pay a premium for those little LCD themostats on these heaters. When your thermostat goes in one of them, good luck finding a replacement. I bought about 16 of these things for a duplex I renovated. 2 of them have failed after 5 years. That is a 15% fail rate. I'd fix them myself, but you can't buy the replacement thermostat anywhere. Take a look at the Dimplex parts catalog online. Is a joke. You can search it, but there are no pictures of any of the parts they list. I am now basically forced to go buy a standard baseboard heater, plus a thermostat, to replace these units. I would not recommend. Considering there is little that can possibly go wrong with a solid baseboard heater, to have 2 fail on me is a joke. Stay well clear. 10 year warranty on element, and 1 year on the crappy thermstat. When the latter fails, who cares how long the element lasts?

The ones I got have no electronics in them. They use an existing simple wall thermostat to control the heat. Watch the whole video and you will see.

It's true,Dimplex has pretty poor customer service,I installed a unit in a Condo I own and my tenant lost one of the metal, end cover plates(how he lost it I don't know). I called Dimplex for a replacement-they wanted about $25 for that little piece of metal(including shipping). The entire unit was only about $50. They were very unfriendly over the phone.
