A translation note: In Korean there are levels of speech that are considered appropriate or inappropriate depending on the situation. One of the ways of dividing speech is 표준어 “pyojunoh” and 비속어 “bisokoh”. Pyojunoh is standard speech. Bisokoh is often translated as “slang”. Bisokoh is not standard speech so it can be considered crass, vulgar, or inappropriate to use. At the very least, the use of bisokoh can make the speaker look uneducated and unsophisticated. Because of this it’s considered taboo to use bisokoh on broadcasts. In this case, the word that Yoojung used is often mistaken as a bisokoh word but it is actually pyojunoh and completely acceptable to be said on broadcast. Another point that tends to confuse non-native speakers is the difference between bisokoh and 욕 “yok”. Yok is swear words. Someone’s reaction to the use of bisokoh and yok can be similar, but yok is significiantally worse. In this case, KB was being melodramatic by saying that Yoojung used “bad words”.
