This drives me crazy. I'm starting to study a little Japanese and some words really can drastically change in meaning if you stretch the vowel or not. It's most likely second nature if you're a native speaker but comes across really subtle if you're an English speaker like me.
@richter19343 жыл бұрын
But when you fully master the language you can finally understand and make Japanese jokes.
@texivani3 жыл бұрын
English sort of has this feature too when you really think about it. "Heeeey buddy!" has a wildly different meaning from "Hey. *Buddy*." Its 12am and I'm overworked so I can't think of better examples right now but Ive thought about this before. English has very different meanings for words and implications about their intent depending on how you say them. Just as you say though, it's second nature, so second nature that you probably don't even think about how you already do it. You just learn by context over time, so having to learn it mechanically makes it seem like a totally new concept.
@canaldecasta3 жыл бұрын
That can lead to a lot of misunderstandings doesnt It?

@@texivani Its past midnight where I'm at too, but I totally agree with what your saying. Learning a new language from the ground up has really made me think about how much a nightmare English must be to a beginner. I realized I would go nuts learning that the words to, too and two are all pronounced the same but have different meanings. Or the spellings of rough, cough, and though all have "ough" and are all pronounced different. I would go insane learning this stuff if I wasnt a native.

I've been studying Japanese for a little over 2 years, so something as basic as her name isn't difficult. On the other hand, if I don't already know how a word is spelt, I could confuse vowels. Just a few hours ago I thought 仕返し was spelt しかいし, because who said it didn't make it clear it was an え and not an い. It will happen from time to time with お vs おう as well. Once you know how to spell the word you're good though xD
