Maybe for Chinese people she doesn't have the typical idealistic beauty standards. AN ACTRESS LIKE Bai Lu is so beautiful and recognized as such both nationally and internationally so I think if Esther is pretty to you in her country she doesn't have the ideal looks... I also find that she's someone who kinda relies on jokes a lot in her roles, comedic timing. Actors like that often got rejected for their looks...
