Since an Igorot was featured in this video and not a lot of people know about us, I'll leave some fun facts here. Igorots are tribes/ethnic groups from the Cordilleran Region in Luzon. The lady in the video is actually wearing native attire (in my dialect, we call it "la-uy") but the terms for native attires differs because we have different languages per tribe. Igorots are sort of like clans and descendants from warrior-like people; we have a lot of folklore about our ancestors and mythology that's been passed down for generations. Thank you for reading! I went to SK for vacation 4 years ago, and my tour guide was surprised that I'm indonesian. She said that I didn't look like any typical south-east asian, and she described it as 'outdoor workers' like short height (female can't be more than 155 cm, male can't be more than 170 cm), tan skin, wide face, flat nose, wide lips, curvy body, slightly curly hair, and for male usually have a lot of facial or body hair. And she got the nerve to show the picture of our woman hero, Kartini and people in 30-40's era to steorotyped our looks. That was just so disrespectful 'cuz she indirectly called kartini's looks is 'low'. When I show her how our people are diversity and it's no longer under 50's era, she got culture shock when she looked at the pictures of our people. My friend who had student exchange also experienced racism, the korean student who supposed as her tour guide talked behind her back, thought my friend didn't understand what they talked about.. but she knew a bit how they talked about her looks and described her as 'slave' look or 'monkey' I know it's just several people and shouldn't be used to generalize all of SK people. There are plenty kind korean as well. But yeah, just for a note that some people in SK still have those kind of thought about us. I mean, months ago there are several beef we had with them in social media as well.

Although the average Indonesian does not have a sharp nose, they do have beautiful double eyelid lines, which Koreans always want when going to a surgeon. Besides that, Indonesians have various skin colors, but we never make a fuss or make fun of each other. Unlike most Koreans, when they see their friends who have tan skin, they seem to ask 'are you really Korean?' 'You don't look like a Korean.' and it hurts the person's feelings. Seventeen Mingyu is one of those people who has a little concern, he was not confident with his skin color in the past, because before he became very famous he was often said to have tan skin. But when he has a lot of overseas fans, he receives a lot of compliments for his skin. And now even professional people say that Mingyu has good skin, and is charming.

To represent this video from a Korean point of view, this boy and girl expressed a reaction that was unfamiliar to the Korean American style. She didn't even mention the color of her skin. The nuance I feel as a Korean is just that. But I wonder why the comments are all about skin color. Each country has a different culture, so the reception of each word may be different, but they speak too harshly to children who have a crush on a race they have not seen often, based on their own subjective interpretation. They're teenagers.. pretty standard level of ignorance if you ask me... Bring in any group of teenagers and ask them how many countries they visited? How many different people from around the world they interacted with? Pretty sure most kids their age wouldn't have travelled overseas without their parents supervision unless on a school trip.
@syemahoque10542 жыл бұрын
@@Nekon3k0 I'm a teenager too, but this isn't about me. And it's not about travelling oversees either. It's the recurring theme of them acting shocked when Asians didn't have fair skin and the typical features of EAST Asians, and like many people in the comment section have said before, they were being disrespectful. Even if the way their wording wasn't blatantly racist, it was subtly discriminatory - from the very first tiktok they reacted to, saying "Is she really Asian?" the same disbeliving tone is carried out through out the video which is racist. I shouldn't have to explain why it's racist to not be able to believe that non-Korean/non-Japanese/non-Chinese Asians can be attractive. Also, questioning if they are really Asian if they aren't from those three countries is so weird. That is a microaggression. if you don't know what that is, here is a definition so you can educate yourself: microaggression - a statement, action, or incident regarded as an instance of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group such as a racial or ethnic minority; if you know what it is then you should've been able to pick up the microaggressive comments they kept making, right? As a Bengladeshi, I am Asian, but how many people would say I'm Asian? Not very many. Because people refuse to acknowledge that Asians are not limited Korean, Japanese and Chinese people. Obviously this is uncomfortable to other Asians, and I am dissappointed that you believe it's excusable. Yes, they may not have travelled much but this is far wasn't the point, they are saying things that are offensive to at least half of Asia. Even if they didn't outright say it, it was deeply uncomfortable when they were also constantly assuming the 'pretty girls' (by their standard) to be strictly Korean, Japanese or Chinese. Let's say I give them the benfit if the doubt, and their meaning got lost in translation, they were still reacting disrespectfully. You can see their disbelief in their *facial expressions*. Even their body language... this is really not it. Also, going back to the 'travelling' -- this is total bs. The world is more connected than ever before. Not only does social media expose you to different people and cultures, but as well as the media industry in general. Movies made in other countries, they would still have access to that. It is their job to get educated and be mindful of the words they use. It's common human decency. It is their job. I am not responsible for what they say and think, neither is anyone else; i hoped they could learn from this experience, but apparently not if they reuploaded this video after all the backlash. They should have apologised and deleted the video instead of cutting out the parts that are 'worse' (it's all equally as bad, racism is still racism when it's sugar-coated). I know Korea has a deep-rooted history of racism, but things need to change. One person at a time the world can become better. I hope you can understand. Thank you.

When they said they would be able to identify every Asian ethnicity, we all laughed. Don’t deny it, anyone who’s tried to identify ethnicity knows it’s hard. Even if you say you are kinda able to distinguish the most common features from the most well known asian countries, you’re still gonna get it wrong several times before you get it right. I’ve tried and failed equally as badly as the teens in the video. It’s hard especially since one may not know of all the ethnic groups in the continent not to mention what trait and features they tend to have. They got so surprised when a Indian guy had blue/green eyes and doubted that a girl from Sri Lanka was asian so likely they weren’t quite ready for how different ethnic groups within the asian continent tend to look compared to each other. Also there’s the added confusion of mixed blood, I recognized a least one of the people from the mixed blood challenge. The second we start mixing different nationalities features together it’s gonna get a thousand times harder to distinguish ethnicity based only on appearance. A little European splash here and a little American there and all bets are off.

They seem to be only really know Korean, japanese and Chinese people I guess because it's there neighbor countries (no offense) i hope that in the future that the World is more informed and cultured, but I guess it's just natural Human first judgement about other races and cultur having stereotypes and stigmas

They’re so stereotypical and uneducated when it comes to other Asians, no it’s not just Japanese, Chinese, and Korean OMG. Like they we’re like “she’s Asian?” like cmon educate yourself.
