Throughout modern history, global economic growth has been based on countries and industries having access to reliable, relatively cheap energy. But energy security can easily be threatened. In 2022, a slew of crises have converged to raise serious questions about this most critical of topics. The aftermath of the pandemic, raging global conflict, geopolitical rivalries and the worsening climate crisis have raised a decisive question for the planet: can it continue to power itself without deepening inequality?

14:58 Renewable energy requires fossil fuels to install and to mine rare earths and other minerals. The market will price out the poor and let the rich waste fuel in anything they see fit. We need to save it for the most urgent needs in agriculture, mining and transport globally.

After spending the last 6+ years in the renewable energy industry, I think we are still a LONG way from solar and wind being viable solutions for a significant part of the world's energy needs. And the push to "electrify everything" is only going to exacerbate that. As several experts note in this video, we are facing a transition period, and it's not going to be a quick one. I do believe that wind and solar will continue to comprise a part of the energy mix in the future, and that that % will gradually increase, but I don't think that it will ever be our entire energy mix in our lifetimes. The people who espouse, "we just all need to switch to solar and wind and buy electric cars" are generally very naive about how this all works, and about the enormity of the world's energy needs.
@brynphillips9957
@brynphillips9957 Жыл бұрын
The problem is, if we wanted a slow transition, we needed to have started 20 years ago. The science is pretty set. If we want to avoid catastrophic climate change, with an emphesis on the catastrophic, we need to transtion away from greenhouse gas producing energy sources and technologies and we need to do it rapidly. If we fail, energy security and economic prosperity will be the least of our problems. Basic food and water will become a critical issue along with managing the constant impacts of severe weather. In sort, we don't really have the luxury of choice on weither we transition or not.

What did you do in the renewable energy industry?
@bsmithhammer
@bsmithhammer Жыл бұрын
@@brynphillips9957 That's exactly my point - it's not about what we 'want' to do, it's about the technological limitations of solar and wind, and their ability to address the totality of our energy needs. Now, if we add lots of hydro, nuclear and a few other non-carbon emitting (or less carbon-emitting) things in to the mix, we may get there. But on solar + wind alone? Ain't gonna happen.

I cannot think like a lower qualified citizen, however I think outside the box all the time and therefore will never confine myself in the way that a lot of people do. Energy insecurity is now a REAL problem for all of Europe and much of Asia, as well as many other nations that are seeing a "shortfall" of meeting its energy needs, plus its rising cost. The world is now seeing more and more instability as it has never seen (such as the women protests in Iran, the Stop the Oil protests in Britain), but which the political nations are often at a loss as to what EXACTLY to do, how to "right the ship", turn it around. But what if an unlimited supply of energy could be found, would that help ? Yes, but there is a catch, for this unlimited supply of energy will be given only to those are obedient to its owner, God, whose name is Jehovah.(see Isa 12:2, KJV) There is another problem, and that is, there is not just a need for energy that humans consume, such as electricity, petroleum, etc, but also a need to remove that which causes us to lose our "energy", sin, that eventually brings on death. So, what if a person could have a stable supply of both energies, for personal use in, say a home for heating and cooling and cooking, a shop for machines, while also for us "personally", whereby all forms of "energy NEVER runs out, but last forever, because sin has been eliminated ? Well, this will be reality under a heavenly government called God's Kingdom (Matt 6:10), for at Isaiah 40:26, of Jehovah God, it says: "Lift up your eyes to heaven and see (the unnumbered stars). Who has created these things ? It is the One who brings out their army by number; He calls them all by name. Because of his vast dynamic energy and his awe-inspiring power, not one of them is missing."

Mismanagement of crucial infrastructure. Once upon a time telecommunications, road building, gas supplies were under the control of the governments. Yes, we all looked and said they are leaning on shovels , and taking too long, and wasting time. So governments sold these areas of business off to capital investment firms to collect monies. They spent that money on growing the size of government and paying themselves salary increases. The loss was apprenticeships , employment and the ability to co ordinate, and know a one direction. Capital investment firms don't invest in the infrastructure , they bleed it dry to make more money They get contractors, who then get more contractors. The contractor who tendered and now realises that they will lose money stops work, or docent pay, meaning those below him go broke. Therefore cost over runs, time line extensions, and who pays.....The government via the peoples taxes. Big mistake getting rid of government employees based in critical services
