i think he means he doesn't get the roles he wants; like he isn't casted into an anime that he actually takes the time to decide to audition in. but as far as we see from his records, he's almost always the main lead. so most of his roles were probably pre-determined by the staff ie he was the first choice to be recruited even before they started the audition sessions. in short, this dude's too humble to admit he's always at the priority list of seiyuus for any anime that comes out 🤭

He is a sidekick and side character a lot of times as well. He plays more number of side characters( although important) than main leads. He has the voice of thay naughty kid in middle school so he gets that role as well a lot

I guess there is a dozen of top young-sounding voice actors that share between themselves like 80% of all major anime roles every year. So they lose to each other 95% of the time, but still everybody has lots of roles to play. :)

When I first got into anime i unconsciously established a favorite anime characters list. At that time i had no idea about seiyuus and i couldnt really tell them apart either. I later on found out that 90% of my favs were voiced by kaji yuki, i swear its his voice that gets me

Normally when auditioning for voice acting there are these characters that you get to choose from and decide which character to audition and prepare for. Normally when you get rejected for a role the directors choose to cast you in a different character so maybe that's what Yuki kaji means when he says he fails auditions.
