It was so sweet, and definitely showed how comfortable they are with each other. I love how affectionate they are to each other, they don't need lots of kisses and pda to show their love. Xu Kai is really great at acting with his eyes and expression, like when Zijin was painting Zhanji (his official Emperor portrait). The way he looked at her was so filled with love, literal hearts were pouring out.

When she was coaxing him...it reminded me of the story he told Empress Hu about his grandmother...how she was the only one that could coax his grandfather...neither of his other concubines would even dare to try. This says a lot about their relationship... even though she isn't his Empress...she's the only one that can get through to him. The Empress has tried and failed...but Zijin always gets through to him.

The bird Zijin made friend with while grounded is Officer You’s bird. The flute song playing when Zijin is lonely is by Officer You. Wonder why the uncut version isn’t uploaded on KZbin and Netflix.

@@zonrey2781 Well it was always speculated that some of the painting that Zijin received was from Yifan. Zijin also had the same bird....I believe we saw it in episode 6 or 7 during the time Zijin intentionally threw the competition so that Ziping could win. His attendants informed him that she lost...one of them was feeding his bird. They were probably under a time crunch so they had to cut a lot of scenes to keep it in the 40 episodes time frame. It would be nice to see all the deleted scenes...maybe they will post them

@@shontelagrone8713 I hope so. During the Ming Dynasty when an empress abdicated, where did she go? Episode 40, Zijin said how Zhanji can cut off Hu’s wings to suffer. Then he said, she has to go somewhere, it’s ancestral system. Then he made an edict for Hu to transfer to a palace.

Because she's not the type to. She's there because she loves Zhanji, not to be in a position of power. But now she's stepped up because she knows what Empress Dowager expects/wanted from her. I do love her idea of bringing back the old practice of having the harem oversee different departments. It puts everyone to use so there's less time to spend sitting around and stirring up drama.

This is what Empress Hu should've been doing...but instead she decided to go along with Lady Wu's plan to slander Zijin....she's allowing her jealousy to cloud her better judgement. Zijin went out of her way to help her...and she stabbed her in the back yet again. She's too busy trying to hold on to her power that she doesn't see what's right in front of her eyes. It's a good thing that Zhanji has Zijin by his side...because Empress Hu is useless. I love the way Empress Dowager chose to handle the situation...she sat back and enjoyed the show....when Zijin was laying out her plan...you can tell that she was impressed...she knew that she made the right decision. She even tried to get her to badmouth them but Zijin took the high road. She made them look petty as hell.

@@shontelagrone8713 The progression of Zijin and Empress Dowager's relationship is so sweet, once the issue was resolved, they formed an amazing team. Even the burning of the palace part was beautiful, especially since Zijin didn't get punished. Zijin was able to connect with both Zhanji and his mother in a way that no one else could.

Empress Dowager made the right choice when she fixed her relationship with Zijin...and told her that she wanted her to be by his side...that said a whole lot about her feelings for Empress Hu's role in Zhanji's life. I love their relationship.

I think if she insisted on staying with the Emperor, she would just anger him. She lost her chance to get close already in the first episodes. While she hesitated, waited and cherished her traumas, the emperor just found someone else to offer his heart. Sad, especially it is sad for a woman that has no other man to choose (kinda he is your whole life now, deal with it) but that's how people deal with their issues: if they found a closed door, they will search for an open one, not attempting to break it down with his head.

There was so much time wasted by them just sitting around, waiting to be called upon by the Emperor. With them overseeing different areas of the palace, not only would they lessen the workload for the Empress (who was always sick), they would also be able to ensure that there was less corruption by the eunuchs (who were in charge of everything). It was such a brilliant idea.

@@becka5378 I agree. It was a brilliant idea. If the Empress did more than just sulk and feel sorry for herself...maybe she could manage the harem properly. Empress Dowager/Zijin even discussed the corruption involving the eunuchs but somehow her self pity seems to take priority...instead of helping with the growing problems within the palace...she focusing on herself. She's not fit to be the Empress.

@@shontelagrone8713 she was always 'sick' too, which seemed so fake honestly. She didn't care about anything until Zhanji became interested in Zijin. Empress Hu was extremely weak, especially in her inability to see past her own self-pity. I'm kind of disappointed because she could have been written so much better, and while she does have some redemption at the end (when she finally puts forward her dream of pursuing medicine again), it was kind of too late imo. Zijin was only a noble Consort, but she was managing the entire harem literally from day one. Her knowledge and ideas were so good, especially bringing back the old practice of having the harem ladies run different areas in the palace, because sitting and doing nothing in the hopes that the Emperor remembers you was just not it. I mean she knew that Zhanji was only paying attention to her, so of course she wants to occupy the ladies so they're too busy to complain and scheme.

@@becka5378 there wer times when she was faking it...but the majority of the time she was emotionally sick...her self pity state of mind caused a lot of problems especially when she acts on her emotions. You're right...she didn't really care about Zhanji until he moved on. He gave her plenty of chances but she rejected him at every turn. If she hadn't gone after Zijin....Zhanji might've been cordial to her. The final nail in her coffin is when she tried to frame Zijin for poisoning her....all bets were off at that point. I wish they would've written her a little differently. I thought that was going to change when she finally stood up to her family...but that didn't last long at all. Zijin did her thing...her mothers would've been proud of her. She handled things like a BOSS. Empress Hu could've learned a thing or two from her but she was too busy badmouthing her to realize what an asset she could've been to her. Her ideas were refreshing...instead of listing all the problems in the harem...she gave solutions not only for the harem but solutions for the entire palace. She was brilliant....Empress Dowager was impressed.

@@shontelagrone8713 I would have loved to see Empress Hu stand up to her family and then become independent. She would have been an amazing character if she didn't allow other people to influence her actions. Her family did so by trying to replace her, and by having her older sister speak evil into her ear. The Empress Dowager did so by reminding her that she didn't have a son, which really neant she had no power, which then pushed her to try and have a relationship with Zhanji. If she had just focused on what she wanted, and not in a self-pity way, then she could have been an amazing and strong female character. But she was so easily and heavily influenced by those around her, she created her own problems. Yes, Zhanji would have been cordial with her because even at the very beginning of Zhanji falling for Zijin, he emphasized that he couldn't despose of Hu because she had done nothing wrong. Sure it would have been more of a Gaozhi/NC Guo/Empress Dowager situation, but Zhanji was much better and respectful than his father. But Hu messed that up when she believed that Zijin wanted to replace her, when in reality Zijin just wanted a peaceful life (first as a female official, and then as Zhanji's wife/concubine). If Hu had taken a moment to actually speak with Zijin, she would have realized that. So this is where my lack of sympathy for Empress Hu is based. Everything could have been avoided and she could have had a great relationship with both Zhanji and Zijin, built on mutual respect. I don't think Zhanji would have loved Hu, but he would have respected her as he first intended.

Yes, she knew that Empress Hu was incapable of being the woman that her son needed by his side. She is too weak to handle the affairs of the nation...and she has a hard time handling him. She said that her mother was right about Zijin... and now she knows just how right her mother was...I think she sees a little bit of herself in Zijin.

What a lot of people don’t understand about suicide, is that a majority of those who commit it don’t actually want to die. But if you’re life is so miserable, with no recourse to improve the situation, well being dead becomes a lot more appealing. In the case of the empress, she had no say in her marriage, in its entirety. You can’t make someone like you, and quite frankly the palace life is just an endless pit of vipers. She’s constantly beholden to a family that belittled and manipulated her, and to top off that shit cake, she is constantly judged by those around her, and found wanting for things beyond her control.

Yes, I love Eunuch Chen Wu...He knows how much Zhanji loves her. He also knows that she's the only one that can coax him...even when he told her to leave because he didn't want to seee her...she stayed put..and eventually she calmed him down enough that he let down his guards...and told her how he was feeling. There was no pretense...just honest emotions. I love them. The way she coaxed him reminded me of the story he told Empress Hu about his grandmother. She was the only one that dared to coax his grandfather....none of his other concubines would try because they didn't want to feel his wrath. Zijin is the woman that will stand by his side for the rest of his life. He finally has what he was looking for...true love. Empress Hu and Lady Wu have some nerves...especially Empress Hu...Zijin went out of her way to help her despite the fact that she tried to frame her for poisoning her. It's a good thing that Zijin doesn't hold a grudge...because she would be in trouble. I love the way Empress Dowager chose to handle things...she gave them a front row seat as they listened to Zijin outline her plans. She didn't degrade any of the women in his harem. She talked highly of them... which made them look petty as hell. Empress Dowager is absolutely right...if she badmouth them to Zhanji...they wouldn't have anything.. especially Empress Hu. I lost the last bit of respect I had for Empress Hu when she chose to badmouth Zijin...after she helped her.

Zijin knows his temperment and she is literally the only one of his wives that is actually taking care of him. They all want his favor but they aren't putting in the work. I agree with Ziping. She does so much and they still talk bad about her. Maybe if you cared about his clothing, his diet and his health you would be favored as well.

Yuehua was going to tell him she liked him but he doesn't like her so he stopped her. I always thought she liked him. She thinks they both have evil deeds in common so why not be a couple but though he has evil plots, the one he admires is Zijin. She does good rather than evil. Often times a good woman will be crazy about a rogue and often a rogue will be crazy about a good woman. It just happens that sometimes opposites attract. No one wins when this happens whether the good one is male or female and whether the bad one is male or female. Someone will get the fuzzy end of the lollipop. At least Zijin and Zanji are both good people who care about others. Zijin tops the list of good people in this drama.

If Empress Hu would've been doing her duty instead of trying to set up Zijin...she wouldn't be the prime suspect to Zijin's poisoning. Zhanji will figure out the truth especially since it involves Zijin. He's going to do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

It wasn't the actual poison. Ziping knew that Yuehua was going to try, so she switched the meal so it just knocked Zijin unconscious. It was the perfect opportunity to frame the Empress. BTW, the Emperor was in on it, he's forcing the conspirators to act so he can catch them.

I don't know if she's actually sick though, because in the first or second episode, she was supposed to meet Zhanji after he returned, but she told the servant to tell the mother-in-law that she was too sick to move (when in reality she wasnt). I think she's definitely weak, but I also think she uses being sick as a way to avoid doing what she's supposed to. It's either that or she's still secretly poisoning herself, which we know she does.

After she poisoned herself the last time Zhanji told her that she was sick...he wasn't talking about physically...he was talking about emotionally...and he was right. She was so desperate to get rid of Zijin that she was willing to harm herself.
