Had I watched the drama a few years back, I would’ve despised the ending, because their love didn’t last till the end. But now I understood that there is no important love more than self-love, and that’s exactly what Jini picked, not fame, nor her lover. Her art symbolised herself, to give up art means to lose herself. Even when she ran away with Minister Kim, she kept thinking about her dance and music, feeling afraid that she would lose them forever. This already forecasting her desire to do art overwhelmingly exceeded her desire of love, though she sometimes felt at ease with her lover. She felt trapped while being an artist, so she thought love was her salvation. But the real cage she wanted to get away from was not her art, but the title of a gisaeng. So at the end, when she realised that, she chose to live as a free artist, without silk garments and gold ornaments. Hence why, even without love, the story ends with her happily dancing, and smiling, similar back to when she was the innocent temple girl, dancing only in old ragged clothes.

Thanks for putting it altogether...most of the viewers that were not satisfied were just focusing on the love stories....they forgot that she chose to became gisaeng for the love of art from the very start....she wanted to express arts as widely an far as she can without restrictions

I understand it all but the king let the couple live together as they wished. If she had recovered her physical talent, and doesn't want rich stuffs and Kim was becoming the leader professor of the village, she was dumb yes she was. They could still be doing the thing they love and keep together, or just after some time losing the love between each other, they still could do the stuffs they like but just without luxuries.

@@yin_xing Yes I totally agree with your thoughts about the story line,for me it is purely NARCISIST to her FINEST,she has no contentment in LIFE she cannot get satisfied for anything,when the king offers her a normal loving life with a person that truly care even offers his own life to sacrifice for her but what she did,she refuse the Kings offer after all the great sacrifices even make the angel inside her womb into one of her Victims,she refuse again the offer of the father of the angel,thus only shows how cold hearted she is she the main reasons why main characters suffers and dies,but she doesn't VALUE any of THE SACRIFICES SHE THE REAL MEANING OF A GREEDY HUMAN

2018년인데 지금 다시봐도 엔딩까지 완벽한 좋은 드라마. 배우분들 연기도 모두 훌륭해서 황진이하면 앞으로도 하지원밖에 생각안날거같고 고 김영애 선생님 훌륭한 연기도 다시 볼수있어서 좋았어요. 2007년작인데 보기드물게 완벽한 여주 원톱이고 다른 드라마들처럼 사랑이나 다른이의 힘도 기대지않고 끝까지 자기의 길을 가는게 정말 멋있음.

ayoon song 작품내내 가장 핵심적인 인물이 김영애였고 인상깊은 장면은 그의 죽음 이었죠. 정말 가슴 아프고 눈물이 나 통곡할 지경이, 현실에는 김영애가 없다는것에 통탄하며 , 그가 살아있는 동안에는 드라마보담 더욱 통탄하고 비통한 삶이었다는것이 어우러져 슬픔을 금할수가 없었어요. 그의 병은 자연 치유로 얼마든지 치유가 되는것을 , 병원에서 치료가 안되어 생을 그렇게 이쉽게 빨리 마감시킨것에 분노합니다. 아까운 사람이었음을...

I was a dancer. from 4 y.o. until near 40's. (10 years ago) I performed a lot in parties, festivals, beneficial events and special occasions. Not only here my country but also in Japan and in Germany. And, I could relate somehow on few events of this telenovela... A TRUE Artist(s) could somehow hide their pains behind the smiles on the stage during performance. After the performance, with a loud of applause, standing ovation, with smiles and/or amazement from the audience,, that pain behind the smile of the artist, somehow, subsides. I just enjoy DANCING... Booyong deserves the post of being the head mistress. Her humility of going out of her way and asking for other teachers to teach her and ability to acknowledge defeat paved the way for her to become the troupe leader. Jini may not have gotten the post but it cannot be denied the fact that her skills moved the orchestra and other artists at the competition. It proved that she deserves the title the greatest artist of the nation.

헐 악기 줄 다 끊어버린 거 너무.... 너무 가슴 아프다... 저렇게 표현하다니..ㅜㅜ 와 진짜... 첨부터 끝까지 짜임새도 있고 긴장감도 넘친다.. 끝까지.. 보통 드라마는 남녀 주인공 연애 반대하다가 잘 되면 긴장 끊겨서 마지막회는 심심하고 그냥 안 봐도 무방해서 잘 안 보게 되는데... 와.. 끝까지.. 마지막 화담 선생과 대화도 너무 멋있다...

When I went to KBS World channel, I never expected to watch this drama. I just came to look for fun, but soon as I saw Ha Jiwon on the thumbnail in traditional clothe, I clicked it right away. IF ever there's a second part, thinks Hwang Jini can join her common-law husband w/ noble blood, because she has left as "Gisaeng Troupe Dance" as soon as her mother died. A good teacher opened her well-being how 2 become a great artist, happy dancing w/ people by making them laugh/smiling together w/ her. All her life, she was strong enough enduring all trials, persecutions 2 the extent by rejecting the King's Edict, because they've go far away where people could not find them is difficult 2 do so, as if you're a fugitive. Thank you much KBS WORLD by producing such wonderfully great Ancient drama series w/ clear screen video; and, an addition of English subtitle where viewers much delightfully enjoyed understanding conversations taken over. Casts you've chosen are well done, knows their roles very well. In reality, does these women still exist practicing these talents 2 this towns presently? Or they're mentioned in other names. W..e..l..l.., anyway, you've done a great job!

Just finished watching the entire series and looked up the life of Hwang Jin Yi online. According to one research, she lived up to 40 years old, and she was buried in Kaesong, her birthplace. Both Kaesong and the capital city Pyongyang are in North Korea. It was said that during her years as a kisaeng, she would always show up to balls and festivals barefaced, without makeup, as she felt hiding behind a painted face would limit her self expression. She have a great voice, as found in the record's that said she got the finest voice in the entire village, though it's not highlighted in the series. She's more shown in the series for playing music, writing soji style poetry and dancing (the third one I can't find proof online, but the first two were her forte). She must have been an incredible woman to have lived during that difficult period, given the fact that class divide was highly observed due to Confuciunism, and kisaengs were part of a lower class, just above thieves and robbers. Their main job is to entertain. Though her father was of the yangban class, her noble status was not recognized. This series probably may not capture the real life events of Hwang Jin Yi's life, just as Empress Ki may not be an accurate retelling of Lady Gee's life. This series dragged on too much on her first love who died from heartbreak, 9 episodes in all, and it bled into the next few episodes. The competitiveness in the kisaeng world holds a lot of truth, and the injustice and cruelty of the yangban towards the lower class was shown, I'd say it's a pretty good series. Great actors, and costumes, too. Thank you, KBS!

most of the times, people appreciates the artist more than the art. sometimes it doesn't matter the simple mistake so long as the people love the artist. Like brands. people are willing to pay more money on the name of the brand than the quality. it doesn't matter if it's ripped jeans or trashy as long as it was from a well known brand.

No doubt a masterpiece... explains so much about the Joseon era. A kind hearted king, a loyal troupe leader, a warm hearted noble man , an obedient bodyguard and so many contributed to make Jini a finest artist. At the end she leaves everything behind and learns to love and respect her art. It's interesting that she becomes so spritual and acted like a Buddhist monk at the end that she just concentrated on how to make herself calm and composed so that she can spread the happiness to outside world.

I truly enjoyed the depth of it Santa reflected all human beings but to take her away from that culture the sense of family and it's important that's so missing in other programs that I've seen it's refreshing to see that and something that's current is one of the best dramas I've ever seen in my life kudos

When I started watching at first, I thought well it's the same old story like in other movies. Well I was proved wrong as every episode has you wanting for more, I'm especially pleased with the twist and turns of the story. You could never really predicts what's happening next. A lesson I learnt from this is that despite each characters failures or success, each character was honest about their thoughts and was ready to confess their defeat if any. Short but inspiring movie.

Amazing drama... extremely good acting skills.... I had my doubts on this drama from the beginning up to the middle part because it kept dragging on.... however from the middle to the end it became very very interesting.i love this drama...it is part of my top 5 Korean historical dramas. Storyline was great... great work.

The part where Jini danced with the commoner reminds me of the scene where Junghan was happy singing and dancing with the workers. She could still be a great artist even she chose to live with her husband.

It was not legal to do that for both of them, that is why the King said he was going to pretend that they are dead, so She chose being an artist because she knew it would be hard for both of them to live peacefully and the same time without being able to live their own dreams, he would nothave been able to help people and she would not have been able to dance and live like an artist.

February,19th,2018 KBS you have a classic in Hwang Jin Yi ! This masterpiece will stand the test of time. It was produced in 2006.I saw it for the first time in 2012/01/09 on tv. I watched it again two more times and today it will make the fourth time. Very true...and every time I watched it I alwaysdiscover something new deeper and broader meaning to a scene or dialogues between the characters. The first time I watched this series I hate hwang jinyi the same as others who hate her because she's cold etc ..the second and third time I begun to understand her and appreciate the classic acting...the regal costumes ...the beautiful cinematography and the superb screen depiction of a legendary korean
