Really enjoying this series on filmic and sigmoid - thanks :) Can I take away that Lightroom also seems to be working scene referred?

That will remain a trade secret I'm afraid but I think it is safe to say that the engineers at Adobe are top class and that LR uses some of its adjustments in scene-referred mode!

The Basic panel seems to be at least partly scene-referred, but not fully. Everything else seems to be display-referred. In the "Lightroom Basic module equivalents" discussion over on Pixls, Bastibe explains his understanding of how it works, but ultimately only Adobe knows exactly.

So that’s why Mr. AP said to set the middle gray value first. Guess I better stop going back and re-adjusting the exposure.

If you readjust exposure, I recommend that you readjust filmic too.

Filmic, Sigmoid and Color Balance RGB all rely on middle grey having been set with exposure, since they use it as the fulcrum around which they perform their adjustments.
