Tips for international fans: Northern part of Thailand used to be independent state from the central part Thai. In the past, Nuer or Lanna (northern language/dialect) had many differences from Thai in alphabetical, grammar and vocabularies. Not many people know how to write the alphabet anymore these days, but the speaking part still remain in the locals. In the series, Karma's house had those Lanna alphabet on his house wall, and Tor Fun also has the letter in her notebook. Since the two countries has merged for a long time, Nuer people understand central Thai language through schoolings and also we develop the same vocabularies for modern words. Growing as a bicultural Thai, the tone and vocabularies are the most differences between Thai and Nuer. In fact, Nuer itself has many tone depends on which provinces you live in. Basically, Nuer people can predict by listening to the tone and dielects which province in the Northern part of Thailand you are from.

It’s somewhat similar, but people in other parts of Thailand will fully understand the northern dialect. That’s why the subtitles are used.

Even though I'm still in the beginning of learning Thai as soon as Yod spoke with Tian in the first two episodes, I knew he was speaking a dialect. The way of speaking and tone was different and they put thai subtitles on each episode. I was waiting for someone to mention it in series or in behind the scenes. Beautiful~

I'm living in Chiang Rai (where the setting located) You know what..... I speak dialect but I can understand the Dialect only 80%........ Northern people speak dialect....but when travel cross the city some words have different pronunciation..... Ex Water Chiang Rai - Nam (short) Chaing Mai - Naaaaaaaaam (long) OR some sentences have different meaning Ex I am home.... Chiang Rai - Yuu (tee) Baan Chiang Mai - Me Baan......... (actually it means I have a house for Chaing Rai people)

Actually it is a language. The difference of a language to a dialect is if you don't understand who you are talking, you have different language. But if you just don't understand some term, you have different dialect in your own language. Language is a language itself, while dialect is a root of a language.

imagine something like English and Scottish accents but with appox 30 % difference in vocabulary. The Northern dialect sounds softer, central is more vocal and harsh I guess :) During the show, try to listen to parts where they show Thai subtitle, that's when they use the Northern dialect :)

As a Filipino, i can't figure out the difference in terms of the words 'coz i can't speak Thai but i can separate them in terms of how they pronounce it and the intonation itself just like here in my country, i'm from the North and i encounter a lot of people when i move to Metro but there are things that i can identify who my fellows are, it is by dialect and accent...
