I just think that this video is the final proof that KagePro is a story told in multimedia. This video just made it really easy to understand that the novels, PV's and mangas are different storylines and this time Shintarou just remembered them all. The anime isn't an adaptation, but a sequel.

It wasn't intended that way, though. If you watched the official website of Mekakucity, they named the last episode Outer Science and intended to make another bad ending. About 4 weeks before airing final episode, they changed the name of the episode to Summertime Record. Fans were talking about it a lot. That it was probably because they didn't allow another season so they had to wrap it up.

Shintaro's snake is called the Snake of Burning into the Eyes, basically he has all his memories from all the past timelines/dead ends, and he remembers everything in every cycle, which is also why he recalls being a fetus (when he wasn't even born yet), as well as what happened in manga etc.

Let me get this straight, all of you: IT'S ALL A FLASHBACK. THE NOVEL, MANGA, PVs...ESPECIALLY THE MARRY AND SHINTARO SCENE IN THE END -1st route/s is Route XX or the Bad End: Outer Science and Marry resets time. This route happens all over again, until Shintaro finally gets his eye power or until Route 1 happens -Next route/s is Route 1 or Lost Time Memory, the day when Ayano gives Shintaro the eye power...and then time resets again, for Shintaro to fix or change things which takes us to the "Final Route"... -Final route(?) is THE FREAKING ANIME. Or should I say....THE GOOD END: SUMMER TIME RECORD. THIS IS THE REASON WHY THERE IS NO OUTER SCIENCE EPISODE. AND SUMMER TIME RECORD IS THE 12TH AND FINAL EPISODE. When Marry reset time, Shintaro died and went to the void, due to Kuroha. When Marry took over as Queen, she wanted him to never forget the day, so he had been reborn with retaining eyes. Using the fundamentals of time travel, he was technically the first and last one to receive an ability.

***** I'll give the manga a try. The other complaint I have is the style that it's done in, it seems too similar to the Monogatari series (nothing against them, it's actually my favorite series). And I know that Shaft can do different things. You can easily tell apart the styles of the Monogatari series and of Maria Holic. Those things aside, Mekaku City Actors is still great, and it's one of my favorite of the season.

I didn't care for the vocaloids myself, but there were some fantastic covers made by people, and the story itself is why I got into all this. It's one of the only anime-type-things that I've looked into out of interest for better understanding, Jin really out-did himself with the story!

That's not likely, because he did think about her a lot. He probably did say her name a lot at first, before he sort of buried those old memories. His power did awaken when he said Ayano's name though.

I remember crying watching it for the first time in anime format. I loved KagePro so much back then I kept re-watching the short character teasers and PVs all day till it was airing. And god I was not disappointed. People blamed Shaft and Jin's questionable script but I really enjoyed the 'true end' kind of adaptation and I think the direction and visual truly fit the series. (I bet Jin was a fan of Bakemonogatari)

WARNING. THIS CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR STUFF I feel like this was the breaking point of where the whole idea of the story of kagepro. This is purely opinion, but the events of the pv and the events of the anime's pv are polar opposites, in regards to the relationship between ayano and shintaro. As one YTer previously commented, it did kind of make it seem like it was a means of sub shipping. I know they said the events in the anime were gonna be different from its previous mediums, but the events of the anime distroyed the whole idea of moving on. In some of the perspectives of the other characters, the idea of moving on was very much disintegrated in the anime. The official pv of lost time memory very intricately displayed the events of shintaro in route 1 and route x. The shintaro in route one moved on despite him blaming himself for ayano's death, while route x kept dwelling on the past. They show both deaths where the events ensue. And both are confronted with azami and ayano. The route x shintaro, still stuck in the past, didn't really grasped the idea of the way he was facing ayano at that moment, where as route 1 shintaro knew this would be the absolute last time he would see ayano again, so he confronted her. When ayano saw him and how he had changed, it made her happy. And that is how he gained his power. Pretty much, the reason I explained these events was cuz this song was a resolution of a sorts. Ayano apologies for her death because she was trying to resolve the words left unsaid, which implies that she wanted him to understand and not burden himself with the past. The smile of shintaro implies that he understood her intentions and he grew from the events between them. In stark contrast, the events of the pv, very much show a different set of events. Im not gonna explain that, bc its up there, but I will explain the way it totally tarnishes the idea of moving on. First off, its past events being shown, according to the last epidode, shown through implied situations. Second of all, when they rehashed the bits and pieces of the pv, it showed the confrontation of ayano and shintaro, and shintaro acted the same way as route x shintaro. The events followed, and these events were very much like the ones portrayed in route x. Its as if the anime's intent was not hold its theme of acceptance and progression, but to give us a sense of hope, through the recalling of these events, so that somehow shintaro could change there fate. But it was eerie, and it was out of place. It was vague. There are other portraits of a sense of hope were hinted out throughout the anime by other characters too. Like the way that kido as well as the others kept assuring hibiya that there was a way of saving hiyori. It was never explained how, in fact they didn't know how it was gonna happen, but it did, and it was a cop out the way it happenedtnat konoha had used himself and kuroha as a way of "saving" hiyori, or atleast through the implied events. While through the recital song by momo, it showed that hibiya accepted hiyori's death. There were some good points to this anime, or at least it seems so. They explained the reason for the experiments done by ayano's father, and the time loops done by Mary. This part was actually relevant bc the manga hinted this out too. Butthe ending of the anime was just.... too much of a cop out. Its one thing that they all save the day through whatever means they could, but it was kind of a "LOVE WILL SAVE THE DAY" mantra and a "IF WE ALL BELIEVE IN OURSELVES, THINGS WILL BE SUPER GREAT" kind of ending. In the ending, ayano was brought back through shintaro, by a bull crap means, and they save the day bc "ayano and her feelings made everything happy!" She survived, and hiyori came back and they all stayed friends. And that frankly was a load of crap. The idea that the story as a whole implied the concept of moving on. And for most of the long time fans, that concept was heavily implied in summer time record. The whole idea of that song was the memories of there days being kept alive through haruka, after all that was said and done, bc the rest of them forgot about all that happened. That same ending song was played in the credits as they showed background scenes. Now like I said, this is a change in events, and thats understandable, but when you destroy a very implied theme in the story, and end it with a song that represents that theme, its just a lack of logical sense. I was really excited when I heard about kagepro getting an anime. Sure, through the first few episodes, it got scattery, and the posture tilts got me stressed, but those where only small problems compared to the mess of story writting in this. And even in my heart i feel like im giving it a bit too much credit bc of my bias.

There's also another contradiction i don't hear people calling Jin or SHAFT out on that also helps destroy some of the other themes of the story. Before the anime came out jin outright said Shintaro Inherited Ayano's eye power. in the PV it heavily implies her eye power passed onto shintaro... Yet in the anime he has a bullshit new power from a random new snake. It's obvious Jin was retconning at this point to give the story a happier ending... Completely missing the point of the whole moral of the story. Ayano giving Shitnaro her scarf was supposed to be a kind of "passing the torch" moment. She could no longer be the hero that the Gang needed. The anime tossed all of that character development out of t he window. Instead of getting over all of his problems, and becoming a stronger person... Shintaro stayed a weak person who was so fixated on ayano he killed himself to see her again. The anime's kind of offensively bad, I refused to think of this as the final timeline.

And shintaro, in the novels and manga, is portrayed as somebody who was, in fact, very very smart. I'm not going by the song series here, I'm going by every other work in the project that was written by Jin.

***** I sure hope that this wasn't Jin's true intentions... Because Kagepro aside, this was some of the worst writing I've seen in an anime to date. And trust me i've seen a lot of shit. (Not just crappy anime, but movies/TV shows and what not) the characters were surpufulous in this rendition, the story didn't have the same balance of modern day stuff and past stuff that the Novels did. there was only really a plot starting from episode nine. It made so many writing flubs it was kind of hilarious. I'm seriously hoping this anime WAS just an AU, and not in line with the rest of the project, because dear god. I'm not even kidding when i say it's probably in my top ten list of "Worst constructed anime I've seen" maybe even in my top five or three.

Just wanted to help you clear up some possible misunderstandings. First of all the reason Ayano was able to escape the Haze with Shintaro is because she already had an eyepower, just like Shintaro. Jin showed in ep 8 that in order to escape the Haze one needed a snake, which they both did. Jin was preparing for Ayano to comeback for a long time. Now, I agree that the way Kuroha was defeated was defeated was anti-climatic, but it made sense. Haruka's conscience took control of his body and gave Ayano and Shintaro enough time to combine their powers to send Marry the memories of past timelines. The Hiyori comeback was rush and unexpected but at least Jin tried to explained it. Now, Summertime Record is a song with a very ambiguous music video and lyrics. Therefore there are many different ways it can be interpreted, and I believe Jin did this in purpose so that the fans could choose by themselves how the series ended. For you it was a bittersweet ending. Everyone forgets the events and Ayano and Hiyori stay dead. The Dan separates and move on with their lives individually promising to meet each other again in the future. Now I don't know which version you heard, the original or piano/orchestra. The piano/orchestra one sounds way more angsty and sad than the original, so I understand why people believe the bittersweet end is the true end. I listened to the original version and after reading the lyrics and watching the MV, I came to the conclusion that it ended in a happy ending. After much struggle and tragedy all of the Dan survives. They'll never forget what happened, but they won't live on the past and will move on together as friends. I debated whether Ayano and Hiyori survived and joined the rest of the Dan, but after watching the anime I think the answer was pretty clear. Anyways, in my opinion what killed the anime was that it was too ambitious. It tried to tell too big a story in little time. The series needed at least 2 seasons to completely tell the story.

I love the similarities between Shintarou and Mary at the end. Just as Shintarou rejected his reality and became a recluse, Mary rejects hers and responds to it by using her powers. Mary's smile at 2:30 breaks my heart, it's as if she's saying "It's okay, we can just go back", which is exactly what Shintarou was doing. Shutting himself in his room and living in his head with only thoughts of Ayano and the past, Mary's plan is a literal version of that. Unwilling to accept his reality, he shuts himself in his room, unwilling to accept her reality, she resets time.

When I was watching the anime 1 episode a week, I didn't even understand half of the things happening at that point of the episode. Then after they revealed his eye power it made more sense. But looking at comments now made me rethink and this is what I think. *THIS COULD CONTAIN SPOILERS SO BEWARE(just in case)* This is a different timeline from the manga and the light novel, so what happened there didn't happen in this world. Though through his eye powers, Shintaro 'remembers' what happened in these other timelines. The clips you see in the video are from other kagerou project MV's and some pages of the manga. As to how his eye power awakens, there are some interesting theories, but I don't really know how it all works so I'm not going to comment on that. For the rest of the anime, I think it's kind of regretable that it's too short to really let you learn more about the characters, because the characters are just amazing (I like Seto the most :P). I heard they had too small a budget to make it a long anime and really I think they made this an anime to remember. Can't wait for the rest of the manga and the translation of the novel. SPOILERS (FIRST LIGHT NOVEL) okay so I might be wrong on who's point of view this is.... but in the first part of the light novel, Shintaro said something like "I liked how you act violent when you're embarrassed. I liked everything about you. And you." So he's probably talking about Ayano. And if I remember correctly, Shintaro saw Ayano (or vise versa) and said something bout wanting to confess to them. So yeah they both have feeling for each other but they never knew. Just like Takane and Haruka. :') edit: I just realized this comment is 2 years old and I said this late...I know..

Spoiler for the anime, BEWARE: I don't know if anyone addressed this, but what if those manga clips and scenes of Marry are alternate worlds, like she (or the snake) said that Marry kept destroying? She said she didn't wanna lose her friends "again" in the last episode, and these memories are possibly from those alternate timelines. Some say the green and white dude ( I forgot his name) was supposed to be dead, yet there's a scene in the video where he's dead. I didn't read the manga, but that's my speculation on the interpretation.

So this may have been said already, but my theory is that Shintaro's eye power has something to do with seeing into alternate times. I believe that the anime is in a different universe than Route 1 and XX, and the reason Shintaro gets this power is so he could be able to stop the other main characters from dying.

So it took me a few months to realize this but... This ending is what connects EVERYTHING together. Look at this. Then re watch the first episode. The scenes that show Momo and the rest are EXACTLY THE SAME! So that conversation with Ayano probably happened in the Kagerou. o_O

If this makes no sense let an expert on this explain, first Shintaro looks at the photo now realizing that Kido, Kano, Seto were all (he thinks) brothers and sisters to Ayano and now seeing her in the photo reminds him of the past of when he made the finally block between him and Ayano and after that moment it shows Shintaro doesn't love Ayano and she goes of later to kill her self because even knows that Shintaro needs a different girl to love him she still thinks she can count on him and then we see a flash from everything that has been showed in the show back down to his birth as an embryo. Then we cut to well a collection of scenes from the songs and the manga which have nothing to with this it was just so that Jin isn't putting the real song Lost time memory scene to scene in the show I guess and in one of the scene we see Outer Science which makes sense for the final scene because then we see Ayano who is dead and she can only be seen when she is dead and also it means Shintaro still loves her, they didn't die in a couple so when Ayano killed her self she got an eye power sense she didn't die with her love, she is trapped somewhere and when Shintaro dies in the song Lost time memory or when they show Outer Science in the Anime (not sure which) it means now they are both dead and now only one of them goes back, now for the route the song explains Ayano gives up her life force to Shintaro and by letting one of them live Shintaro possess her eye power which is favoring eyes (look it up) and he goes to real life now accepting he is dead. Now for what the Anime explains he sees Ayano he gets her scarf and she dies forever and Shintaro escapes but when Marry comes to help him we see he doesn't have red eyes so he didn't get the eye power and Marry does what she does In Outer Science by looking like she reversed time and reset the clock for Shintaro but until another episode comes out it is unclear for now, so I hope this helped sorry it is so lengthy.

based of my analysis after seeing the manga,i havent read the novel but assuming it have bad end ill say the timeline would be: manga/novel>song>anime,in the manga,ayano is alive so i can pretty much say this is not the last route and shintaro doesnt have his power yet,then goes to the route when ayano dies,this route take at least 3 times,the first one when ene fails to make him go outside,he kills ene,commit suicide,and reset,going in to the route 1,he met and befriend mekakushi dan,and then get shotted by snake of clear eyes,however,this shintaro has accepted ayano death,we can see ayano eyes turn red which means she is inside the heat haze,then they say their farewell,at the end of the song,there are two things,first,shintaro route 1 eyes turns red,and second,route xx shintaro just wake up,so based on this my assumption is before route 1 shintaro got reset,he got his power from marry,and the route xx shintaro that just wake up is probably anime shintaro before the start of the anime,man anime ending sure great and sad coz its ended kagepro storyline but at least its ended coz i prefer something ended instead of being hanged

Would it have killed Shaft to animate some eyes on his parents, seriously? It's freakin' creepy... I still have no idea why Ayano gave Shintaro her scarf if they don't have the same snake, but hey, what can you do... So now, I'm going under the assumption that Route 01 isn't the 'Good Route', but the very first Route before all the time loops. Here, I think Shintaro getting shot by Kuroha is the very thing that saved him from the Outer Science massacre. He entered the Haze while they were all being killed, and they could not because they all already had snakes; Shintaro could because he didn't have a snake. Here he encountered Ayano, and later on Marry, who had entered the Haze to begin to reset the loop. The others are all dead at this point. Marry thought she could use the snakeless Shintaro, and gave him a snake (that was possibly made by Marry rather than Azami). She told him to "never forget this tragedy", and he received the Retaining Snake that meant he could remember this Route, even if time was reset. And thus, this leads to all the other Routes, because the Snake now stays with Shintaro in every Route, as soon as he comes into existence. Honestly though, I think Jin should've just stuck with Shintaro receiving the Favouring Eyes from Ayano, rather than getting his own snake. It makes all kinds of plot holes; - What was the meaning behind Ayano giving Shintaro her scarf which causes him to gain red eyes in LTM? - In the LN, it said that there were 10 snakes. However, this addition now makes it 11. - This now means Ayano can come back, as the Favouring Snake will be her surrogate life. However, that just screams "bollocks" to me, especially since there has been no hint of Ayano returning in any other media. It takes away her meaningful death. - Jin could've easily made "Favouring" to mean "favouring one's memories", and thus remembering other routes. But because of Marry's speech at the end of the anime, I now believe that the ending of MCA is a "What if?" scenario. Also I don't want that ending to be the true ending, because I thought it was rather shite. I wanted the PV for Summertime Record to be the real good ending instead of what we got in MCA...

I think most of the flaws come from the anime literally being a poorly planned peice of shit that disregarded EVERYTHING in the project. As in it didn't care what the hell it contradicted it did what it wanted. Hopefully the novels ending will turn this into some kind of AU rather than the "canon ending"

Summertime Record PV will remain the true ending until a better one comes along, or the PV is adapted into manga/LN format. Please, Jin. Bringing Ayano back and focusing on her rather than SR!Haruka was a bad move.

Edo Nagori Yeah, they were the two that ultimately moved on from their respective love interests, yet in MCA seeing as Hiyori and Ayano came back that went up in smoke, and their way of becoming stronger and accepting their deaths was thrown aside. Even though I strongly oppose Ayano coming back, and like the development Hibiya got in Otsukimi Recital, I don't really mind Hiyori coming back. She was only gone for a few days, and I find it funny that Clearing-san met his ultimate demise at the hands of a bratty little girl. XD

My theory (I haven't read many other ones, so someone else may have come up with this): At the end of the Lost Time Memory PV, we see Shintaro from Route XX lying in his bed after failing to get Ayano's eye power. The clock has gone backwards, so it seems as if he's entered a time loop, similar to Hibiya and Hiyori. In the anime, he has dreams where Ayano speaks to him, but he does not recognize her. Perhaps this is showing Route XX, as she tells him to remember what happened that day, despite him forgetting. Here, he seems to go into some sort of mental breakdown after seeing Ayano in the picture. Maybe seeing her sparked his memory of the days he's spent in the August 15 time loop, and the sudden shock made him go mad, but also allow him to speak directly to Ayano. This is just my theory. Also, I think that Outer Science was mixed in. They're not going to make an Outer Science episode, and Jin said that they'd be following a different timeline, so maybe as Mary was napping, she was becoming the next Medusa. In a way, Tateyama-san seems to be taking Kuroha's role in gathering the snakes together to Mary.

Maybe seeing her sparked his memory of the days he's spent in the August 15 time loop, and the sudden shock made him go mad, but also allow him to speak directly to Ayano." makes sense because this is true, war time veterans get a disorder that when they see something or hear something they go into shock and they think they are back when it happen, same thing must be happening to Shintaro but a little and this time with Marry around it must be causing a break in the loop for a short period of time and he must be able to see her and since he is there Ayano get a chance to say her good byes and maybe since Shintaro broke the loop the snakes in Marry must be pissed as we can see Marry got a pretty pissed face on and she must be doing something to him that's what I think

This entire post is going to spoil the entire manga and songs. You have been warned. While it is a great song cover (arguably the only good thing of MCA) half of that did't happen or was poorly misrepresented. First off, MARY ISN'T IN THE GODDAMN SONG ONCE!!!!!! And the shots of Mary at 1:58 are directly ripped from Outer Science. And it completely messed with the idea of multiple timelines. In the original MV, giant text boxes pop up and say "Route 1" and "Route XX" to illustrate 2 different Shintaro's. As I said, its a great cover, but SHAFT is basically shiting on this. Also don't blame Shinbo for it. Blame Jin. Yeah, that Jin. He and Shidu are writing this adaptation.

Hmm I don't really see how this messes up the idea of timelines... After all, there can be a lot more than one timeline, and only one of them is the one that they want to take (that leads to a happy ending). Furthermore, as previously mentioned, the anime takes a different path from the manga or novel, so it's very possible that Shintaro may have gotten an ability to view multiple timelines, such as those in the manga and novel and XX etc, and that's how he will help the Dan eventually get to the happy ending.

I know that the anime is taking a different route, as did the manga and LNs. I am just saying the adaptation did a shit job of illustrating multiple timelines. And as far as I know, there are 2 events that trigger multiple different timelines. Shintaro's depression at Ayano and Konoha becoming Kuroha and murdering everyone. I know each timeline (other than XX) changes when Kuroha shows up (we don't really know where the new manga Route is going). Shintaro only gets powers in Route 1 ( as far as we know now) because we have never seen what happens after he wakes up at the end of Lost-Time Memory.

Hmm okay firstly to clarify some things: I think it's better to be more open; I think they did a rather decent job with the timelines, they made Shintaro see all the timelines flashing past, and I think that illustrates his ability and the thing about the timelines quite well Plus, there was nothing about Route 1 being the only route that gets the ability, it's quite cool to see this route unfolding in its own way as well. Though I do get the point about how Mary was originally not in the scene (though the lyrics states otherwise), I don't really get how flashing back different scenes from manga and the MV does not illustrate various timelines, and so I don't really see a need for a labeling the different timelines like in the MV?

Wait, Shintaro saw all the timelines? I didn't notice that (thanks Shinbo). The reason I said that Route 1 was the only one where he got powers was because (as far as I know) all the other timelines(other than XX) have ended before Shintaro got powers and then Mary pressed reset. And for the manga and MV clips. Without prior knowledge of the idea, I wouldn't have realized(until the CH 18 part came up) that it was multiple timelines. Just that it was a montage for brevity's sake. And with the MV clips, there was nothing to indicate that it was a different Shintaro, it just looked like he was greiving without the prior knowledge of it. And on a side-note, both Shintaro's were in the Haze with Ayano and only Route 1 Shintaro talked to her. The adaptation only put 1's Shintaro in there.

+tamamakilledaizen SPOILERS There are two timelines, and that means that there are two Shintaros in that AMV. Route XX Shintaro and Route 1 Shintaro. Route XX can't get over Ayano's death, and Route 1 is able to. Route XX is like the "Bad End", the end in which Shintaro won't get over Ayano's death, and in which Kuroha slaughters all of the Mekakushi-dan. Route 1 is the so-called "Good End" in which he gets over Ayano's death, gains his eye power, and defeats Kuroha. So, Ene is telling Route XX Shintaro that she's worried about him, and asks if he will be able to see tomorrow. In a fit of frustration he strangles Ene and she disappears(It's implied that she died.), and realizing what he did in panic, he grabs a pair of scissors. It then shows Route 1 Shintaro watching Kuroha possessing Konoha, and Kuroha is about to shoot himself, hoping to kill Konoha as well. Right when Kuroha is about to kill himself(Konoha), Route 1 Shintaro Jumps in the way and gets shot instead of Kuroha. At the same time, Route XX Shintaro stabs himself in the throat with scissors, dying (or nearly dying) at the same time as Route 1 Shintaro. It then shows Route XX and Route 1 next to each other. Then, we see Route XX Shintaro with Azami, Route XX Shintaro probably having died(or having a near death experience). Then it shows Route XX and Route 1 in a classroom with Ayano. She says that she's sorry she died and asks to bid her farewells. Route XX runs towards her and screams not to leave him, but it's already too late. Route 1 Shintaro calmly walks towards her and smiles, much to Ayano's surprise. She throws her scarf around him, and then disappears. Route 1 Shintarou, having experienced a near death experience and getting over Ayano's death, gains his eye power. I hope that cleared the confusion. It was a lot to explain
