​Phi and Nong titles do directly translate as "Older (sister/brother)" and "Younger" but it isn't restricted to familial. In Thai culture and similar cultures, a lot of people are even referred to as aunts, uncles, grandmas, etc. without being related. Phi is a term of respect and seniority, but still closer than the respect you would give, say, your boss. If you ever see translations come out as "sister" or "brother", you can usually take it to mean they are close but not considering each other as direct family, unless they say so. Hope this helps!
